  1. Hey Guys Is anyone going to do the Rietvlei night ride tonight?? Starts at 18:00 until about 20:00... Should be a few people there, the more the better
  2. Guys - the trails are awesome - if you're in the JHB area you should definitly make it a must ride in the very near future... And after the rains it will be even better. The night riding is also great fun - it's amazing how much stronger & better your ability seems when you can't see everything you're riding over
  3. If you do the maths... They say on the walkerville mtb race website that they have in excess of 1700 riders. Lets say for 1700 riders they charge R130.00 ea This totals R221 000.00 One of the farms they go through is owned by someone I know and they don't get paid for the access. At the most they get offered 2 free entries (when I tried to get my hands on one of these last year nothing materialised.) I can understand the need to pay the guys working for the day and also make a profit. If they pay 40 people R500 per day that is R20 000.00 and you pay the trail builders R20 000.00 (thumb suck)... Maybe they pay the venue R25000.00 for the day? Why are more of us not organising races????? The profit seems huge - unless I'm missing something...???
  4. The racing tonight was good fun - I can just about feel my toes again-it was pretty cold out there!!
  5. Hey guys I did the last two night rides & they were awesome... The group is split into ability so it is good riding for everyone...Also good to get an idea of the routes before the racing starts
  6. Sad news guys... I was riding home at about 17:30, crossing Klipriver & Swaartkoppies in JHB south. I came across an accident where a roadie had just been hit by a truck. The paramedics were there, but he didn't make it. I didn't go to close to the scene, all I can say is he was a roadie, probably 35-45. My sincere condolences go out to his family...
  7. I don't buy at Cajees - will never buy at Cajees... I just wanted to hopefully prevent others from being ripped off. And why should you have to haggle for a better price - if they are overcharging unsuspecting customers who don't know better, then those of us who do shouldn't support them purely based on principle...
  8. Cajees cycles in Fourways are asking R750-00 for a Conti Race King 2.2 UST... CW has them for R450-00 + postage Westdene has them for R450-00 The sad thing is that people obviously pay the price at Cajees without realising the ridiculous markup...
  9. I had the same problem with my eggbeaters... The creaking did go away when the whole eggbeater part stripped off the spindle though I had serviced them twice already so I put it down to rider abuse
  10. I've just put my new carbon handle bar on my bike & when I tighten the bar ends with the torque wrench (to 5Nm) they still swivel when under a medium amount of pressure. I don't want to over tighten the bolts as this might crack the bar... Any suggestions???
  11. Good morning everyone Could anyone give me an indication of what a decent asking price would be for the following entry level road bike...? Giant OCR1 frame (medium)(almost new-ridden 3 times) Tiagra groupset (used, but in good condition) Mavic open sport wheels, 105 hubs. Going to sell it, just want to ask a fair price...
  12. MuXmAn - Note the sarcastic 'Not' after the insurance comment... Why would they worry when they know that nothing will be done in any way to reprimand/punish them for their negligence
  13. So yesterday I was driving down the road-minding my own business...when some idiot taxi drivers whole wheel comes off the vehicle and hits my car!!! I was shocked when he told me he had no insurance...Not!! The taxi was full, no one got hurt. But when I asked the passangers why they weren't beating the crap out of the driver they looked at me like I was mad. Oh, and I get to pay the excess on my car - R3000. The quote from the panel beater came to R52000.
  14. Everyone says we should do something, so lets get talking about ways to actually do something to make the routes safer instead of always venting (with good reason) our frustration. If we just carry on posting comments and expect something to be done by someone else, we are never going to sort the problem out... For example: A couple months ago I saw police cyclists on the spruit on two consecutive weekends, since then I have not seen them again. (I would be happy to ride with them for a couple hours on a weekend to increase their numbers)
  15. Can't wait for 11...that's when I'm leaving for Sabie --YAY!!!
  16. What is also nonsense is when it's single track and some plonker approaching you thinks he doesn't have to yeild the path (common place on the spruit) or you yeild the path to your left & they yeild to their right--coming straight towards you... It's not rocket science!!!
  17. About 2 years ago I also emailed a similiar suggestion to Virgin Active... All I got was the stock standard answer - "We'll look into it." You'd think it would be better for them as... 1. It would reduce the traffic getting in & out of the club. 2. It goes with their healthy/active image if members cycle to gym.
  18. Hey guys I'm a MTB rider, but was told on Saturday that I'm doing the 94.7 road race... Now, I haven't ridden my road bike more than 3 times this year & I've never ridden in a bunch... Would it be better to do the race on my MTB or Road bike? I have shoe's & cleats on both...

    Wheels

Good afternoon everyone... Can anyone tell me where in the grand scheme of things where my MTB wheels would be ranked, and what would the next upgrade be for them & at what cost? They have been converted to tubeless. WTB SpeedDisc Aluminium Alloy 19-559 / 537 ERD.
  20. This is a statement taken from Bikeradar.com's review on the GT avalanche pro... Now here's an oddity, a cross-country race bike that has evolved into a hard-hitting all mountain hardtail. The Avalanche Pro wasn't designed from the outset for extreme XC, but has gradually morphed into a long travel machine built for high speed technical trails. They say it is deisgned for a long travel fork of max. 130mm The guys at the bike shop were shocked when they read the review, they hadn't heard of another bike with the same specs... So at least I don't have to worry about anything breaking. And SteveS will be happy nothing is going to change - all records are made to be broken Thanks to everyone for their opinions & advice!!
  21. Wow - thanks so much for all the advice... I will get the bike back tonight & take it for a second opinion. It's definitly going to be more costly if I wipe out and do a face plant-so I must do something... I'll try upload a picture in the morning & also double check which model it is. The other problem I've had since I've been riding this bike is that everytime I jump something I seem to be taking off at an angle- which isn't too bad until I have to land...Much to the delight of my fellow riders...I have had one nasty fall because of this. Could this be related to the fork, as it never used to happen with my last bike, or must I just brush up on my basics? <?: prefix = v ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" /> <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
  22. Good morning I need a bit of advice from the technical guru's... I sent my recently aquired second hand hardtail in for a service and the technician said that the shock that is currently on my bike is wrong for the bike. It's a 130mm travel fork (REBA RECON) - where it should be 100mm. They said that it will eventually cause problems & possibly break. The bike did feel a bit difficult to handle when I first rode it, but I thought that was just me getting used to it. The frame is : GT Avalanche Pro Triple triangle design 6061 superlite butted hardtailframe with hydroformed tubeset : Size M My questions are: 1. Do I let them modify the shock down to 100mm travel - cost +/- R500 2. Do I sell the shock I have now & add money in for a new shock. 3. Do I carry on riding the bike as is. Your words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated...
