  1. Man, was that fun or what? And the hospitality in the town, was amazing. Thank you John and Arno and everyone else. The 171km bit was unnecessary, my legs are still telling me, but we would do it again tomorrow, right? Loved the roadie start (my riding buddies allowed me to have some fun, and wait for them later). Climbing up through the mist, having waved the racing snakes good bye and at a pace that was sensible, was lovely. Meiringspoort by bike is just too beautiful, after years of driving it and dreaming. Muragie road - what a joy to ride it during the day, and up, not blinking dusky dust at silly speeds with small lights. The tar climb to Kobus se Gat: the devil's work. Knowing the main Swartberg climb was a life-saver - the difference between the viewpoint that looks like the top (and has to be, surely!) and Die Top is an alarming 3km, for the uninitiated. And yet, the sense of humour failure rate was so low. Gravel bikers are lekker people, Lekker. The descent into town was worth every shred of kneecap-restructuring on the way up. The beers at the finish: nectar. My highlight? I got my whole table at our Friday night carboload to Google what a Prince Albert is. Mighty proud of that. It may have affected the dessert order, though. See you all next year.

  3. Main Road Wynberg is scary enough hanging onto the UCT whippersnappers on a normal bike, thank you.
  4. Which category would gravel bikes qualify for?
  5. 90 days in... how's it going, y'all?
  6. Locked to a tree outside Cavendish Square... gonna buy me a saw.
  7. Um.... No. No ambiguity, at all. Human-powered extra juice is called a tandem.
  8. And both of them finished second overall on normal bikes when they weren't aero-is-everything-ing.
  9. Lloyd won outright four times, Wimpie van der Merwe holds the any-course average speed record at 2:16.40 over 105km in 1993, 46km/h.
  10. Not to mention the top-tubers going from the top of Suikerbossie towards the 12 Apostles... if I tried that, there, today, I would have puckered my frame beyond warranty.
  11. Cavendish was in your group? But seriously - this indoor training malarky is wonderful, but it breeds cyborgs with qualifying FTPs but zero bunch riding skills. Or even solo riding skills. I stopped being tempted by the big bunch tow a while ago. Can't say I miss it.
  12. True story. And she moved to Bishopscourt. Also a true story.
  13. The major difference between 2009 and 2017 was the introduction of a new events act, which puts the calling off of the event in the hands of the JOC and the various emergency/safety institutions involved behind the scenes. There are pre-defined conditions which dictate how and when events become dangerous to participants, and once those thresholds have been reached, the decision is removed from the organiser, and made by the JOC (which makes the organiser do the announcement ). Had this set of regulations been in place in 2009 or 2010, we would not have ridden either, by all accounts. But, hey, conspiracy theories are more fun, right?
  14. Three months of changing dressings on arse, ankle and elbow every few days. My GP remembers it almost as fondly as I do...
  15. I found Bar Ones and bananas (I stopped at half a dozen) but that was five years ago. And I was quite tired. Maybe I was imagining
  16. Nope, 2:50 and then stop at the water points for snacks. That is the point of the second lap, and is the best part.
  17. You have to be back at the start at 9:40... it is 3.5km from the finish to the start, ten minutes at least. Make that a 2:50
  18. The timing tightness is due to the double-lappers needing to start with that last group... sure, you could do four hours, and do it again, but they can't keep the first quarter of the route closed for an extra hour or more waiting for you to finish the first one. It needs to fit in with the current setup, without putting any extra strain on traffic, road closures etc.
