  1. Thanks HeyYou, Eppie sorted me out I love this thread and all the retro guys that are keen to help with all the bits we need.
  2. Nice bike! Where did you get that bar tape BTW? I'm doing up a Biannchi that came out with that exact tape so looking for it locally before I do the e-bay thing.
  3. Hey IH8MUD here you are It's not in showroom condition and I still need to get the Campy RD, levers and brakes but it's a long term project that i'll do as I find the bits. It rides very nicely though.
  4. Hi Guys, I am trying to build a wheel set for a mid 80's Lejeune 753 I rescued a while back. I have the original back wheel and managed through a fellow Hubber to get a NOS matching red anodized DRC rim All I need now is a Suntour Superbe 28 hole front hub the same model as the pictures below. Not easy to find I am sure but I thought I'd put it out there and hope one of the retro guys might have one to sell. Thanks, Barry
  5. "But, some cranks could fit 39 tooth chain wheels. But still tough on the old legs! But, wait, there's more!!! Racing triples were available!!" If that is not enough put a 7 speed 11--28 or 11-32 freewheel/cassette on then you will be sorted. There might be some clearance problems with the 32t but I've got one running with a Shimano 600 Arabesque RD and no problems.
  6. its horrible but it all seems to work shift etc although the brakes leave a bit to the imagination(you imagine you will stop but you dont ) number - 30 711 stamped into the dropout but no number under the crank on frame anyone? is it worth saving or should I just keep it as is (add oil) Hi Bikebloke, That's a very nice Peugeot, I wouldn't be in a hurry to re-paint it. Strip it clean up and service it for a start. Don't use any sandpaper or steel wool please Spray oil and a brass brush used gently will remove the rust scale on most parts without damaging the plating or paint then use a bit of wax, even chain lube works, to stop it rusting again. Be carful of the decals and stickers so mild carwash and no solvents. If you want to freshen up the paint then you can gently polish it with car polish. I love the patina on the old bikes as it is a connection to their history and you could still do a full restoration later if you are so inclined.
  7. I know Hey You, Loose Cog, Eppie and you were there. Anyone else? We had a chat about your Lejeune frame just before the Brandy stop
  8. My late 70's South African made Lejeune photographed during Eroica last year. It's 531 tubing with a 600 Arabesque group and brooks leather saddle. I love this bike and named it Karoo Racer
  9. When I have cycle that stretch recently I ride in the bus lane, that way I don't need to go close to any pedestrian that might turn out to be muggers and if a mugger wants me he had to step onto the bus lane which would give me some warning of intent. It feels a bit safer and so far the bus hasn't run me down
  10. I think another big problem in SA is the lack of cyclists on our cycle lanes. If there was a constant stream of cyclists using the lanes things would sort themselves out naturally. Having a cycle lane like in Green Point with maybe one cyclist every couple of minutes means most people are not even aware that these are cycle lanes.
  11. It drives me mad too so I found a number for the Cape Town Traffic dept and whenever I see everytime I ride along Albert Road I phone in and report the cars. The last time I did that there was a cop dishing out tickets when I rode back about 45min later The number is 021 5961999 perhaps if they get enough calls they might ticket there regularly...
  12. Great Post DJR, It was a fantastic day. I did the 140km and wished I had done the more social 90km with coffee stop Here are "olffie1" Sven and "Loose Cog" Steven looking strong on the 28 km first climb! This is "Eppie" Eric and Bill Morgan riding in his team jersey from the 1973 Rapport Tour.
  13. If anyone still needs that classic finishing touch for their Eroica kit Velotex is making a Retro range.
  14. What a great find DJR. I also think Woodstock Cycleworks would be the place for it as Morph said. You could also photograph the other interesting pages and load them to a gallery for everyone to see? Do you know who the riders on the cover are?
  15. Hi Lance, The idea is, I think, to experience cycling as it was in the early 20th century when a lot of the riding was done on gravel roads as there weren't nearly as many tarred roads as now. It was also started to help protect the last gravel roads in Tuscany. The rules state no cyclo cross or mountain bikes so it's road bikes only. Your old bike would love it
  16. Hi Lance, Eroica is a vintage bicycle ride that started in Italy and is being held in SA for the first time in Monatgu on 23rd of April. Check out the web site <http://eroicasouthafrica.com/>
  17. Hi Olffie, That jersey would be perfect for Eroica Can you send me the contact details so I can order one? Can they make a cap as well you think? Thanks, Barry
  18. I posted this on the FaceBook page but there seems to be more action here so I am re-posting. This is my Eroica bike, a fantastic early 80's South African LeJeune made by the legendary Francois du Toit. The Reynolds 531 frame is in beautiful condition for it's age and could really do with the ultimate finishing touch of a lovely Brooks L’Eroica Tuscany Team Professional saddle and matching bar tape. It would really help this heroic bike to proudly showcase South African frame building, craftsmanship and cycling history at the first Eroica South Africa in Montague. This bike is not going to be just a show piece and will go on to the tackle the Tour of Ara as my new tour bike later in the year. #eroicabrooks337
  19. Thanks Kamaalo but it was pretty much as is, thanks to Nils at Woodstock Cycleworks, all I did was stem, bars, non-aero brakes and changed the crank.
  20. Hi Guys, My Eroica bike is almost done, all I need now is some appropriate kit. I am looking for anything branded Lejeune, jersey, caps or whatever. I also need some old school cycling shoes size 41. If anybody has something they want to sell please PM me. Thanks, Barry The bike is early 80s, 531 tubing with some 600 Arabesque RD, FD and shifters so still hoping to find cranks brakes and levers but that is not easy in SA
  21. Thanks Loose cog, that makes sense.
  22. Wow, thanks for the history quintonb, I see the angel now it's a great story. It really is a beautiful frame and the paint job is deluxe, and the decals are deep in the clear coat. Mine is 56cm seat tube and 56cm top tube so must have been a custom build as Morph mentioned. Barry
  23. Thanks Loose cog, There is a number on the bb, no idea what it might mean. The number 56 by itself above: BL 146 531 D6 as far as I can make out. Barry
  24. Thanks Morph, It has gone through a least 2 owners since then, the guy I bought it from and the person he bought it from who's Argus Cycle Tour stickers were still on it When do you think he had it made?
  25. Hi Retro Hubbers, I bought a South African made De'Lange and am trying to find out more info than I could get off the web. It has a Reynolds 531 frame and Reynolds 708 fork which seems unusual. The bike is quite rusted stored outside, but has a really cool 80's style paint job and when `I removed a sticker on the top tube I discovered a decal with the name Trevor Styles. I don't know if this is a personal bike or a model name? Any ideas? I would like to date it as well, I am thinking late 80's early 90's. Any info or speculation would be great. Barry
