  1. Hi hubbers. I recently changed to a 1X11 setup with a 34t. It has been great and worked just fine for the spruit, up Northcliff Hill, Modder, Northern Farm but on a training ride at Suikerbos yesterday I was fine up until the last big climb. My legs had no power left and I made it to the top in my worst strava time. My question now is, should I change to a 32t for Sani or take a 32t with and get mechanic to change for day 2 only. I'm not too worried about day 1 and 3 on a 34t. Day 2 scares me alot.

I have also gone to 1x11 XT with a 34 in front. Been using it since Nov last year. Have ordered the 32 this weekend as find it just that bit too heavy for some of the bigger climbs we have at Holla trails. The 32 will help with that. My suggestion for Sani, is to go with the 32. You can always go back to the 34, but day 2 out of the valley can be a SOB.

  2. What do you think of the R71 per photo for digital download? Understand these fellas have to make a living, but that is just not cool.

    Thoughts?

Agree, its a rip. They normally discount after a few weeks, but still.

  3. Update on Nic Bac from Facebook,  holding thumbs for you Nic,

Update #3 on Nic: unfortunately it is not very good news. The doctors found some transverse damage to his spinal cord that had not previously been detected in the MRI scans. They say that this cut was not leaking spinal fluid ( we assume that to be a good thing) and they inserted a sleeve to prevent future leakage and promote the closing of the cut. The fusion of his back was however very successful and they are satisfied that his back is now stable. They are not committing to whether he will regain the use of his legs, saying that is up to him and the rehabilitation process which will start almost immediately. Sadly, it appears that spinal shock, which we all had hoped was the initial temporary cause of his loss of feeling and mobility, has now worn off, so his continued lack of mobility is now as a consequence of the spinal cord damage. The 15 rib fractures are all ribs that have torn away from the spine, which they worked on as well last night.

He can now at least be moved with confidence and we hope to be able to relocate him up to JHB within days (not weeks), where we will continue an aggressive rehabilitation process . We have not lost hope but we are also trying to be objectively pragmatic under the circumstances. Thank you all for the continuous outpouring of love, prayers and well wishes. Nic and the family at large appreciate it emmensely

Please pass on my best regards. Having seen it happen he was on my mind the whole way. Speedy and full recovery.

  4. Anyone know the status of the person whom had the "major accident" on the Trail... Rumoured to have 15 broken ribs, punctured lung......................?

Rusty250, it was the Adventure, day 1 at the little bridge on the district road about 2km from the first water point. He was ahead of me and just saw him flying through the air and land on the rocks in the river bed. Hectic!  Understand he was part of the Emirates Air team, and would also like to know how the poor guy is doing. Slowed down riders and then left, not sure that he would make it. Worst crash I have ever seen.

  5. On the subject of prizes, lucky draws and the like. Would it not be possible to do all the entries for these online prior to the event. Then everyone goes into the draw. In our case we only had one entry form for the car between the two of us. Its also not right that you have to be at the daily debrief to get the prize, one might be getting a massage or standing in a shower. Sure insist that the finalists are at the final draw to win, but not daily.

  6. Sniffie...you got lucky (or maybe they saw the 'insider' coming)

4 Sani's in a row now and every year my Steak is way overdone and tough as hell.  Our group resort to taking our own steak knives along for the tussle

Good Beef - yes certainly.   Flavour great - but boy are they destroyed.

Yip. Probably great as they come off the grill, but 30mins in a dish on a hot tray destroys the steak. Not the end of the world tho.

  7. Passed 3 tiny tots walking along the stony track on day 3 of the adventure, oldest one couldn't have been older than 4! Luckily had time to shout out and warn guys behind. Hitting a little kid like that at speed would be nasty. Who would be held responsible??
