  1. In the few weeks I've been here yes, the true for Spain too. I'm hoping that when we go to the city the supermarkets there might have what I need. Otherwise I will have to redo all my recipes. I always said you should adapt to where you go so I'm good for that. Also they do not drink diluted cold drinks here. So it's wine or water. I'm not a big fan of pure fruit juice and I would get used to any "oros" substitute, but there just isn't one. I've been buying fruit juice and watering it down. I'm sure after a year we will have worked it all out.
  2. Oh just to add to the wine bit. The wine here is good for €4 and great for €7. So very cheap drinkable wine. I always have to allow a bit of weight in my suitcase when I travel to take a couple of bottles but you can give that a miss coming here ????????
  3. So for all the ladies following us. I will say South Africa is fabulous for fresh veg and herbs. For all the great markets here in Spain, you will have to get your bearings right in a foreign country. No Food Lovers here or anything close. Everything you CAN get is very fresh, big and beautiful. Big, as in peaches the size of tennis balls. I could go on how lovely it all is. BUT you will have to rethink all your favourite recipes. Ingredients are rare for all sorts of old favourites. I especially miss finding an Indian stall at a flea market with big buckets of spices where a man will fill a kilogram bag with a special blend that will make your curry night parties memorable forever. Spices and herbs are all dried here. So as much as I love it, being (a limited) foodie, I do miss Food Lovers Market (for now). I will have lists for every one of you who come to visit. Don't worry about the wine that's good. You won't need to add that to your weight. SA wines of course are the best in the world but we can adapt. (Of course we can, we are South African) so spices are on the contraband list.
  4. So today is the festival of the spring onion in our little village. All 50 people will be in the pub for a gastronomic onion evening. With all their home made wines too of course. They never skip the wine. I have found my tribe
  5. We went for a walk on Monday and found that the track starts outside our soon to be kitchen door
  6. Packing my bags and booking flights. I will be with Bonus on Saturday. ☺
  7. I think I'm going to be so homesick I will just be too glad to see you all.
  8. Holy smoke this makes me want to cry. Said goodbye at the airport and thought after all the agro of packing (and Bonus did indeed salvage a lot of junk that I tossed out) enough for a good fight. I thought thank heavens he is leaving early. I need a break. But tonight I watched him go and thought maybe I can shorten the 9 months I was going to stay away from Mr agro. I will go in 2 or 3 weeks. He looked so sad and forlorn.
  9. Ha you guys are making me laugh. Much needed a day before the container arrives. There will be no talk of "girl" slavery. Bonus became dangerously close to doing all jobs on his own for the same talk
  10. Thank you Slowbee. My take has been so hard and easy. (If that makes sense) my beloved South Africa (and I truly love her) is falling to bits and this is so sad for me. Im rooted here. I have a daughter in New York and my son is staying put in SA. Spain is so beautiful so I will take the leap of faith and go. I desperately want to go as I know it will be good for my soul. Spanglish is becoming our second language which is hard. The rand has dropped so low we are never comletely sure we will make it but we are now at the point of no return, so its do or die. That said, its amazing how friendly and helpful these people are. They are so anxious for someone to come and uplift their villages they are all willing to help with a meal while we are building or even a handyman and left over materials for gratis. The fact we have so many home people behind us keeps me going. I dont say much but i do read all the posts. Thank you everyone. You all have me in tears wvery now and then. X
  11. Thank you everyone who wish us well, and even those who are sceptical about what we are doing. Now that its all ours I have to get my skates on and leave my lovely broken SA. I will enjoy a celebratory glass of champagne at the casa shortly, in between my tears of sadness. My parents arrived in SA 47 odd years ago and i was a small child. I feel like Im tearing a piece of me away. Very hard
  12. My 5c worth. I bought a GT Zaskar (woman specific) about 4 years ago. It was 13k and I got it for 11 because it was "last years model". I looooove my bike. No clue about specs, but I love the name and the colour and all the bits on it. Sometimes that's all it takes. Good luck OP. I don't think you will ever get decent advice from so many different opinions on here. Everyone has their loves based on so many different aspects. Take your 8K and go and see who will give you the best bargain for your bucks, if you love it, you will always love it (till you have more bucks of course). Enjoy mountain biking. Im a roadie who likes mtbing because I love my bike.
  13. I will put what ive got so far up tomorrow. Nicked it from a friend who does iron man. Soon as im finished the batch in the fridge I will adjust it a bit
  14. I make date balls. Recipe still a work in progress. Gotta get them a little firmer, but they are great for a chocolate substitute and packed with energy

    Argus 2014

Havent had time to read all the pages here and just reading what I can in the car. I LOVE these big rides. I end up laughing. If you just listen in (its called snooping) to all the conversations and the topics. Its hysterical. Then I saw a guy with an entire tuck shop in his back pocket. Just watching him choose WHAT to eat and WHEN was amusing never mind him finding it.

    Argus 2014

Thats the spirit. There are too many serious riders starting too late with the "fun bunch" yes there are loads of wobbly inexperienced riders but thats why they start late. They enjoy their ride even though they are oblivious of the 100's of accidents they nearly caused and so if you are amoung them, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. I had some young guys behind me, we were all struggling against the wind and they were having the funniest conversation about carrots and green beans. I dont know what was hardest, the struggle against the wind, or not falling off from laughing. It was hard, but so much fun
  18. As a girl, we just love getting free stuff. Always cool to see ANY thing other than pamphlets in a goody bag, even cereal you know you don't like.
  19. No man I have just read it again, and I am still laughing, if you don't win a spot in this MTB race, I will eat my socks.
  20. I had tears streaming down my face reading this. Well you didn't get the kiss, but she will remember you for the rest of her life. This guys has GOT to get an entry

    Dear Motorist

Oh that's so common, Ive seen cyclists finish their ride in the cradle, pack up their bikes then as they drive out the parking lot onto the road, they pull out straight in front of another cyclist. Its amazing but idiots come in all shapes and sizes and love all sorts of sports. Inconsiderate idiots drive cars, ride bikes, take a bus and sit next to you at a concert or the movies. Unfortunately there is not escaping them.
  22. No Rastaman, I was in the last group leaving that would put me in the 55km group. No no unless its enjoyable I wont be doing the big rides, that would definately take all day. I barely do the Argus in 5 hours and thats without stopping for a drink at the Brass Bell or anywhere else people are always saying they stop for a "lunch".
