  1. No that's the way they are designed - better grip in the mud. Same principle as octopus suckers.
  2. 3 min intervaals are too short. Ideally you want to build up your "threshold power" or whatver of the many names it goes by. That will give you the best all round improvement. It is defined by the power that you can ouput for 1 hour. The more you train your body at that level the better your all round performance. Later you can look at the short intervals. The best thing for you to do right now is the 1 hour steady rate. But be warned it is not easy. Your mind will scream at you "to get a life" after 30 minutes. Your legs will be screaming at you after 40 mins if you are doing it right. You could also break it into 20 min sessions but then you need to have some means of measuring your efforts. Basically suffer for an hour at a pace you can maintain fro 59 minutes.
  3. where offshore, diamond mining?
  4. AA, weight training won't help. Spinning will. Cycling is limited mainy by cardio vascular fitness. If you can set the resistance on your spinning bike then do that to give yourself variety. You don't need a program yet. Just go as hard as you can for an hour every 3rd day with evry other day being an easy spin. By as "hard as you can for an hour" I mean 15min warm up, one hour at a steady pace which should leave you ready to fall off at the end of the hour, followed by 15min warm down. You should try to finish at the same pace as you started, that is don't start too hard. You will be short of the longer rides but this is the best you can do under your circumstances.
  5. Maybe I'm just being cynical this morning but I'm not sure that this is kind at all. They've exposed this kid to a lifestyle that he will now constantly yearn for but is very unlikely to have any chance of attaining ... unless of course, he becomes a pirate. The goodies in his baggage will hardly make it through the airport at Mogadishu, if at all. His bike will last about 6 months and who will service & repair his prosthesis? Sure the individuals involved were probably trying to do good but the money and efforts would have probably been better spent towards (raising) funding for a USAID run clinic in his home town. But then again these Americans are just evil bastards looking to take over the world and the clinic would have been bombed by Al Queada or some warlord loonies within weeks. Remember "Black Hawk down"? Windbreaker2010-02-24 01:35:28
  6. I think that we should first get roads without potholes
  7. Try this link http://goldencheetah.org/GoldenCheetah_1.3.0_Windows_Installer.exe They had a problem with the zipping and it might have been down while they were sorting it out.
  8. New release 1.3 Has 3d plotting and many other features. The Linux download is actually a zip archive. Rename it with a zip extension when download complete. http://goldencheetah.org/download.html
  9. The wheel is fitted right. I do the same - always re-tighten the skewer on the ground. I'll try the copperslip and if that doesn't work then is back to the shop.
  10. Enjoying it! It's my first MTB so I am a complete novice on that front. Still trying to work out how & wehn to use all the gadgets like lockouts and rebound adjusters etc. One thing I will say is that it is much heavier than what I'm used to.

  12. mmmm Silver Ones, with black stuff on them edit: to note that this comment was as a result of a computer hijack. can't trust a woman alone with a laptop Windbreaker2010-01-27 13:00:00
  13. Ok, cleaned the rotor with acetone - no alcohol available. I don't think that acetone leaves a residue. Took the shine off the pads with sandpaper, re-inserted the pads. Checked everything for any loose bits. I live on a hill. Got some speed up and applied the brakes hard - 5s on 10s off etc First 50m meters no noise but also not much stopping power. After 50m the vibration/squeal started and I had proper braking. Something I never mentioned before. I also changed out the wheel. The problem is on both the original wheel and the replacement so it can't be the rotor. (Both could have been contaminated). I don't hear any noise that I would link to a rubbing pad so I am quite sure that the pistons are releasing.
  14. Thanks BB, I'll try anything right now.
  15. So I got a brand new Merida 120 for Xmas from Santa (well via the darling wife anyway ) and on the second ride the rear brakes started to make a helluva noise. Took it back to the lbs. They took the shine off the pads, re-inserted and away I went - perfect. Well for one ride anyway then it was back to the same complaining noise every time I use them . The only time they don't squeal is when I really brake hard on tar. So they replaced the pads telling me that sometimes they get a "dud" or two. Yep, you guessed it, one ride later and back to square one. Now what? I've been told that I need to get this that or the other type of brake pads but I am not sure. Anyone? 16. So I assume that the 180mm rotors provide better stopping power in theory but is there a difference in reality?
  17. Yes it does put it into perspective' date=' if you read the replies you will see a lot of comments BY CYCLIST critical of the action of those riders, this however has not stopped you from lumping all cyclist into one large generalized group. [/quote']] and we still don't see a SINGLE condemnation of the actions of "Mr X" by the cradle residents. For me that puts it all into perspective. They want nothing less than the removal of cyclist from "THEIR" roads. Nothing reasonable in that.Windbreaker2010-01-17 13:34:14
  18. appycyclist, I notice that you are new to the hub so you get the benefit of the doubt but do yourself a favour and read the gazillions of other threads about cyclist behaviour. I disagree that cyclists should be singled out as cyclist behaviour, ifyou take an obejective view is fairly representative of south africa road users generally - not very good. That is a separate topic. This thread is about the the actions of a certain individual who feels that he has the right to put cyclists life in danger. I am fairly sure that the death of a cyclist in Glencairn a couple of years ago was because of a similar action - buzzing. In that case the culprit misjudged because he was drunk. The point is that it is not just a harmless protest that this cradle resident is exercising HE PUT PEOPLES LIVES IN DANGER INTENTIONALLY. Nothing can justify that!
  19. mr ples, I am not following you. you obviously know this culprit well. call him up and ask for his side of the story. post it here if you like but don't keep doubting what has been posted here without making the effort to find out the "other" side when you can do it with no effort. as for supporting your commando/association whatever, I'm afraid that i don't agree with chucky. if you are associated with someone who so easilly puts peoples lives in jeopardy under some or other new crusade then you certainly will get no support from me. and as for you description of your buddies "good side" consider that adolf hitler thought that he was uplifting the german nation .... and he was also kind to his alsatian dog
