  1. I have an odd question regarding heart rate creep… During a 50k run a few weeks ago, I found that my heart rate was escalating drastically towards the second half and especially the end even though fitness was good. I felt fine though. Then I consulted Google who suggested it could be a higher core temperature that causes it. And yes, the run was initially along the coastline starting early hours and once we turned more inland and the sun got higher my HR went up gradually until it was concerning high for the effort involved. So – Saturday at OMTOM I made a point of using water sachets to wet my head and torso to keep cooler. Although there was still heart rate creep it wasn’t nearly as bad. Does this make sense and is it in fact, true or am I reading something in my stats that should be attributed to coincidence or something else?
  2. Ooph - that was far. My furthest ever. My wind was out over Constantia Neck and as Stretch said that camber on the other side nearly had me thinking my ankles won't make it. Once the road leveled out my eating strategy paid of and I was surprised how well it went from there. Aimed for a 5:30 and got a 5:21 ish. Not sure as my watch managed to pause itself after a sheepish cateye/tar meeting. Only noticed after 200-300m and resumed so time and distance a bit off for me. Another thing that struck me was how nice it is for random strangers supporting on the side to be able to read your name on your number and call you by name to cheer you on. I swear every time that happened the next 20 steps are easier! The support was incredible today! Then there was a guy on the road that was running his 30th ultra today. Wow. Respect! I think the organisers did a brilliant job. Maybe more fluids at the end for each finisher, otherwise everything I encountered was top notch. Well done to all that was there today whether supporting or running!
  3. Quickly picked up my number and popped by Andrew at the expo yesterday afternoon to introduce myself and say hello. Hope your feet will last the week Andrew - I didn't see chairs around you so hopefully you guys get to take a break and drink a coffee somewhere else to get off the feet every now and then. I must say this holding back and "rest" thing this week makes me lazy. Did a short light run this morning, but it was even harder to drag myself out the door since it isn't supposed to be a "real" run. That together with a little bite in the air after the rain... And as always it is so nice once you are actually out there.
  4. Thanks - I will rather do the two lighter runs as you suggested. I have been feeling the high mileage since the beginning of March getting the better of me. Most weeks has been 80-90k and to me that is a lot. And as Hacc pointed out being cautious also has other benefits.
  5. Quote from Hacc ...and it will make you doubt yourself and that you will be able to run Comrades at any pace... ...boost your self-confidence and training for Comrades. Don't set yourself up for failure... Thanks - this does make a lot of sense. I probably need that more than the sessions I will miss.
  6. Quick question for the Comrades experts. Reading how everyone doesn't intend on running this week makes me question myself. Seeing my goal is not OMTOM, but Comrades, I planned to still do my regular sessions until Wednesday and then a very light warmup on Friday. This on the back of fairly generous LSD runs on the weekend behind me. I do not care too much for a stellar time at Oceans, but just want to run the required pace for Comrades. Am I making a rookie mistake by being too aggressive?
  7. Happy belated Stretch! @Stefmeister - I also had a much higher heart rate when I started running if compared to cycling. It came down to "normal" levels after a long while. And I also tended to run too fast and far for a beginner as my cycling fitness level was rather good. Then got injured when the kays started building up... Swissvan's advice was spot on in my case.
  8. I also run alone and on the same routes most of the time. For me mixing up the time of day helps a lot with variety. Even just a late afternoon run vs evening run extending into darker hours is completely different. And our area is still safe even after dark so that is one of my favorites.
  9. The sleep problem my wife and I have experienced... Can't really recall the rest, but can say I felt off/strange.
  10. I'm rather stoked. I managed a brand spanking new PB by something like 15 mins. Squeezed a new seeding for Comrades, which I didn't plan! But building up fitness is going rather well. I'm still fairly new to running so there were gains to be made. Conditions were OK(ish). Yes, the wind was bad and general direction from the front, but there were quiet parts and it also helped a little from behind in a couple of sections. Other than the eensy weensy South Easter it was a good day out with a very nice vibe.
  11. G'Morning - Anyone from CPT that know how extensively the mountains has burned around the Redhill course for tomorrow? That is an unbelievably beautiful route, but I know some sections has burned in the last week or so. Just trying to establish how much of the distance we will have to endure soot and how much will have the usual fabulous scenery...
  12. I sometimes wear a pair of D'Arcs (please don't judge me on that ) and found if I adjust them ever so slightly away from my face it makes a world of difference. Might not always be possible with the various combinations of glasses/faces, but something you can try. I however don't like using them as once I get sweaty and wet it is a matter of time before the lenses are practically worthless to see through. Only use them on routes straight into the sun on the horizon.
  13. I'll bite as well (same side). I've been following the thread since day one, but not really the vocal type... The thing that stands out to me is the 20. That body could be so conditioned that his case would fall towards the extremities of normal. Not to mention genes and ability. And yes, the quality argument is obviously a strong one, but I do think there is a balancing point that would differ for each runner. As a noob I'll walk a couple of times between DBN & PMB on Lindsey's guidance and quite a couple of kays before pulling a stunt like that.
  14. I treat it the same as an expensive phone and got a screen protector. E-bay = something like R30-R50. For a bunch of them... My first one I installed is still 100% after months of use.
  15. Don't let a wheelchair hold you back! RESPECT!
  16. I have the buzzrack antelope and it does the job. Quality after just less than a year has not been a problem. Only issue I have is that it twists on the tow ball at highway speeds. The recommended maximum speeds will therefore be less than when the rack fixes to the towbar arm. My 2 bike platform fixes to a plate and that is much more stable. Platform in general is much better - if you can.
  17. Stumbled upon this scene this morning. The valley came alive with the sun breaking through the swift moving clouds.(Taken about 3km in on the Kogelberg MTB trail. Samsung S5 - resized)
  18. Dunno, but is this one any faster than a 26"?
  19. You have a lot of amazing photo's on here Wyatt. I really admire how you create something special out of the ordinary!
  20. This photo made my day and I spent quite a few minutes admiring, contemplating and dreaming about this scene. WOW!
  21. Sorry - I have no idea as I bought mine secondhand.
  22. They start dirt cheap and goes up to ridiculous. The cheap ones will still serve the purpose, but I would recommend one that does not have the seat and handlebar posts at a square angle (flat side front/back/sides). When these are angled at 45° it usually secures with a more stable mechanism. As mentioned in a previous post the freewheeling is nice. Even crucial with small children in the house. They will end up trying to conquer the bike, but when the foot comes off the pedal the flywheel momentum comes back to bite them badly. Pedals and seat you can sort out if required. You can save substantially by buying second hand. Some people buy them with all the best intentions. These things ends up being a white elephant so easily. Those are usually the ones that is really "hardly used". Something else to keep in mind - a spinning bike does take up a lot of space. Make sure you can live with that - else go for a normal trainer that fits under the bed.
  23. Not at all, but bear in mind that after I stop I usually have a snack and then hit the shower. By the time I go to bed everything is wound down. If anything - I sleep better.
  24. Agreed - setup could be problematic. I could never get 100% comfortable on my previous "cheap" spin bike. The current one is much better as it has better ranges.
