  1. Anyone know where you might find these (around JHB specifically, or somewhere local online)? I keep seeing them recommended for massage, releasing muscle tension. They're cheap on Amazon of course, but shipping can triple the cost. And I want now
  2. Would rather just have glucose... Ensure is not food and certainly not low GI. http://www.naturalnews.com/002698_Ensure_food_marketing.html
  3. I've gone back and read this thread in its entirety, since it seemed to deserve it (very rare on a .za forum, sadly). DAMN I wish I'd been following it in winter, that was when I started experimenting with keto. I struggled with cycling for a couple of weeks before deciding keto was good for fat loss, not good for cycling. I'm a commuter not a racer, and it's a bummer when you want to get home but your legs seem completely uninterested in getting up the hill. Now I've read how having energy but no power is a normal part of the adaptation process... ugh might have to go through it again. Maybe not as bad, I've been doing low-carb for some months, but I wanna tighten it up and keto properly with the aim of it being permanent. It is now clear to me that it's important to keep my heart rate low, just gear down and spin. And I now also know to add salt generously (I recently read "Art and science of low carb" by Volek/Phinney) Got some pink salt from Woolworths on the weekend, I hope it's the real deal. Question though: regarding illness, it seems dry toast and flat Coke is a common response for upset stomachs. Is this simply for easily digestable energy? What's the low GI alternative? For more serious illness or cases of prolonged inability to eat, is there any hope of not getting a glucose drip in a hospital?
  4. lol no worries there, I don't eat land meat and would happily starve rather than step into a fastfood restaurant. Thanks, I think I understand, if the body is regulating itself then presumably if you did eat excess fat it would have to be excreted (since without sugar/insulin the body can't store it anyway).
  5. tombeej - I haven't been following this thread at all, but your post yesterday was very interesting, thank you. I have a question regarding typical LCHF dieting. Is calorie counting supposed to be a part of it? Several sources I've read claim eat all the fat you want, no need to worry about calories. Intuitively this does not make sense, does not extend logically. If it did extend you'd have guys with ripped abs who were eating blocks of butter for breakfast and buckets of KFC for lunch and dinner. You'd also have guys looking like rakes, while eating thousands of calories of fat every day. I ain't never seen nunna dat. (Or are they out there and I've somehow been missing them? stranger things have happened I guess) So can it be that there's no need for calorie counting in the early-mid stages of fat loss, but once you get down to low levels of bodyfat the dietary fat intake has to be monitored/restricted? Or what's the deal?
  6. I ride in work pants and shoes, and a t-shirt. Granted in summer sometimes I'm a bit sweatier than I'd like to be, but most of it is on the home-leg when there's still a good amount of sun left at the time I ride. In rain I'll either wear rain-pants, or if it's raining in the morning I'll just wear shorts and some other pair of shoes. I've also got no issue with dialing it back a few notches and spinning it nice and easy so I don't work up a lather. I'll never wear proper cycling togs - I do not want to be associated at all with roadies or racers of any kind.
  7. That's not normal. When you say you need to replace is that because it's skipping or jumping or something? What components is it?My bike is on its second drivetrain, all basic Shimano, which if I'm not mistaken has already outlasted original parts by a couple thou kms.
  8. Glad you're okay dude, that was a close one indeed. A taxi with insurance? I bet he has a valid driver's license too
  9. stephkah - I have two chains, one pretty heavy/thick the other a bit less so but longer. If I'm parking in a real dodgy area I'll use both, but mostly I actually just use the lighter one. I know, I know. Been very lucky so far to always find my bike where I left it. If you have quick release wheels make sure you're looping the frame, the wheel(s) and whatever it is you're chaining to. On one or two occasions I've actually missed the last point (and still came back to a bike!) I always try chain up somewhere that's either near guards (proper guards, not car guards), or close to foot traffic without being in the way. Usually somewhere near a shop entrance. Be aware of who's around though, use common sense. If you've just ridden past a bunch of guys outside the parking lot who all had their eyes on your bike, it might be best to postpone the shopping. Also if you're using chains, use a decent padlock. One day, probably after my bike gets nicked, I'll add a cable lock to the mix... damnit I should get a cable lock now, I love my bike!
  10. What's your destination suburb? I'd either go the Benmore/Parkmore/Bryanston way, or depending where you're heading, even go up Rivonia rd into Sandhurst, from there into Craighall to Jan Smuts rd area. The latter would probably add significant time to journey though.
  11. Roadies and joggers alike seem to share one fundamental rule: leave common sense at home when going out training. I live near a sports club so unfortunately often encounter joggers, like their cycling brethren, 3-4 abreast. I almost had a run-in with one gang recently as there were cars approaching for that magical "all lined up at once" effect where the cars, joggers and myself would all pass in the same moment. I rang my bell and got sworn at. Maybe next time if I approach them with my left arm out, clothesline style, they'll move over.
  12. Okay! I was wrong, they are still about. I managed to borrow a camera (a Nikon Coolpix L25) and find a model. 10c coin for size ref. (click image to see full size)
  13. haha, have no idea actually, usually I'm only aware that I'm swallowing one as I'm swallowing it. I think you'd have to have quite a few of them in your mouth before you could really taste anything, being as small as they are.Anyway they seem to be true to their name as I'm not encountering them this week...
  14. I think it could be this... they're really tiny, difficult to note any characteristics. I don't have a camera that's going to show any useful detail ;(
  15. In the last week I've noticed a proliferation of these tiny green insects flying about aimlessly (this is in Jhb). I've had several end up in my eyes and must've swallowed a dozen easy. Anyone else? I remember when I used to motorcycle, on Sunday rides to Harties I'd take a little bottle of window cleaner with to wipe down my visor and headlights because they'd get covered in the little buggers. Anyone know what insect it is exactly?
  16. I gave up greeting roadies and joggers a long time ago. Tired of the stoney sullen non-response. If I see a fellow commuter (usually recognizable by riding a mtb on road, with backpack) I greet and typically will receive a response. However I greet pedestrians often, especially ones I see regularly on my route, and they always respond, it's great.
  17. I've seen it suggested on here quite often to carry pepper spray as a means to deal with aggressive motorists. Has anyone actually used it on a motorist?
  18. This morning as I was heading down a hill, a wanker in a Beemer turned across me into a side street, but one with a wide approach that drivers tend to take quite fast. I'd watched him approaching and my gut-feeling was he'd be turning, so I'd already slowed down quite a bit. Did he indicate? Of course not, so as he made the turn I made the "use your indicator" fist-to-splayed-hand gesture, and his reaction was (from his facial contortions) to start swearing at me as if I was in the wrong for coming down the hill, and we then exchanged fingers. Just gotta let it go...
  19. Nice. though in pic #4 it looks like his smile is about to drop...
  20. It sucks but what can you do. I'm not above pulling over on a hill and letting upcoming trucks/buses/smelly SUVs climb up suitably ahead while I take a 'breather'. If you've got a particularly busy hill on your route where you often encounter this, may be worth considering a re-routing.
  21. And don't forget - SA, the copper exporting country with no copper mines ;)I've also received those gel samples with orders, would've been highly unimpressed with customs if they got shirty about it.
  22. This thread achieves little but to highlight the selfish self-righteous attitude that SA cyclists seem to adore. We can't really be surprised or offended when every other group of road/park user label us collectively as douchebags as a result.
  23. I don't own a car, so every day (about 5k each way). A few weeks ago I had to work Sat+sun for stock-taking, combined with riding from the week before and week after that's... too many days riding without a break!
  24. Well if motorists resist purchasing etags, Sanral might be open to bringing a new market on board. Would you put an etag on your bike?
  25. Local shops are going to catch a hard wake-up if they aren't already... I don't even waste my time looking locally for cycling accessories any more, because I know the range will be minimal, if any, and the prices ridiculous.
