  1. What's the Reader's Digest version of this?
  2. That's really good to hear. I was also on the titty juice for a couple of months after making the switch. Didn't really buy dairy yoghurt or cow's milk, but didn't blink an eye for baked goods (my Kryptonite) with dairy and/or eggs in. Took me a while to break that habit.
  3. Never saw that one coming. These okes in the video will probably think you're a riot. https://youtu.be/zvDoX9QwKuI?list=PLtc3iQTP5EZ_6oCLjvntAdfTP8Js-gD1c
  4. What's on your mind?
  5. A local burger joint here in Belgium (think they're in France and NL too), Ellis Gourmet Burger, is now offering the Beyond Burger. Folks couldn't taste the difference between a cow flesh and a Beyond Burger (according to this little promo vid). https://www.facebook.com/EllisgourmetburgerNederland/videos/974153186110700/
  6. Devon farmer 'too upset' by slaughter gives lambs to Kidderminster sanctuary https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-47026123?fbclid=IwAR0LrQkZVARbPqNIehg5XkJAoz0fDSmdGujQKYYY4ixpShRPv84Go2w0MaY
  7. I'm curious. Is her supplementation on the basis of a Dr's recommendations or her own? The only supplement required on a vegan diet which cannot be obtained from the diet is B12. Considering that the global dietary supplement market was valued at USD 133billion in 2016, I think it's fair to say that it's not vegans funding that market Regarding the cost, I think we've discussed this at length - it's as expensive as you want it to be. Keep in mind, upward mobility = more animal product consumption.
  8. I think we're perhaps conflating two separate, but related, interest groups. Asking that question to dogmatic animal rights activists would be similar to asking the Jewish community if 'just a little bit of Antisemitism is okay'. Granted, it's not a particularly elegant comparison, but you get where I'm coming from. Remember, in whichever movement, you're going to have people who fall on a spectrum, with dogmatism on the one hand and pragmatism on the other hand. Personally, I like to consider myself a pragmatist - I have no qualms accepting that 97% of a population strongly curbing their animal consumption will have a greater net effect than 3% vegan. So, I'll encourage that reduction. Like I said, I'll still advocate for veganism, because of the ethical aspects (why kill and torture defenseless animals if you don't have to) and the fact that greater benefits can be netted by fully plant-based than just 'a little bit of meat'.
  9. The thing is, ask 100 people "Do you think you eat a balanced diet?" and 98 will answer "Yes!" Would that be the case? I don't think so. The problem is having people understand the problem and then actually take measures to truly limit their consumption. If the world woke up tomorrow and everyone eating a typical Western diet ate the diet recommended in the recent Lancet study, would I be happy? Hell, yes! It would make a huge impact on human and planetary health and would save so many animals from suffering. Would I then stop advocating for veganism? Hell, no! Why? Simple: necessity. We do not need to exploit animals. Why do it if there is no need? Even if we could turn the clock back to the 60's we'd be better off. https://ourworldindata.org/meat-and-seafood-production-consumption
  10. I have a set of Minions in WT and a set of Rekons in WT. The Minions feel great on my rims and I can run fairly low pressures and not have them squirming on me. I think the DD casings play a big role in that regard though. The Rekons on the other hand, in EXO casing, need high pressures to prevent them from rolling. Bah, I guess my gat brand net for some new wheels. If I bust a wheel, then maybe I'll look into it.
  11. Those are exactly the questions that veganism try to address. Again, diet choice isn't just someone's choice. We're ~7 billion people who are trying to share a limited number of resources. A growing global middle class who all want to eat a Western-style diet is only going to exacerbate the problems of climate change, human health and the plight of the animals. All of the recent reports that came out on this topic stated clearly that we can just sit back and have folks eat whatever they please. Regarding your final statement, not to sound condescending, but you're fundamentally wrong on that and I think you probably know it. I've posted this elsewhere, but I'll do so again: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19562864
  12. Thanks for taking the time to write a detailed reply. I think that many who use the term 'vegan propaganda' miss one crucial element: the deception. The Nazi's (I could bring up Godwin's Law at this point) deceived the German populace into believing that the Jews were the source of their woes. This was obviously not factually correct. Does slaughterhouse footage / footage of circus animals being abused / footage of abusive farming practices / etc. used by 'vegans' attempt to deceive people? If someone went out of their way to actually stage and film a scene of animal abuse, distribute it and claim it to be true footage from a farm or whatever, that could be propaganda. Lifting the veil on the horrors that we collectively visit upon the animals and this earth is not propaganda.
  13. While on the subject of tyres, who here has gone from around a 25mm ID rim to about a 30mm ID rim. I'd like to go slightly wider to make full use of Maxxis' WT tyres, but I'm gonna be pissed if I replace perfectly good rims and then feel virtually no difference out on the trail.
  14. Here's a question. Taking the social dynamics that you alluded to out of the question, do you consider it fundamentally wrong that humans not exploit other animals for food, entertainment and other purposes, if we know that it is not necessary to do so?
  15. Transitioning from a soft to a hard knob dramatically improves performance.
  16. I get what you're saying. I think tactics like Peta's dog braai is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it gets media attention, because rags and websites want sensational content to get reader engagement. I think that Peta's reasoning is that they can get a foot in the door and drive awareness from there. On the other, it has the potential to close people off from the message or give folks ammo to brand 'vegans' as dog BBQing freaks. It's really difficult to gauge what the net effect is at the end of the day.
  17. I think it is important to be cognizant that that 'piece of meat' on one's plate is not just 'meat', but is a part of an animal that was bred into existence for the sole purpose of being killed and who lived a short, unnatural and miserable existence. That such animals are part of a larger system that is compromising planetary health, human health and is neither sustainable, nor ethical. I think the day will come where we no longer have to kill animals for food - whether that be through cellular agriculture or otherwise. Unfortunately, we don't have the luxury to wait around for that to be commercially viable on a global scale. Thus, it is important that people are educated on the need to minimize as far as possible or eliminate animal products from their diet. The phrase 'vegan propaganda' has popped up on this thread a few times. Mind explaining what you understand as 'vegan propaganda'?
  18. Dude, the internet is littered with pro-this and anti-that memes. No one should use internet memes to inform life choices or take it as a reflection of real social interactions.
  19. Last night's dinner: Bok Choy with steamed tempeh, brown shrooms, some red bell peppers, in a garlic/soy/ginger sauce. I don't usually eat white rice, but we had some basmati gathering dust in the cupboard, so we threw that in. Very, very yum! We were all out of miso, so just chucked some extra soy sauce. P.S. Yes, there's no place mat. I'm a barbarian.
  20. Some, but not all. It's important for 'vegans' to be cognizant of their own carnism and their past. I would've probably had a moerse hissy fit if someone judge me for eating meat back in the day. That type of approach will only breed resentment.
  21. I get where you're coming from. The idea is simply that we cannot, as a society, say that it is a 'personal choice' and 'you do you'. Has a single sheep, cow or chicken ever consented to their death at a slaughterhouse? Why are only we allowed to choose, but those who die by our hand do not. We now need to start making mindful choices that will benefit us, the animals and the planet.
  22. Patch, I get what you're saying. I truly do. I think perhaps you need to consider a few things: 1. Veganism is not about vegans - see below; 2. You seem to consider activism as binary - an action will either be detrimental or beneficial to veganism. Having spent a lot of time looking into this and even based on interactions with folks, people have very disparate motivators. I've met vegans that are almost apathetic to animals, but are still vegan for other reasons or just because they can accept that animals have a basic right to life and dignity. On that basis, people react differently to activism. You might consider Peta's actions as detrimental, but it just might help a few folks open their eyes to look more closely at their relationship with animals.
  23. Regarding the 'fakeness' - in short, these mock meats are just an easy way for people to make the switch without having to sacrifice familiar flavours and dishes. It just shows you don't have to 'give anything' up when eating a plant-based diet. Regarding the environmental impact - there's no debate unfortunately. The research is clear: a plant-based diet has a smaller carbon and environmental footprint than a meat-based diet.* https://www.wri.org/publication/shifting-diets *It's a spectrum, though, so the footprint is dependent on each person's consumption.
  24. No, no. You didn't. Not putting your words in your mouth. Just stuck that in there as you get some folks who will have the retort of 'it's not the real thing, so I'm not interested.
