  1. Spot on Brogue - even if people may have a problem with PPA, they are a voluntary organisation and people have the choice of supporting them or not. On the other hand CSA is not.
  2. Looking at the ASA / SASCOC debacle who now wonders what value these organisations add to sport in this country?? And if they have the interest of athletes at heart?
  3. Plus all the CSA officials and their mates that will attend via a Business Class flight... Maybe also look at how the USA send athletes to Olympics etc. Sponsorship's are sourced privately and they are given by companies because they can gain something from it. How many companies in this country have walked away from sponsoring sport due to the mismanagement of funds and very scant returns for our athletes? "Unlike most other nations, the United States does not have a sports ministry. The USOC was reorganized by the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act, originally enacted in 1978. It is a federally chartered nonprofit corporation and does not receive federal financial support (other than for select Paralympic military programs). Pursuant to the Act, the USOC has the exclusive right to use and authorize the use of Olympic-related marks, images and terminology in the United States. The USOC licenses that right to sponsors as a means of generating revenue in support of its mission"
  4. Not always sure that all people think it is the right thing to do.... It is simple economics - you enter a multi stage event and are required to pay a CSA fee that far exceeds the R75 annual fee. Or you enter a few events around the country and again R75 a bargain. So in a way people are forced to take out the CSA membership.
  5. The joys of government interference...... http://www.citizen.co.za/citizen/content/en/citizen/sports-columnists?oid=436869&sn=Detail&pid=146826&Administrators-at-top-keep-wasting-money
  6. Exactly my comments regarding sports in other clubs... what most are missing is that whenever SASCOC has got involved in any sport it has been a shambles. Have a listen to the following podcast from Graeme Joffe. There has been much controversy in athletics, swimming to name a few sports. http://joffers19899....T10_11_22-07_00 from about 16:30 Maybe the only difference regarding PPA is that they profess to be a level below a club and promote the "funride" concept to get people involved in cycling. In my mind and any other social rider they are still only an avenue to ride a number of events per year. And lately they have been very involved in cycling safety, building MTB trails giving members discounts to ride, and some other initiatives. That said keep the money grabbers away from it
  7. Also CSA gave a letter to these cyclists they could use to ask potential companies for sponsorship to go overseas. BUT guess what? The letter also states that the money must be paid to CSA....
  8. Some selective paragraphs from the affidavit: PPA is the largest cycling organisation in South Africa with 18,433 members as at 13 March 2013. It was formed some 35 years ago following the first Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour ("the Cycle Tour") (commonly, but incorrectly, referred to as the ―Argus Cycle Tour‖). Its activities are restricted to the Western Cape. PPA‘s objective is to promote cycling in all its forms. PPA further acts as a representative and lobbying body for furthering the interests of cyclists, and was formed to liaise with and affiliate with similar organisations where appropriate. PPA has developed an extensive fun ride programme in the Western Cape, and has co-ordinated its events on an ongoing basis since 1976. These fun rides are timed, but do not award prize money. Most of the fun rides involve service organisations such as Lions and Rotary, and have also included schools wishing to raise funds through cycling events. PPA provides administrative, logistical and technical advice and support for these events.8 PPA‘s fun ride programme has been extremely successful over the years. No other cycling organisation in South Africa has developed equally successful cycling programmes or arranged mass participation cycling events comparable in scale to those that PPA and the Trust organise. Since 2009, PPA has invested approximately R8.8 million on deserving cycling projects and has also spent roughly R1,500,000 on development cycling. In addition, during 2011 PPA invested R2.1 million in its Safe Cycling Campaign. CSA, on the other hand, is a national sports body, affiliated to the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (―SASCOC‖). CSA‘s activities are focussed on the high-end of the sport, which includes awarding of national and provincial colours for cycling, and participation in international cycling events.
  9. Debate is about PPA and CSA. Am trying to say PPA is a club in the Western Cape, nothing else. Compare that to a golf club or any other sport club and see what they do for their sport. Am playing devils advocate to a large extent, but just see a successful organisation being targeted by a tarnished one and just wonder what the motivations are???
  10. Why must they??? - it is a Cape Town club. I am sure you have clubs in KZN that should look after you?
  11. So how is PPA different than a golf club membership. Amateurs get the chance to play on the course and compete against each other. Another system in place if you want to take it to provincial, national or professional level.
  12. Stupid question. What is the difference between PPA and say Dirtopia or the organisers of the Sani2C, Joberg2C or a club such as Cyclelab, Tygerberg MTB, Epic etc. All are "associations" that collect your money at varying rates for the privilege to ride their routes or events. In each case you still have to fork out the CSA licence fee. So is the PPA being targeted because it just happens to be a succesful organisation with 18000+ members.... Just asking....
  13. There was a thread last year some time when the PPA matter first surfaced. Does anyone remember it as it very much pointed to the cash flush position of the PPA and the fact that they were not prepared to share this with the CSA. Or something like that....
  14. What nobody is asking is why is he doing it? Maybe this will give more clarity: http://mobile.nytimes.com/2013/01/15/sports/cycling/lance-armstrong-admits-doping-and-says-he-will-testify-against-cycling-officials.xml Is he gunning for the UCI officials and joining the band of others trying to get rid of them. And what a way to get off after repaying some debts. Then write a book like the others and make back the millions
  15. Off the topic, but have a look at this advert and think about (1) how few road deaths there are in Aussie and (2) how all road users in this country need to become more considerate of each other. This is an eXtremely well made (Australian) commercial... One of the most intense (gut-wrenching) I've seen. Fact is, only the "tell it like it is" campaigns really ever impact. Even then, people often think - and say; "It'll never happen to me..." If THIS doesn't save lives, I'll be surprised - disappointed too of course. (I'll leave it up to you to share, in turn) Take a look... CLICK ON: DUI
  16. There is no way that they will test all amateurs, but there are many that compete in the top 50 and these are the ones that will and should be targeted. Then again, they must be idiots to do it. Just for bragging rights or the odd sponsor to an event, as they are not making money from it. If that is the case good riddance to those caught. Maybe for them a similar award as the Darwin award!

  18. The Absa Cape Epic, the most televised mountain bike stage race in the world, has announced that it will tighten its rules regarding anti-doping by introducing a lifetime ban for future offenders in the wake of the first high-profile doping case in South African mountain biking. 19. I have been searching for Maltodextrin for a while now and have eventually found some. If anyone in the Cape area is interested (am in Somerset West), I am willing to sell off at R60 for 2kg. Also still have the Jeukendrup recipe if interested and have been very happy with the results (both cost and on the bike!) PM me if interested
  20. This from the Fedgroup team website. Pro MTB Team | Welcome to the homepage of team FedGroup-Itec Connect. Three professional and dynamic riders complete the current team outfit, with an exciting new addition coming soon! 22. William’s winning time for the 55km race was 2 hours 04 minutes and 55 seconds. Platt finished second with Andrew McLean (Toyota Cyclelab) third. Nic White (Toyota CSA u23 team mentor) finished fourth on a single speed bike. Dylan Rebello (ASG Eagle Canyon) was the first junior to finish.
  23. Better result is Nic White 4th on a single speed!
  24. Hi, is entry still available?
  25. That is the feeling I get. But these are one of those parts that vary from frame to frame even for same make. Difficult to source at best of times. Making it did cross my mind - business opportunity there! Sell them for R100 each as most people use it as backup in stage races.
