  1. Wow prices re getting quite expensive for these races!
  2. He got it from A place in boksburg, and i see you in Cape town, so it wouldnt help you much. But what ottocs says is hundred percent, stick to budget, cause its very easy for a salesman to sell you something more expensive that you dont need at this moment. I always shop around for the best prices with everything, so i know you can get a good bike for that price. Deals also dependant on your negotiating skills ! Pants and tops etc again, shop around, some LBS shops have sales on the previous years kit, so you could score shorts for like R250..
  3. Well R6k can get get you something decent, we will not get into the 26vs29 debate, but to give an answer you can get a very decent bike with discs, decent components for around that mark. Shop around, you will get a better deal on the 2012 models, and in my opinion that would be the way to if you starting out, BUT, i have seen that the prices the 2013 models are going for are also great, again just see what the best deal you can get. I have a family memeber who has just started and they go a great deal on a Scott 26er with decent components, for around the 6k mark. As for buying new or second hand, i would go for the brand new, you get a warranty with the bike and you are the first person riding it, so if there is issues you can always take it back to your local LBS> Not sure if that helped you in anyway..
  4. ah the kempton park area there by serengeti is usually where i go ride. Apparently there was also an incident on the road that runs parallel to the railway tracks not to long ago, so im a bit hesitant to go there again, which is a pity cause i had an awesome 30km loop set out there which was awesome! Been thinking of attaching pepper spray to the bike, but hey, i dont exactly want to get stabbed so those pieces of C@#p must rather take the bike and leave me alone. Not always the case these days as it seems you these scoundrels will stab for R10.
  5. http://www.bicycling.co.za/training-nutrition/5-commuting-excuses-solved/6/ This is proper!
  6. I am so sh*t scared of snakes that I think I could possibly break world records for running away crying like a little girl.... the picture of that snake stuck in the rear wheel is probably my biggest fear! I have no idea what i would do.... If anyone if riding in the pta/east rand area and finds a Scott Spark with a snake stuck in the wheel lying the middle of nowhere, its mine.. youll probably find me up a tree or running at light speed very far away.
  7. he is like the mad scientist of benoni!! taking over the world on his two wheeled machine one town at a time.....
  8. depends which part of Jozi you coming to... Dunkeld cycles in Rosebank, Cajees and Finishline cycels for the East rand..
  9. Did the 55km: 2:41, was a good day out.... What happened to Max Knox?
  10. what about the timeRXS first pedal? see the price is in budget..
  11. i have Shimano on my mountain bike, they great... I need pedals for my road bike now..
  12. Are those SPD pedals?
  13. Hi there fellow Hubbers Just need some advice on a pair of pedals I want to buy. Ive been looking at the Look range, specifically the EASY, PLUS and the Classic. Now im open to other brands, just saw these first. Now the cheapest being the Easy and the more expensive being the Classic(R700), I dont want to spend more than that on a pedal. The Easy doesnt have spring adjustment, is this really necessary/important? I have never adjust the pedals on the other bike. Advice on what to get would be appreciated. Thanks Marx
  14. Practice Practice Practice... Recently been hitting Groenkloof nature reserve for some training sessions, and i must say it pays off. @Vinnydabutcher - Completely agree with strong core! Helps alot with stability! My advice for the hills, look up - mark a track and JUST DO IT!
  15. Well looks like im going to go buy one of these this weekend, just what i need. squashing everything together doesnt work so well. As for the topic - ive recently started commuting to work and i must say it has been great. It is great to share different views and experiences. My first day was nerve racking though, taped the garmin gps to my handlebars and there i went. First three days the route was not the same but after that you start to know the areas you go through and where to be careful. I must say earlier their was a comment that pedestrians in the pecking order of the roads and they on the bottom of the list, but I must say, some of them are just oblivious to when you shout coming by or whatever, the pedestrians have been one the biggest dangers to me.. not the guy in the taxi.. One thing that I have have mastered though is to fold a collared shirt in such a way that when I unpack it, it does not look like it just came from the ironing basket, first day commute - get to work with a crinkle shirt - Not on! Next on the list is to try get another wheel set, as mentioned before, riding with MTB tyres on the road can become costly. Tubless conties or which ever brand arent cheap these days. Suppose the money I save from fuel can fund my new wheelset.
  16. haha, I did my first 3 94.7's on my 1980's somewhere around there Raleigh Racer that was passsed down to me, it still has downtube shifters, weighs like a ton, but needless to say, did a good race, and had a brilliant time! I just sent my MTB in for a full service... Im nervous! Dont want one of these phone call.. Been wanting to do a build for a while now.. and i must say it sometimes lands up costing a little bit, but i suppose it takes times to find those bargains and patience... still keen on it tho, also been doing alot of reading and knowing what is wrong with your bike when something goes wrong helps alot, and if you know how to fix it yourself, bonus!
  17. Sabie at the end of the year... not sure on exactly what is is called... but it starts on the 14th of Dec.
  18. Ive seen this so many times, pure power! Did a cycle race at stonehaven recently, and there was s fellow cyclist that was on a mountain bike that was probably ten years old and didnt even have a name, just had slicks, he rode with takkies aswell.. he still kept with the pack for about 90 percent of the race, during the one flat stretch he still got a phone call and was talking for a few min.. This was amazing!
  19. yes you *** and betaal for everything... decided this CRC is not a good idea to be honest.. you wait forever and dont save that much..
  20. yes anything above the 20k mark and I start breaking into a cold sweat... I think there should be events were the bike you ride cant be more than R2000, and this will revive the game special bikes! That will be a race....
  21. Great advice so far... just to add, some of the 94.7's ive ridden have been in the blazing heat, so make sure you get sunblock... and keep hydrated, the heat is a killer and drains you fast. As was said before, depending on what you carry, one bottle with water and the other with an energy drink works well.
  22. not very smart is it then... and people actually buy this? where is the sense.. dont understand..
  23. haha i saw the same thing, had to read it twice, and was still in shock... almost the same price as a second hand for figo..
  24. I would also be interested in something like this in the area, but not sure...
  25. I recently upgraded to a Scott CR1... WOW! brilliant bike, and bang for you buck!
