  1. Tracey, yes connoisseur quality coffee plays a role BUT you are up against serious competition in the form of traditional secure parking offered for years at Bidon, Valverde, Rhino and Lion Reserve Riverstone Lodge a bit further afield but still part of the main Cradle ... it won't be easy ...
  2. Please don't worry, you are not discouraging me to ride my bike..!

I may join you... will you kindly provide confirmed dates, suggested routes and accommodation option or where you will book into ? My email address: jfvanschalkwyk@gmail.com
  4. Anyone planning another Johannesburg to Durban during 2021...? I would like to join !
  5. Thank you, I have done a ride from Fourways through the Cradle to Maropeng (the museum)... road from the T junction turning right after the caves, becomes narrow and rough along the edge no option to bail out onto the shoulder ... but thankfully I made it...
  6. Hi Guys, I am planning a 2 week trip to do some riding away from Johannesburg... a bit tired of riding the cradle 3 to 4 4 times a week. The coastal areas are obviously scenic but need to plan the ride accordingly... also not a good idea to ride on the N2 ... But where in the country do you think is the best place for rod biking.... Thank you for your responses.
  7. Thank you to everyone that contributed to this chat, much appreciated! Can I ask if sone of you have experience of the stretch of road from Rooi Els to Gordons Bay? I have not been on this road for about 10 years... is it ok to cycle, narrow, some space with a yellow shoulder... thank you
  8. Hi Tyrone, have you teamed up with riders from Weltevreden Park yet?
  9. Thank you ... but unfortunately not my favourite cycle shop....
  10. I would join a new group... what is the point riding an e-bike? Rather get an off road motorcycle ...
  11. Yes, we park at Riverstone Lodge, just off the highway...gives you a nice hill to climb towards Kloofzicht / Bidon... Regularly see riders on Hendrik Potgieter but not keen to join them with taxis and big trucks driving on the (yellow) shoulder...
  12. US Embassy won't let you in ... even if you are dying on the sidewalk in front of their gate...!
  13. Thank you so much for all your replies!!! Yes, apart from the hills and the pass, the headwind will be a major factor determining the time we ride and direction... thinking of getting dropped off in Villiersdorp in the morning and scale Franschhoek Pass with the southeasterly more from behind... I rode from Wellington over Bainskloof Pass to Ceres and back about 2 years ago and had to fight the wind coming back from Ceres...!
  14. We going to spend some time in the Franschhoek - Helshoogte - Pniel wine-lands during October and look forward to do some cycling.. tired of the hills and dry landscape and wind howling through the Cradle... I scanned the forums but not seen any recent posts of cycling safety on the major roads surrounding Frranschoek... I have noticed the R45 from Paarl to Franschhoek have narrow sections before getting to the T-junction and turn off to Pniel. And yes I am aware that there are major hills in the area... Will greatly appreciate advice from the local roadies on general safety and road conditions ... thanks.
  15. Yes I agree, too many idiots!!! Take it easy on the bike... take it easy when you drive... be patient and in control of yourself temper!! Have to admit my pet irritation is drivers with bikes on a rack behind their cars coming from or going to Bidon and elsewhere driving like maniacs... pedal your bike in stead of showing off and throttling your expensive SUV or macho double cab ... bunch of complete idiots!!!
  16. Good advice, look at the hands... I do this when driving and approaching a red traffic light and intersections as well... a person with hands behind his back or in his pocket walking along the queue of cars is potentially a real danger..
  17. It is higher risk to do shopping then riding your bike....
  18. The driver should be charged with man slaughter but reality in SA he will get away with a minor fine....SAD SAD SAD!!!!!
  19. How was the ride? Very challenging when I last rode it...
  20. Yes, I agree, cyclist beware of Emirates, they are the worst airline to fly your bike with, I should add second to Bangkok Airways who simply offload you bike box with all the other luggage and simply throw suitcases and luggage pieces on top of your bike!
  21. I had a similar problem... Emirates make you sign a form that indemnifies them upon check in, in case they break your bike... I also stopped flying with them!
  22. You are correct but we are focussing on the Cradle
