  1. Hi, I would enter now. At least you have the opportunity this year to do so because next year (2020 Comrades) you will have to qualify FIRST before entering. Entires are selling out fast and should be sold out by the end of this week. You can always sub out if you not up for it.
  2. I would structure the 2019 race in this manner: * Marathon Qualifying time - 4Hr40mins (Makes it more challenging to qualify - ''gives the race more prestige'' and keep the tail enders honest). Less medical incidents before cutoff as people are forced to train harder to qualify. * Entry - You MUST qualify BEFORE you can enter (like what they want to do in 2020) * Entry Fee - Yes it increased to R600 but so has the winners prize money and charity contributions - no problem there. * Charity Runners - Runners that have raised R 6000 for charity shouldn't start in 'C' batch by default which often causes bottle necks as they often not quick enough for this batch, they should start further back in 'E' batch * Cut Off - Remains 12Hrs * Entry Limit - 20,000 runners (less runners to navigate through - batches not so big) * Special Medals - Hell NO! (Comrades is built on history) * Clothing - Mizuno (Can the manufacturers finally sort out their sizing - always miles to small based on size) *Busses - Should be a rule that busses MUST keep left on the route to allow faster runners to pass on the right. No group of runners should take up the entire road. Just my 2cents worth.
  3. Hi All, I am selling my Polar M600 Watch if anyone is interested - watch is basically brand new. https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/329036-polar-m600-watch/ Thanks
  4. Got a Diamond yesterday. Only problem, you can get fark all with 1 diamond...
  5. Also went to MBR sport because my Brooks Ghost 10's were killing my legs in races and actually started to doubt my fitness. Did a full run analysis and bought a pair of Saucony Ride 10's which is a neutral show with slightly more stability than others. This DRASTICALLY improved my running and will never look back.
  6. I sincerely hope that the entries for Comrades is not increased for next year. The roads just cannot handle the masses in the first 20-30km's. It must not become like a 94.7 where Joe Soap can buy running shoes and finish. I would even go as far as making an 11hr cutoff or alternatively more difficult seeding time/less batches.
  7. ITB is such a difficult thing to manage. I got ITB issues this year about 1 1/2 months before Comrades. I can suggest: 1) Make sure shoes are correct 2) REST!!! 3) Do plenty of stretches (Dont foam roll your ITB directly, foam roll glutes/quads/calves) 4) Work on core strength and imbalances in your core (Side clamshell raises, pelvic thrusts etc) 5) Dry Needling to ITB (Hurts and not comfortable but This really helped me get back on track)
  8. Hey guys, Jeeeeez, any of you battling to get going after Comrades? I have had my running clothes ready to go but getting up in the morning has been VERY difficult! haha
  9. Well done to everyone that finished. I came across the line in 11H03mins - felt great when I finished. Watch died at 7hrs so lost track of time a bit - will aim for Bronze next year when I do my back to back. The support along the route is mind blowing!! I hope they don't make the race too big as the roads cant handle it - was frustrating trying to get past all the buses taking up all the road in the beginning.
  10. Last week before the big C. This build up is driving me insane...cant even function at work now with all the thoughts of gear, nutrition, logistics, bonking/not bonkings running through my mind This is pure torture! Good luck to all the guys running - lets all get to the finish line in one piece!!
  11. Sorry to hear that Hacc, hope you come right. I had dry needling on my quad and hamstring to hopefully sort out my ITB niggle - almost jumped through the roof when the needles got to my muscles. Not sure about everyone else but I have felt very tired lately - feel like I can sleep the whole day! Going to try get some proper rest this weekend into next week. Think it is nerves as this damn race is on my mind a lot, hahaha.
  12. No unfortunately not. Missed it by 3mins at Johnson Crane (4:03 marathon), 4mins at Irene (4:54 ultra) so was close. But happy to start in F batch for the first one, dont want to be seeded above my ability.
  13. Couldn't agree with you more. Think we all in the same boat (My paranoia is amplified because its my 1st Comrades)!!! I almost want to wear a mask on the Gautrain which I travel on daily to prevent flu. I think its not a coincidence that runners start feeling niggles close to the Comrades - think we all SUPER aware of aches and pains now which normally wouldn't bother us. Im listening to my body now, the training is done and not much more you can do to improve. If you tired - SLEEP, if you sore - REST. We have all done huge millage over the last 5 months so now is the time to let the body get in shape before next weekend!
  14. Ran with Hazel Moller the other day. She runs 10 x 90 km's in 10 days (The 10th day being the comrades). She does it for charity. Insane amount of running, don't know how these people do it??
  15. I find that drinking coffee before I run makes my stomach not too lekker (almost wakes the digestive system up). It is critical that you eat before you run if you running more than 10km and especially with Marathons/Ultras where you need the fuel. I would maybe try avoiding foods that agitate you gut such as grains, dairy, caffeine etc. What works well for me is 2 x hot cross buns with peanut butter on. Then just before race time, I have a banana and the usual race fuels such as dates, nuts etc.
  16. Sorry to hear that! These knee issues can be a handful and dont seem to go away. My ITB seems to be improving (Well doesnt hurt with 10km - doing a 30km this weekend). Have been doing plenty stretches and strength training for the glutes, hamstrings and quads. Will also go for some acupuncture... Goodluck and hopefully we see you at the start line. Rather be rested and under-trained than start injured and over-trained,
  17. Yus, you guys are giving me serious butterflys. With this being my first Comrades, I have such a mixed feeling of excitement and nervousness. I just want the day to come now because so much work has been put into training. You almost want to wrap yourself in bubblewrap before to prevent any niggle....haha. Running seems to be unrivaled in terms of tradition, passion, atmosphere. My aim is to take in everything on the day and ENJOY the day!
  18. Found these articles quite helpful: http://www.32gi.com/how-to-eat-drink-in-the-week-leading-up-to-comrades-marathon/ http://www.32gi.com/how-to-get-your-comrades-marathon-fuelling-right/
  19. I think all the advice is valid SwissVan. I have heard from numerous people that you musnt just stop running. In my case - because I have done the Millage already, I am going to not run for a week or two to let the knee rest. Think what caused the ITB issue was over exuberance on the Loskop Ultra downhills followed up the next weekend with a tough hills session.
  20. Haha, its just first comrades panic on my behalf. Its just such a long race and I have put in a lot of training km's so dont want to fall short now. Just shows how important stretching is. I usually wing it with cycling and running and rely on my general fitness but I guess if you doing huge millage this is what happens. But it seems ITB is a very common problem with runners which comforts me a bit, hahaha
  21. Thanks for the advice Shaper! Did you take any painkillers on the run?
  22. Hi, Thanks for the advice Barry. Its just foreign to me as I have never had a niggle like this before so not sure how to handle it? I ran Colgate 32km on Saturday and felt good (running average 5:30's/km) up until the 25km mark and then the good old hot knife stabbing on the side of the knee reared its ugly head. I don't use painkillers with running so that option doesn't really appeal to me. Seeing the physio on Friday because I am so busy at work at the moment. Will rest this week and see what the physio says, I dont just want to stop running completely, want to have a decent taper before Comrades...
  23. Hi Guys, I need your advice! With Comrades coming up in 1 months time, old Murphy reared his ugly head and I have an ITB strain on my right knee. Probably the result of hill training and also the long millage I have done over the last couple of months. I know this is subjective BUT for those who have had this issue before, What is the average healing/down time for an ITB (Mild Strain) niggle? I am seeing a physio on Friday and doing all the required stretches to the glutes and quads. Also whats your thoughts on dry needling and cortisone injections? I just want to sort this out as soon as possible. Not worried about adding on more millage at this stage as I have already done plenty training (1000km). Thanks guys
  24. What millage you guys sitting on at the moment since Jan? I'm on about 960km so reckon after next weekends long run, i'm going to taper down with shorter 50-60km weeks.
