  1. Going to fit some platform pedals so shouldn't be any scuffing .. I hope
  2. Can't help but smile - awesome!
  3. Every time I need some inspiration for my current build I just have a look at this thread! There are some incredibly drool worthy bikes
  4. Thanks man - in all honesty I never set out to do so much polishing, I was going to prep the frame and send it off to be spray painted and then reassemble using the parts I had and go ride. Has turned into quite a project, at this rate looks like I'll only be riding in 2014! All worth it though and I have to admit I'm seriously enjoying doing it!
  5. Next up was the Ritchey seat post - once again sanded down and then polished up. To do this didn't take nearly as long as the chain ring above! Some before, during and after pics:
  6. And for the weekends contribution so far we have one very polished homemade bash guard / ring! This is the one that I made up using the big chain ring and in keeping with the polished cranks I decided to polish this as well. Was an absolute biaatch to do - the shape and the corners kept tearing into the sanding blocks, and the black anodising takes a LOT of sanding to get rid of (did it by hand using the medium and fine sanding blocks before polishing up). A before and after pic:
  7. I actually first sanded the crank arm by hand using a medium and then fine sanding block and water; then wiped it down and started up the trusty old drill and polished till it got the "shine" It took longer than I thought it would so I went to bed Will try and get to the other arm over the weekend.
  8. While most people are fast asleep I'm busy polishing mtb cranks Started with the one arm last night and managed to finish it - it's sweaty, dirty, DIRTY, work; don't let anyone tell you otherwise! Some pics of the polished arm next to the unpolished one.
  9. Other riders might just have to make sure they're wearing their sunnies on a bright sunny day BLING
  10. Thanks for the link, looks like 2013's Christmas present has been found
  11. I used the paint stripper, then lightly sanded the entire frame using a fine sanding block and water, only once it was pretty smooth (but still quite dull) I switched over to using the polishing attachment on the drill. Maybe I should do an entire thread on the tech Q&A and detail the process?
  12. Excellent, thanks Flowta
  13. I hear you brother So much for "I'll just polish this little bit here, oh, and now this bit here, and here, and here .."
  14. Faaarking hell that's insanely cool! I knew I should never have started polishing the frame At this rate I'm probably going to start polishing the cranks next
  15. Excellent - thanks gummibear
  16. Please post some pics - currently shopping for my little 2 year old daughter
  17. Flowta thanks man - will definitely look into that, any idea who stocks locally or am I going to have to order from CRC or one of the other sites?
  18. What it looks like when assembled ...
  19. While I'm trying to source or manufacture the derailleur hanger I was cleaning up the crank set that I'll be using (Shimano XT) and ended up making something else ... a bash ring or guard. Basically took the big chain ring and cut the teeth off using the Dremel and then filed that smooth before polishing up with sandpaper. If I want to add some bling later I can always have it powder coated or just spray it.
  20. Thanks for the heads up - I'll have a look at the site
  21. Given the small quantities needed for something like a derailleur I use Metals Centre in Jhb city - they cut to size and you end up buying only what you need so no offcuts lying around in the garage They pretty much stock anything from aluminium to copper to mild steel in most of the common profiles and thicknesses
  22. Excellent, just what I wanted to hear Looks like the next weekend project ...
  23. Hey hubbers - I'm struggling to find a rear hanger for a frame that I'm converting to a SS; all the usual searches like www.derailleurhanger.com turned up zip. Has anyone actually made up a hanger? I'm thinking along the lines of some aluminium plate cut to size using a template (not too difficult to make up using the frame and some card board)? Silly idea or might it actually work?
  24. I managed to find some decent car polish and spent an hour or so polishing the frame. I wouldn't say the polish made the frame any "shinier" for lack of a better word but it did make it feel a whole lot better if that makes any sense - you know that smooth new car paint feel?
  25. Damn! Well done!
