  1. Still have the old Crossmarks on, now with more than 6500km on. I bought a new one to replace the worn rear tyre but will probably only do that after 7000km. Doubt that any other make will give me this kind of mileage.
  2. It would be really nice to have the section that formed part of the STBB 60km route as an option on the trails.
  3. Pinotage day is Saturday the 10th. It is also the day of the STBB MTB ride so unless you are taking part in that even (which you should) I would not recommend that you ride any of the trails.
  4. Yup, those masts are not on the trails. Do not attempt to reach them as they are out of bounds. Purely for interest sake, here is how my dad and I got there after we obtained permission from the land owner.
  5. Been riding there for a more than a year and this was the first time I saw riders going the wrong way on a section that is one way. About reaching the masts, depends which ones you are referring to. You cannot reach the big ones on the current routes. I have gone up there once with my dad (he also has a year permit) but he had permissions from the land owner (our farm is close by). You can reach the mast at the top of the red route but you will either have to come in from Overgaauw or if you go up Kaapzight Killer you need to go left at the top and then take the Skaapsteker single track to join in on the red route. The mast is at the top of the "Extended Single Track" in the woods.
  6. Did you guys come up the wrong way to Kaapzight Killer? I saw one guy at the top waiting and on coming up as I was going down.
  7. Yikes! My main concern is puncture resistance, second priority is lifespan. I am not bothered with weight or grip. Seems like Crossmark remains the best choice.
  8. I have done about 4000km on a set of Maxxis Crossmarks LUST tyres and they have not let me down. There has been some hissing but they have always sealed themselves, I might add a lot less hissing that on the Sugaros and Ikons I have had in the past. So they seem to be pretty puncture resistant. However the time has come to replace the rear tyre and seeing as I do about 50/50 on/off road I am tempted to get another Crossmark. I am budget concious so I am also considering the Continental Race King Pure Grip 29 X 2.2 Tubeless tyre. Suggestions? Stick with Crossmark or try the Race King?
  9. Has any though been given to including the hill at La Provance into the Bottelary hills trails? I had a look at it on Google Earth and seems there are some tracks, not sure if it has ever been used? Maybe it could be integrated into the Zevenwagcht entry/exit route?
  10. I've been riding Bottelary since March last year. Always carry at least pepper spray on you. I have had to use it twice to fend off dogs that tried to attack me (en route to Bottelary). On the trails itself I have never encountered any problems or threats. Keep up the good work guys My biggest concern is getting into Devon Valley from Welgevonden and back. I make use of the long hill opposite the R304 traffic lights (part of Die Burger 43/60/75k) and on the other side I ride though Deon Joubert's farm (he knows me). This is the only place where I feel unsafe.
  11. I got a new frame under warranty and I still have bits and pieces to build up a complete bike. In the end I want to sell it all so what is the best way to do this? Is it best to first put all the pieces together and sell it as a complete bike or to keep the parts separate and sell individually?
  12. I fully support this initiative. The past two weekends I spotted rogue riders on the Bottelary Hills trail, the one dude was on a pretty expensive Lefty. I ride a R6k bike and I can afford a year pass of R450, why can't people with R24k bikes do the same? Such posers!
  13. Thanks, had an excellent ride. Having done the 42 twice before the new 57 was a treat. I am just a bit disappointed that there was no Port or Sherry at the top of the climb before the 42 and 57 split. Please make sure it is there next year or I might not be doing my 5th Robertson. Took this shot just before we started.
  14. I leave my trolling for myBB. I am dead serious here, my first post in this thread was merely stating how I feel about Jonkershoek and I stand by that. I can understand that is is hard for some people to see my logic and therefore they reason I am insane, which I could well be. The fact still is there are many excellent trails around Stellenbosch and as I enjoy quite a few of them. I am not trolling when I honestly say I have no desire to go to Jonkershoek
  15. Agreed. I'll stick to places with awesome views and little branding.
  16. Have you even read this thread? This is one of the reasons why I don't do Jonkershoek.
  17. I'm not quite mainstream like that, hence my initial response to begin with. While I do enjopy all the fine things you mentioned my taste is unique. Jonkershoek has become very mainstream - hence the branding issues and uproar.
  18. True, but even if I do get my dream 36er I'd still much rather ride it from Paradyskloof to Coetzenburg and on Bottelary than Jonkershoek. I prefer poser free routes.
  19. Actually it is not, Botterlary and Del Vera is on my doorstep. I know about the people and riders you encounter there through interaction with them, sometimes in person other times online, like here.
  20. Thanks for taking the time to reply. Currently I ride Coetzenburg (from Blauklippen) everyday after work as part of my commute home. There is nothing dangerous about it and the trail as it is currently is perfect. I hope that is not going to get changed or interfered with. Sometimes Giant messes up the place with logs and branded plastic tape but I can tolerate that. I own a year permit for Bottelary Hills and I enjoy riding there on weekends when no other rides are on. While it does upset me that some riders on the trail do not have day passes or annual permits I am sure there are many more who do pay in support of this excellent conservancy. Personally I just don't like the 'vibe' and 'attitude' that goes with Jonkerhoeks - I am sure the trails are magnificent but the riders/people...
  21. Ja well fine. I live in Stellenbosch (for 32 years now) and never set foot in Jonkershoek, never have - never will. There are plenty of other trails to enjoy, some free and some part of conservancies, I'll stick to those.
  22. Makes sense on a bike of that value, but my bikes are worth less than R8k and I plan to keep it that way. They can take the punch, I am not worried about a heavy bike and I know I can replace my drivetrain for less than a grand. So insurance in my case is only against it being nicked.
  23. Bought a 2014 Giant Revel 0 29er yesterday. Only taking my Deore brakes from the GT since the rest of the stuff on it is the same spec level (alivio/deore 9 speed mix). Keep an eye on the classifieds next week as I will be listing some of the bits after they broke up the GT. I will also be listing a brand new GT Zaskar frame made from 6069 "speed metal" with three year warranty once the warranty claim is complete.
