  1. I can only echo above sentiments. It was with a touch of trepidation that I entered, not being in great shape. So was a little apprehensive. But having ridden parts of the trails before, I was really looking forward to the amazing single tracks....well, more the descents. So there was only the small matter of the total ascent! A huge thanks to organisers for a fantastic event and special thanks to Ellane who arranged a locksmith to get my key out the boot!! The race went smooth as butter until just prior to waterpoint 3. A puncture didn't want to seal and 3 plugs later a new tyre was fitted. Lost 15min and made the mistake of wanting to catch up a bit of time. 2 lost water bottles, 2 corner slideouts and cramps on the last climb were the result. But overall the event, hospitality and gorgeous views and trails made up for it all. Thanks all, see you next year
  2. Any chance to link the Hoogekraal/Fair Cape loop to the Meerendal through the back? I mean on the D'ville side of the mountain (where Durby Dash goes along). But Quarry would also work. I know that is private property and Meerendal now have hectic fencing and gates....but where there's a will there's a way My reasoning: the best way to get in an ultra long ride, without too much tar or backtracking would be this link to Meerendal, better hooking up Conties with Hoogies and Meer and opening up many more options. Just a suggestion.....what do others say? Am i missing something?
  3. try here: https://www.tygerbergmtb.co.za/trails/
  4. I'm under-cooked at the moment....but will be there. Salivating for the descents....fearing the ascents....and will probably be swearing at myself for doing this on mountain climb 4 and 5...
  5. Favourable weather??? Temps going up to 30C is not very favourable in my books. Unless favourable refers to: best conditions for proper suffering!?
  6. That is one tough course all right....very technical, which is cool, but long climb there at the back. Lap three onward gonna be a haaard
  7. How fast does one have to be? I'd be keen to try one....but more of a marathon rider As a Vet...that start time will be hectic if the sun is high and burning your kop red as a lobster
  8. Also recently got this. Works fine. It will fit a mtb tyre (specially a 26") but haven't tried it. Am using a mtb slick. What I have noticed though, is that I am pretty much maxed out on resistance: the gear lever is permanently set on highest gear. The rear block is where you could tighten the screw to get a bit more resistance, but I don't want to overtighten this. For now I use my last bike gear for hardest work/standing repeats. So overall, good, decent and reliable trainer that does the trick without all the fancy add-ons. You get what you pay for. It's also an easy pack and go...if you do events and want to warm up with it.
  9. Keep it clean boys and stow away the handbags. Insulting each other or getting aggro doesn't serve anything. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, have their own experience(s) in any situation, but also please use restraint if you were not there, don't fully understand the situation(s) or feel wronged. We are debating and discussing - we see things differently. #justsaying
  10. Too late to experiment with this on this distance. You need to test what works best for you, there just is no one-fits-all formula. I have learnt over time what works best for me - but it's still being refined. A lot of factors play a role on the day too. So, you might get a lot of input but it is rather meaningless imo. To be honest, I haven't tried various gel makes as I tend to try avoid them. But for the last stretch they do work a treat. I use mostly natural food - which takes longer to digest but is better for my energy system. My strat: bananas (cut into handy pieces), a few small salty potatoes, salty nuts, a gel or two. You can also stop at WP and grab what you need quickly on the natural stuff - won't cost you much time. Making it to WP3 will be tough depending on weather and conditions. Generally the strat is to eat, drink (sips) in +-20min intervals. Good luck dude
  11. Weather looking a bit leaky again, especially on the Friday. Wonder if it will be as slippery in parts as last year. On the day should be only a few drupples here and there, cool enough temps and only a gentle wind about. New race record for you Milky? Enjoy boyz and girlz
  12. It can definitely get hot....but weather can be unpredictable. Especially on top of the Merino. Overall great race, and the addition of a prologue is awesome too. It is a technical event though, so prepare for that - if needed with skills course. Coming down Merino is steep and requires commitment in parts. Day four is mainly single track fun (after a a longish gravel road ride there). Pick a tent which is well positioned for dawn and dusk and you will be fine, even if it is hot. Enough shade around. The chill area will have bean bags etc. Maybe I'll see you all there!
  13. Yes. Just select them in the panel on the right
  14. Apologies for long post. First off, THANKS a heap to all land owners/farmers for allowing us onto their properties! You're mighty stars! Then to TMTBC volunteers and people involved: THANKS a ton for all your hard work and time. Mostly free. Most importantly, thanks for all the awesome trails. We are indeed blessed. Also thanks for the feedback/reacting when required. Lesson learnt in terms of communication - never assume. But also, don't take the words of a few to speak for all. Am amazed there are 7000 members! Awesome. Both above parties provide unbelievable opportunities with a rare thank you. My idea, maybe have an event once a year, maybe with a small ride, to meet and greet and share a beer? Apologies if this already done. Takes the people out of obscurity and we have a platform to chat, laugh and engage and thank! Or even offer a small moan or constructive criticism - and getting feedback we never thought of. Reasons why some things work and others not etc. Or join in on trail building stints. I would love to do this, just don't know how. Then, a suggestion to our community of dedicated mtb'ers & keyboard warriors: we all have valid personal opinions, but nobody needs to abide to anybody else's. Also, your set of circumstances, realities are always unique, so you cannot transpose that onto anybody else. Respect is key. If you feel aggrieved, take a breath and read a text again with another approach. Remember tone and meaning is not readable from written words. Lastly re price: how important is your mtb riding to you? Of course costs are a constant juggling act for all of us. Only you can make a decision what it is WORTH for you. Consider though, that we all constantly negotiate and sell things to ourselves before we buy: house, car, mtb or anything else....and it involves compromises. Am I happy that I need to pay more for access to all the trails? Not really, but if I consider that for one less evening of drinks or small meal out, I can have a year full of riding as much as or whenever I want, the choice becomes obvious. What are you willing to give up to gain? Alone the health benefits are obvious. For me, now knowing that more trails will be built is already enough of an argument, never mind that the farmers possibly get more. My calculation: R800 divided by 78 rides a year means it costs me R10 a ride. If you only ride once a week, then it's R15. If you ride less, well then get your ass out there!! PS I was so happy to stumble on happy hops trail today. I will call it happy beer (geddit geddit? Lol), cos it's so close to the Dairy Shed and a rewarding beer. Always missed this trail as I took the lower option. Love riding new trails! Happy Riding everybody!
  15. On another tangent: anybody else surprised at the number of flies around now? It used to be a few troubling me at certain places e g. Hoogekraal which seems to be a hotspot, but now it is way more spread out and there are way more. Ok ok, my body odour probably contributes....but I'm choosing my rides according to fly pest levels. Geez. Any feedback from the farmers out there? And then, the additional Altydgedacht loop is cool...adds some alternatives back to Bloem. BUT anybody also a little concerned about the shooting range off to the side? When I used this the first time, it seemed that the guys didnt shoot until I passed a certain point, which I very much appreciated, but still a feeling of unease there.....
  16. On the snakes part: I nearly bumped into 3 cape cobras in 2 days over this last weekend. One was at the beach though: at Horsies as I was about to jump in for a surf - this after a mtb, where I nearly rode over one at Meerendal. In fact, I literally rode right past that one at Meeren and he/she never budged or blinked. I am always motoring so only spot them late. Once, I needed to bunny hop one at the Bloemendal to Majik corridor. Generally they do move off quickly when they hear you approach, so I am not too concerned. Also, they are really very seldom aggressive. Time wise....i think good luck if you're looking for the sweet spot. Don't think it exists. But don't be worried, just ride. And enjoy. Chances are very much like a shark attack.......skraal!
  17. 60km same route as last year? Too lazy to check it out...
  18. Gutted. Entered and can't take part. Need to go to JHB. Will miss the fun. 70km had my name all over it.... Enjoy everybody
  19. Elevation? What elevation? LOL It's tame....just adjust your speed and enjoy
  20. Sorry for the hijack...but this needs to be seen: Unbelievable stuff...and a little funny. Direct contrast to our conditions lol
  21. I commute often from Blouberg through to town and back often late at night (7pm). Luckily, i have never experienced any hassles, except for the usual obstacles of dirt, glass in certain parts (squatters) and inattentive drivers. Albert Road is a definite challenge too. However, if we look at the grand scheme of things: this has been a step forward in a car-centric society combined with our monumental social issues. So, is it cool? No. Is it a massive fail? No. Is our society in massive transformation and law abiding citizens few and far between (us cyclists also break numerous laws on every ride, let's be honest). So, if we can, let's make positive contributions, make a difference, make suggestions or just plain help where we can. And enjoy your ride - and be safe.
  22. I will definitely also be back next year. I totally underestimated this 75km ride. Not having done this before and limited real info, I was expecting more gravel grinding. Boy was I pleasantly surprised - cos I actually prefer technical and difficult routes. Having said that, I bombed badly as I missed some vital nutrition and thus crawled into the finish from 10km out. And my number board kept falling off (cable ties broke!??!) - so a few stops to shove it back into my rear pants lol. My improvement suggestions: * no single track after 500m - major congestion immediately strung the whole pack out. And I needed some wind protection! lol * that first sign post which rerouted us A batch wrongly was probably swayed by the wind - so placement of boards is key - and maybe track knowledge of leading motor bike? * there were some unclear markings/routes along way, so maybe some sand/white arrows or something? Saw some guys take "short cuts" (unintentional) because they easily missed some sign boards. Can't think of anything else right now. Course was great - some rough, tough sections and hard climbs. Natural habitat though. Can't help the sand much if there's a drought - so no complaints there. Loved the single track at end despite having bonked. And it's close to home - nice sleep in and there in 20min. Next year will take an hour off my time
  23. Rain only from evening - but the most accurate prediction will only be from Wednesday earliest. Update to follow Thursday. Flies a real pest on the Hoogies "Atlantis" side...actually keeps me from riding there more often. Hoogies is my favourite track! But I rather go to all others on the hot days...
  24. Rain only to arrive by evening...so will be dry, dusty but temps are looking nice. Not as hot as last year. But remember things can still change weather-wise - by Wednesday/Thursday it should be clear. Enjoy guys and gals! Maybe I'll do a short term decision to join....
