  1. After today his name will never be left out again in any discussion about who is the most complete cyclist in the world.
  2. Men's tri is now on DSTV.
  3. haha...very good.. Old Frankie as Yster Swart
  4. "Now I‘m old, I’m 30, and I started to realise that all those people who say they know, they actually don’t know. Many of them don’t know, and especially those who say that they know, don’t know, because those who do know say that they don’t know." - Anna Kiesenhofer, Olympic gold medal winner.
  5. How to win an olympic gold medal in cycling according to Anna Anna Kiesenhofer the anti-authoritarian 'mastermind' of her own Olympic glory | Cyclingnews
  6. Perhaps that is why she was the only cyclist in the field who was not confused about who won the race
  7. I think Brad has a very good point this time. The fact that it was man on man with no team radios etc probably played into the hands of a streetwise rider like Carapaz. Race radios obviously has its place in the sport but I found it quite refreshing today to see the riders having to do a bit more thinking for themselves. A few even seem totally lost
  8. Yeah, as per usual he went down. As did Tao G Hart, who has clearly taken lessons in the art of crashing from G.. I wonder if Ineos will even offer G a new contract as has just become too much of a risk.
  9. So Mr Gritty himself takes it ahead of all the rock stars. Only the second gold medal ever for Equador at the Olympics. They had only 2 riders in the field so Richard was really up against it. What a rider!!
  10. I saw Rohan Dennis withdrew at the last minute from tomorrows road race in order to focus solely on the ITT. It is probably best for Rohan but Richie P and the other 2 in the road team must surely not be happy especially as they were already a man short in comparison to the strongest nations. The pressure is now really on Rohan to win the ITT.
  11. If putt putt ever becomes an Olympic sport Bloem would be a good host city. Many years ago I was forced to spend a weekend in that place and I can remember they had a very good putt putt course. They were so proud of it that they even opened it on a Sunday.... the rest of the town was completely shut down ????
  12. Does anybody know why Meintjes is not in the Olympic team? Surely the route suits him more then it suits Ryan for example. Maybe he was not available?
  13. Personally I do not like the idea .. is it not like using a flight simulator instead of flying a real plane ? I also read somewhere that bigger taller surfers like Jordy for example does not like it as much as the smaller guys (Kelly Slater) do.
  14. Jip, he went for it and came up short . From what I have read he really wanted badly to go to the Olimpics... hopefully he will get another opportunity Fantastic surfer who can pull off the most spectacular moves.
  15. Pity that Jordi is missing out due to injury. Would have been one of SA's better hopes for at least a medal.
  16. Tough luck re Plapp ... I see he is also in the Australian track team for Tokyo. At least your team has not wasted time and signed another excellent young time trial star. Jumbo Visma is probably not very happy about it
  17. It is a complicated issue. In my opinion the advantage to be gained from drafting in the swim is less than when cycling. Obviously it also depends on the conditions... if the ocean is rough drafting becomes harder etc..etc..etc. Not sure how much benefit pacing in running provides. Also much easier to kick an overzealous "swim drafter" in the face ( there goes the goggles) than to get rid of some pesky specialist runner on your wheel Anyway... this debate is not for this thread.
  18. The "new" rules probably make for better tv viewing but I fully agree with you.
  19. Irrelevant but just for the record: When tri's it became popular in SA it was completely dominated by a big ex navy diver and swimmer who also had frightening power on the bike and was after the bike leg so far ahead that none of the better runners had a chance to get close to him. No drafting was allowed back then. I doubt whether Richard would have ever caught him.
  20. He was a world champ in the duathlon before he switched to tri.
  21. On the subject of American female cyclist I see Chloe Dygert is entered for road and track. Taking into consideration the extend of her injuries any success in Tokyo will be remarkable. If she is fully recovered it will probably be nearly impossible for anyone to beat her in the road ITT.
  22. I Just read an article on netwerk24 in which they listed the SA athletes who they reckon have best chances for a medal. The names mentioned are: Tatjana Schoenmaker, Akani Simbine, Blitzbokke, Chad, Wayde, and Men's rowing. Not a word about Alan or Ashleigh. .
  23. It is very hard to predict a winner. Seems the course is super hard while the humidity/heat can also be a factor so it makes predictions even more complicated. I hope Alan wins and if he does not then either one of Matthieu or Tom Pidcock.
  24. Yes, he will for sure move up, but it could come at a cost and is not ideal. One would like to see that the best rider(s) do not have to start at a disadvantage. It is nearly like asking Novak Djokovic to play the first set with a weight in his pocket or even left-handed. Mind you, he will probably still win
  25. According to Wikipedia: Rudolph Ludewyk "Okey" Lewis (12 July 1887 – 29 October 1933) was a South African road racing cyclist who won the gold medal in the road race at the 1912 Summer Olympics.[1] Lewis was born on a farm near Pretoria and grew up in Germiston. He worked full-time underground at a gold mine, and in spare time trained in cycling, boxing and skating. After the 1912 Olympics he raced professionally in Germany in 1913–14, and won the classic race Rund um Dresden in 1914.[2] During World War I, he served in the German Army and was awarded the Iron Cross. His health deteriorated as a result of war injuries and time spent in a prison camp, which resulted in his early death at age 46.[3]
