  1. Maybe because you can't restrict the lateral of the movement of the block when cutting dado's, and your fingers will be too close to the blade. Speaking of Youtube Channels, which channels are you subscribed to? I only have Woodwhisperer and Woodworking for Mortals.
  2. The terrible result of old age. My grand father was a excellent carpenter, and he is still making cool furniture. But he also forgot to close a running tap which flooded his entire workshop. We only realised this after a few weeks, and by then EVERYTHING was rusted, including his entire Millers Falls planes set.
  3. Vegetarian sausage and patties for a friend. My steak next to it ended up smelling like vegetable soup.
  4. Although it is far off a proper table saw, I bought a second hand Triton Workbench fitted with a Makita 5903 saw (for a ridiculous price). I can do all types of cuts, but it does require a bit of effort because the fence is not installed on a slider system, can't fit a dado and the work surface is only about 700 x 600 mm. This solution would cost you about R 15 000. But if you intend to do some semi-commercial work, I suggest you take the plunge and buy the Jet.
  5. Did anyone here visit NAADA at Mall of Africa this weekend? Some really crazy carpentry items there! I saw a simliar piano like the one Jimmycool posted above selling for R 400k.
  6. Do you guys actually use sawdust for anything beneficial?
  7. Our machine shop uses TESA measuring equipment. Their local agent is Micron but I am not sure whether they keep stock of squares. They are cheaper than Mitutoyo. Do you need that accuracy for woodworking?

  9. Hi Stretched, if i may ask, which company do you work for? Do you also sell exotics?
  10. Maybe not up the general carpenter's alley, but black wood and ebony is an awesome material to use in violins, guitars or harps due to their hardness. The wood is almost just as tough as ivory and can be used for tuning pegs or bridges on instruments. I built an Aeolian harp a few years ago and used black wood for most of the smaller components. To the trained ear (not mine) it gives instruments a specific sound.
  11. Thank you everyone for your valuable input!!
  12. Hi Guys Would you please share where you purchase your wood working power tools (in JHB preferably if they do not ship)? I would like to replace a router (and bits), orbital sander and jigsaw. I am a bit out of touch with the cost of things. Thanks!
  13. Pros: It is a great and tough event and brilliantly organized. Their is really nothing to fault with the route or the organizing of it. It is a lot more accessible and cheaper than Transbaviaans with just as pretty views when the sun rises the Saturday morning. If you have completed the Transbaviaans and 36One, this ride should be one your calendar. Cons: It is over Easter weekend and unfortunately is a bit of a family sacrifice. I would not recommend your wife or GF to be your support crew. There is really little mobile coverage along the route.
  14. I was really impressed by this event, I foresee that more riders will opt for this race instead of Transbaviaans. Not only Gauteng riders! Initially I was skeptical of the support vehicle setup and being self sufficient, as I would've enjoyed a checkpoint container setup that is transported by the organizers. But that would've reduced the 'lively' feel at each checkpoint. I used my Extreme Lights Core light mostly on dim, and only on bright during the sketchy downhills, and my battery lasted the entire night! Osmand+ Android App also worked perfectly for navigation, as it creates it's own voice commands to guide you through the route. It is great for the later stages of the race when you are tired and even orientation on a GPS screen becomes tricky. I will recommend this race/ride to anyone who asks about it!
  15. But you don't have Facebook ? It was not stated in the website's rules..
  16. Where did you see that Ben?
  17. It looks like his handlebars caught the jacket first, and that steered his wheels into the barrier feet.
  18. RIP Tumbles
  19. I am also in the same sinking boat as the two above gentlemen. Looking to share a support driver for the race and I will obviously contribute to fuel costs. I am aiming for a 15h - 16h ride. My fault for not reading the rules thoroughly but I can't expect my wife to drive through the night.
  20. Just want to start the first post of a thread on a bit more formal and useful tone, instead of the "who doing it" or "ridez not syncing" standard Hub talk. Anyway, the first question: Does the riding buddy also need to meet the goals?
  21. Similar to the USN Cape Epic Challenge, Virgin Active are also headline sponsors and got on baord to host a competion called the Virgin Active Epic Battle. It uses Strava as a platfrom where a rider (Virgin Active member) completes challenges to stand a chance to win a Absa Cape Epic 2018 entry. The website: Virgin Active The rules: Legal Pages Terms & Conditions The Challenges: Go for Speed - Do 1 ride for at least 1 hour with an average speed of 23 km/h Go for One Hundred (once-off distance) - Do a 100km ride Go for Total Elevation (once-off elevation) - Do at least 1 Ride with an elevation of 1000m … Go for Total Distance (Weekly total distance) - Do at least 300 km for the week … Go for Altitude (Weekly total elevation) - Total elevation for the week of at least 3500m Go There - Become a VA Member and sign up for My VAEach challange has a week time limit. A very nice initiative!
  22. Haha, for some reason I didn't expect Vetseun to be a Iggy person!
  23. There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer then, because the gate guards would allow me in just for the guards on patrol to chase me away. Maybe depends on the luck of the draw. On my next visit I will try to speak to some higher authoritive person and report back. Hopefully they are open for negotiations.
  24. I think he is actually their South African Marketing Manager. He has 5 Spez bikes.
  25. Hey Cheese One of the most useful apps for gravel riding is OSMAND. The iPhone and Android premium versions cost R5.00 - R20.00. The App can be used to access a gpx file from a phone. You are able to save this file, and follow it with only your GPS active. You are able to view this route offline, as Osmand allows downloadable offline maps. However, it displays only the route, and yourself as a marker. You won't get any warnings or notifications when diverting off-route that 'wakes up your locked phone', but will be more than sufficient for this race.
