  1. I applied for an Aussie tourist visa yesterday...

What a mission! Way more involved than a French Schengen or any other tourist/business visa I've ever applied for.

For Brits, Yanks, and a number of other countries, an Aussie tourist visa is a quick and free online application.

For South African passport holders, it's AUS$135 as well as providing the following (along with other information):

    • Family composition forms
    • Payslips & bank statements,
    • Lists of assets
    • Letters of invitation
    • Proof of employment

So as much as I love SA, it seems our passports are only really good for SADAC countries, and a few places in the far east.

Definitely going to be a perk of Kiwi citizenship one day.

...then try applying for permanent residency... Took me months & cost me an arm and a leg and then some...

  2. Thanks, it accepts the address, used Santa Cruz [emoji48], my problem is the payment part which it insists on. Will try again when I get home. Probably going to pull the trigger on a Roku 3 for the main TV and put the apple with the kids

Use vouchers to do payments if you ever need to do payments. You can buy the vouchers with a SA credit card but they are for the US store only.

  3. What was the results here?

I don't know yet if I HAVE to do it, but I fear this will be the most difficult test in all this immigration thing for me to pass......   I hate languages

Mate of mine (also an engineer) did the his NZ application without doing the IELTS exam. He just got his employer to write a letter stating that they do all their business in English & included a couple of work related emails. Get the okes at Maties to write you a letter stating that you did your course in English. Maybe a letter from your school too. Could potentially get away without writing the test and save a couple of gorillas in the process.

  4. Why? I don't watch tv every day but when I feel like watching something, so far I've enjoyed the documentaries and when I'm after something fluffy I'll put on a romcom. I find there's more stuff on there that I've NOT seen rather than the constant - I've seen that.., I've seen that scenario I experienced with DSTV.

Ditto for me - ok so maybe not the romcom stuff but everything else you said :) If I watch an hour a night that is a lot.

  5. Happy with my unccapped /netflix setup with apple TV

Very. I do not watch a lot of tv (about an hour a night). Did not bother with the US Netflix setup as the SA store has more than enough content to satisfy my 1hr need. I have a 8mbps line and do not get any buffering when watching full HD with 5.1 sound.

Not using the appletv app anymore though. I have a LG smarttv with the smarttv app. Lets me browse on my ipad Netflix app and then directly stream to the tv if connected to the same wireless network.

Used the appletv app before they launched the smarttv app. The interface is much slicker. I just prefer the browsing on ipad/streaming to tv feature of the LG app more. The LG tv app has a very 90's feel to it.

Enjoy the radio feature on the appletv. Lots more options than the DMX dstv thingy. Pity they made the iRadio option a paid service. On the US itunes account it's $9.99pm. Do believe that it is R60pm if on the SA store.

Was in Spain for business last week. Managed to watch Netflix on the ipad whilst I was there since Spanish telly is very Spanish. They had more content than the SA Netflix. Was not aware that you can "roam" with your Netflix account which is pretty cool. Will be interesting to see what the DRC has to offer next week... Not holding my breath though...

  6. I disconnected some time ago and got a VERY strange call from someone purporting to be speaking on behalf of DSTV. Asked me if I had disconnected and whether I was planning on reconnecting. In the middle of her question, muttered "calls are recorded". When I replied by saying that I wasn't planning on joining DSTV, said "Thanks for you time" and unceremoniously cut the call.

Anybody else had a similar call?

Yup... Got the same call with the same attitude.

  7. That's exactly how my setup works. Set the UnoTelly DNS addresses in the DHCP section of your router so that every device on the network asking for an IP address gets the UnoTelly DNS as the standard.

Another trick that works really well is to have the router automatically update UnoTelly whenever it's IP changes like after a reset or when Telkom decides to reset the connection. UnoTelly has good instructions how to do this on their site somewhere.

    Thanks!

  8. Here is an interesting comparison to the service levels between NZ and RSA.

On Monday 11th Jan, i popped in to my local AA store. You know the kind, the sell roadmaps and AA memberships. They are also the "retail" arm of the department of licensing.

to apply for a NZ drivers license I filled out 1 form, had my eyes tested, signed and they took my photo. Paid a few dollars and left.

This morning (14th) i checked the postbox and found my license.

The letter was dated 12th January.

That means in 1 day they received, processed, printed and dispatched my drivers license ID card. Plus another 2 days for the post office to send it to me from the office that printed it (500km away).

    3 days.....

Wonder how long that sort of thing takes in SA?

Now the reason i am telling you this is everyone talks about how expensive things are and so on...but when a country is this efficient and it has systems that work, it makes it less stressful to live here. Back in Jozi, i would get myself in a flat panic every time i had to go to home affairs or the licensing center. Everything is simpler here and that makes Wayne a very happy little camper.

I'm in week 21 of my alleged 6 week wait for my unabridged marriage certificate...

  9. UnoTelly won't influence ShowMax. UnoTelly is selective to particular sites / web addresses for example www.netflix.com and www.hulu.com and only "intervenes" when one of the those addresses are requested.

Cool thanks. I have a smarttv & appletv and was thinking of setting up the DNS address at the incoming router so that all the devices connected to the router will see the Unotelly address. Do you reckon this will work? At the moment I'm using googledns.

  10. My sister is just waiting for unabridged birth certificates for the kids and then all her paperwork etc will commence.

Giving some serious thought to following them over...

What are you doing that side work wise Wayne ?

At the risk of hijacking Wayne's thread - the good lady at home affairs told me that it'll take 6 weeks. I'm on week 12 and still waiting... They can't tell me when it will be ready. What they don't tell you is that there is a bunch of forms you have to submit on application. BI30 to name one... My BI30 has been submitted to them 5 years ago and I (nor the dominee fella) do not have a copy. Now we wait... At least the agent said it is not a train smash if you do not have it... Received an SMS this morning stating that my police clearance is at least getting some attention...

    Apologies Wayne, great thread.

Ooops - I was referring to unabridged marriage certificates.

  11. I have a question about that Luminox.... are the "glow in the dark" markings easy to read when its dark. They say that they are very bright but are they really??/ I.e. sit in a movie for an hour and then glance at the face and be able to tell the time..??

Bright as f&*k. They do not need a light source to charge. They always glow. Pretty much the same as on their website.
