  1. Grinder: look at G-iota df64 or Eureka specialta.
  2. Might be a bit out for you, but molykote 111 is really great http://www.molykote.co.za/Molykote-Contact.html
  3. Suggestion at your price point - don't go for an automatic machine. The Rancillio is good but single boiler. If you doing milk based drinks consider a HX (Heat Exchange) machine. Dual boilers will be above your price point (unless you looking for second hand) Have a look at the Lelit Mara, Nuova Simonelli oscar and other machines as well. Nice to have features to also look out for is PID, E61 group head, pump type (although rotary pumps might be a bit out of your budget). Places to look at as a starting point - onlinecoffeeshop, capecoffeebeans, Koldserve, Morrico, Cafe Izzo etc in time to come seriously consider an upgraded grinder, buy the best you can afford, Look into Niche Zero (if you can source), Eureka Mignon (or the soon to be released eureka single dose grinders), Coffee Essentials Single Dose etc.
  4. Are you fixated on the above or open to other suggestions as well? What type drinks do you mainly drink, espresso or milk based? At your budget you could get much better imho.
  5. Have not but looks very fishy Vat and Co Registration numbers return to a company in JHB (VAT IT Processing, which is unrelated).Tel number returns a few different companies at different addresses which also seems scams.Street maps returns Windermere shopping centre who doesn't have this company listed in their store directory.Fax number returns PRASA head office!!!VP-EQUIP PTY LTD Reviews | Contact VP-EQUIP PTY LTD - Consumer Goods - 0 TrustIndex | Hellopeter.com
  6. Equipment cafe (Koldserve) in Randburg Coffee unplugged in Wynberg
  7. Nice!!! FYI: Some good 3d print designs mods for the Specialata here: Eureka Mignon single-dose hopper and bellows by rmanalan - Thingiverse Eureka Mignon Perfetto/Specialita/Silenzio Coffee Grinder Tray by eric_chu - Thingiverse 58mm espresso machine portafilter wall holder rack by jimhigson - Thingiverse
  8. I don't mind starting off with a R350 coffee machine. Personally prefer using most coffee that is less than 2 weeks old from roasting (obviously only used from a day or two after roasting)
  9. Yeah, so I've heard. Issue is accessibility to "fresh" coffee beans. Finding a good roaster nearby who is truthfully willing to disclose actual date of roasting is becoming uncommon.
  10. Does anyone roast their own coffee? Want to start but not sure what works well
  11. Ever since Royal coffee relocated, I have been trying to find a nearby place with fresh and consistent roasting, any tips for good roasters close to the Woodmead area? Would prefer walk in as opposed to online. Any reviews on coffee unplugged or blue bean roastery?
  12. Fedex, UPS and DHL all ok Stay away from Aramex, TNT (exhorbitant clearing fees) and obviously SAPO Current delays at customs is about 4-6 days.
  13. Tried a host of Kitchen scales and also had very inconsistent results, also needed something that fits onto the Coffee machine tray. Happy with my Felicita (Acaia knock off) very accurate and fits well.
  14. Steps after grinding should be 1. Blindshake (your method should work, can also use a cocktail/toothpick stick to swirl/mix further) 2. Level. the link you provide for the 58mm will work for this, this has a tamper too. I bought a 58mm levelling tool (also known as knock off OCD tool) for around R500 from equipment cafe in Randburg JHB, their online presence sucks but they supply most coffee places, i think they ship too. Can also check with Baristas friend (allcoverred (at) gmail.com ) 3, Tamp using consistent pressure at 90 degrees (hand to elbow straight in line with tamper). consistency is key here. Finish with polish, one spin should be ok. IMHO precision screens and baskets do make a difference, but everything else also needs to be configured for that. Competition baskets vary with most around 58.5mm etc, so your tamper needs to be precision as well, although this is not critical. Locally these baskets are priced ridiculously, can look at the La Marzocco baskets made by VST (Cape coffee), these are not bad. Precision scales make a huge difference if you want to weigh beans/grind as well as brew correctly. The Felicita arc (based on the Acaia Lunar) is probably your most economical option.
