  1. ha ha ... best i don't weigh Karen's TRc then ... small frame & with a lighter build kit - full XX w Chris King/355s and T40 bars & stem. i do hear sub 11? g
  2. my Santa Cruz Blur TRc is roughly 11 - 11.5 kg on the bathroom scale - give or take. definitely under 12. need a more accurate scale - one where my gut hasn't stretched the spring! Fox Float150 tuned to 140 RP23 SRAM XO 2x10 740mm Boobars w 70mm AKA stem Stans arch rims Chris King hubs Conti rubber queen & race king combo Rock Shox Reverb xt trail pedals
  3. i've ridden shovas in various forms since 2003 ... i had 3 and loved them all. setup kinda dictates riding - but with a nice float 140 it could handle way more than most bikes of that travel range if you want to smash out drops or are a heavier rider the mbuzi setup light(ish) would be a good option too. but as for "one bike to rule them all" the shova is very close to perfect - light enough for all day epics, strong enough to race your mates to the bottom! cheers g
  4. double fracture of olecranon - 1 horizontal, 1 vertical ... 7 screws and a 1 plate later! 2 months in sling, then 5 months with about 10 deg movement. plate and screws removed 8 months later i think it was ... full mobility now after lots of hard NHS physio on the UK. full range of movement now .. plus, as an added bonus, i still have the screws and plate in case i do it again. get the right orthopaedic surgeon if you have a choice and dont skimp on the physio and recovery exercises. g
  5. great team intro for 2011 Giant Factory racing team .. with SA's own Andrew Neethling on the team for 2011 g
  6. rode 750s on Shova for a while now - nice for turns and grip - but not so hot in tight trees - and even worse on night rides! So back to 710s on the Nomad - i think somewhere in between is best for me. g
  7. Hi all i've had the privilege of riding a wide variety of trails around the world - moab, seven stanes, portes de soleil, italy, alps etc .. and i feel i need to add input to this. the imba rule of riders going up having right of way does work in places where imba has a dedicated following - i've seen it in action in colorado and utah. but in SA the mountain bike scene has an extraordinary proportion of novices who haven't heard of rules of the trail let alone imba. i've found the trails that work best are the graded one direction trails - like porcupine rim, any of the seven stanes - where you select your grade: red, green, blue, black what have you and then ride it to your hearts content knowing full well that when you jump off a drop or jump or pin it round a switchback you wont be hurtling headlong into a group with heads down pounding on the granny gear trying to get over some roots. you can link loops to make the ride shorter, longer, harder, easier depending on the location .. but in essence you are going one way down tracks. the other thing from a trailbuilder's perspective is the trails at tokai are essentially a compromise so that people can go both up and down on the same track. our bikes are so much more capable these days that we don't have to ride up a fireroad to access singletrack - thats for the 29ers. i think with the tree felling going on in tokai, the ever increasing numbers of saturday riders, that this is the perfect chance to build and amend trails that are a whole series of one-way loops with grades and built for their direction and nature. just my 2c g
  8. thanks folks .. for world cup stuff the address is http://www.vitalmtb.com/ cheers gary
  9. yep .. have been official race photog since the epic started
  10. hi folks thanks for notes ... the image has been cover on a number of mags - BikeVista in Brazil, O2 Bikers in Belgium and a couple of others. Epic paid for chopper ... tough to put avgas on expenses these days. laters g
