  1. Been riding the XT for a few months now and its as smooth as silk!! Its also easier to adjust should the need arise.
  2. agreed, JHB is a big city. To be more specific im refering to the spruit, northern farm and surrounding areas. Club rides aside, anyone who rides those areas regularly with some other guys/girls that I could hook up with??? Saturday mornings??
  3. Hey all, My cycling partner got taken out by a motorist on Sunday, and hes out of action for the rest of the year. This primarily sucks for him, but as a result I lost my riding partner!! Anyways, I want to find out if there are any group rides that I could join up with in the JHB area on a Sat morning, nice and early for a 2 - 2.5 hour ride. I forgot to mention im a MTB'er. Thanks!!
  4. Hey all, DanielXT, my riding partner got knocked off his road bike this morning at the traffic circle by the mcdonalds near louis botha ave in jhb. The car jumped the traffic circle at 80kmh and smashed right into him. Hes in ICU now with several broken bones and a head injury. I just went to see him and hes 100% aware and knew exactly what was going on. Docs are waiting for the head injury to clear up before they start with the broken bones. Heres wishing him a speedy recovery, and to all of us out there, lets just be extra carefull. Cheers
  5. I was riding an avalanche 3 disc before i upgraded to my new bike. I still actually have it if you looking for something 2nd hand. I loved the avalanche. The only reason i never kept it as an upgrade is because it never had hydraulic brakes and by the time everything would have been said and done with an upgrade, i could have bought a new bike. So thats what i did:) The GT is a rock solid frame, some would say a touch too rock solid as it can be a bit bumpy. But looking at the specs id go for the GT, its a beteer base to start off from if/when u upgrade. Let me know if u keen on my old bike!
  6. Did the pilots survive?? That looks pretty intense!!
  7. No economic crisis for you my friend!! I like the idea of a 30k mtb a 30k road and 10k for the Mrs Seriously Im a big fan of enjoying your cash, rather than looking at a swelling bank account. Gees but 70k is a fortune. My 10c, if you determined to pick up a bike for 70k the Trek is gorgeous. Try get the same colour as Contodor!!
  8. Hey Desert Bob, I ride with a mate religiously on Sat mornings at about 6am. We ride for +-2.5hrs at a pretty steady pace which obviously depends on the terrain. We ride places like the spruit, northern farms, linksfield ridge. You more than welcome to come along.
  9. Just bought a pair of first ascent yesterday for R800. They feel pretty comfy. Will let you know how they ride!! Astana hows the new Merida??
  10. Joek r u interested in a gt avalanche 3 disc?? R3500??
  11. phillip maree, I agree with u 100% on that saddle. I personally think its a disgrace. I mean you paying good money for the bike, but that saddle is basically a piece of plastic with a cloth covering. I put a specialized on and so far so good. Cant understand how they can manufacture such k@k
  12. Hey Astana, Congrats on ur new purchase. Im sure u gonna absolutely love it. I did my first race on Sunday with the TFS 900, and it never skipped a beat. That XT is rock solid. Mr Merida, I like ur taste!
  13. I bought that bikes kid brother, the TFS 900 last week. I paid R12k for it. Its exactly the same, just the technology in the frame is 'not as good' or so they say. I absolutely love it though. Very happy with my purhcase.
  14. My new bike has an XT crank which I am told, and I can see, has the hollowtech technology. Basically it appears to be sealed on either end of the BB, by 2 cap like thing which are screwed onto either end ot the BB. Do you think this reduces the chance of getting dirt/grime etc into the BB/Crank area, or am I at the same risk level as a bike without?
  15. I think the general consensus is that Im lazy and that power sprays are probably not the best idea in town Ok ill give the clean green, bucket and brushes thing a go this weekend. Its just that the power spray is so quick and convenient
  16. I bought the TFS 900 last week. Went riding Sat & Sun and I love it. Its got pretty much everything I need.........for now
  17. Hey all, So i have heard from numerous riders, that cleaning my MTB with a high pressure spray is dangerous because grit and grime can get into all the little nooks and crannies and can cause premature wear. So I want to find out if this is true, because I struggle to get my bike 100% clean without the pressure washer, and just the prdianry bucket of water. Can you use a pressure washer safely??
  18. I agree with drivetrain. It would'nt be fun to see people who have dedicated their lives to this sport go down in flames for this. However, a crime is a crime and I, as a South African consumer, am sick of being ripped off when purhcasing anything, not just cycling equipment. For instance clothing is so expensive in this country when compared to overseas countries. At the end of the day it all comes from 10 factories in China and is marked up 1000%.....period. None of us actually know how much collusion there is out there, where we, the consumers are being nailed each and every time we buy something. The competition commission is the one entity that is actually there to help us out and protect us. It sucks for them because their names are being tarnished, but for once it would be good if justice was not only a luxury of the rich. Best of luck to them. I think they will get through it unscathed.
  19. Hi guys, Im considering a new hardtail. The one component that Im doing circles in my head with is the fork. The one bike has a rock shox recon, and the other a manitou drake air. Now as I understand it the recon is a coil fork and the manitou an air fork. Firstly are air forks that much better?? Secondly are they really a pain to service?? Thirdly is there a huge difference between the recon and the tora?? Im looking for something as hassle free as possible that will carry on going for a few years to come. Thanks
  20. Its called handlebar paulsy. Ive had it also and I did some research a while back on it. Basically you have a nerve in your arm called the ulna nerve. It runs from your elbow down to just below your pinky. When you ride, and dont change your hand positions for more than 15 minutes at a time, the nerve can become compressed. Th end result are the symptoms u describing. I put bar ends onto my MTB. It gave me more riding positions and I have'nt had it since!! If you still unsure do a search for it on the net. Good luck!
  21. go onto you tube and search for clips on ''how to adjust a rear deraileur'' ive done it and its pretty easy. It actually performs a pretty simple function, and it all comes down to cable tension and alignment. Good Luck!!
  22. haha was meant to say 6ish as in 6am
  23. anyone riding northern farms this SAT AM??
  24. Anyone going to be going on the spruit this Sat AM round 6ihs from rivonia side??

    Numb hands

its called handle bar paulsy. basically the ulnar nerve which runs to the bottom of your thumb get pinched and inflamed which causes numbness. Its extrememly common. Ive had it a couple times, but it generally went away after a few hours. Not sure if you have a mtb/road bike, but i have a mtb and i put bar ends onto it which helped massively. you need to change your hand position every 10 minutes or so. bar ends just added a few more hand positions. i occasionally get it now but its very mild, gone within 30 minutes. you actually get special grips called argo grips or something. cyclelab has them and they got huge pads on them. R700 though.
