  1. That's your best route, I may also be starting a new job in Century City and that is the exact route I was eyeing. Coming from Rondebosch. Just watch out for muggers when the BRT route goes under the N1, it is a frequent occurance. I would advise riding with pepper spray and a jousting pole.
  2. Good morning all, just want to revive this thread a bit. I still cycle to work from Rondebosch via Woodstock. During summer I leave rather early, before 6 usually. But now in the winter I leave at about 6:50, anyone is welcome to join me. Just PM me and we can sort out the details. Let's try and get more cars off the road people!
  3. I'm 1.71m and my saddle is ever so slightly higher than my handlebars. I changed from 29er to 650b last year and I feel way more comfortable and in control. I think for our height 29er is just too big. That being said, I am getting some wrist pains on longer rides these days, so I think I also need to either swap my stem, stop gripping so tightly or just strengthen my core.
  4. Simple answer? Cycling makes up less than 1% of the modal share on roads. Would you spend a scarce resource on an item that is less than 1% of your business?
  5. HI Baloo, I cycle to work from Rondebosch about 3 times per week (via woodstock) and I try to cycle via the mountain once per week. You are more than welcome to join me. PM me and I'll add you to our whatsapp group. But I usually go rather early, leaving at 5:45 usually.
  6. Exactly this. It depends if you want to commute to train or commute to, well, commute. If i commute I go via Woodstock and it takes 22min. If i train I'll go via the mountain and it takes 50min.
  7. Fantastic. I'll be starting my commute tomorrow. Spring in Cape Town apparently means wind and rain. Interestingly, there was a study done and (do not quote me on the figures) something like 50% of all trips in a car are less than 4km... now imagine all that done by bicycle.
  8. This is correct. They managed to get MetroFail to allow you to take your bike onto the train during off-peak hours. Taking it onto a train is not even that important, simple safe storage facilities at all stations will go such a long way. When I still stayed with my parents I used the train a few times, it is about 5km from their house, meaning my mom had to drop me off at the station. I would've gladly cycled there and then lock my bike up and get on the train. Easy, simple.
  9. All your thoughts make sense. I'll try to give opinion on all of them. - I require a car for work. I drive my car in to work on a Monday, with my bike on the back, then commute via bicycle for the next few days and then simply take my car back on a Friday. - You get saddle bags for that. - Children can also cycle, they dont need to be dropped off. These are the issues I think are most important: -Trip-end facilities, e.g. showers, safe bike storage, lockers. -Incentives from employers. -Policies to force developers to include bicycle parking -All new roads designed with cycling in mind -Enforcement to keep cycle lanes clear -Most importantly an attitude change. Private cars are not the future of transport. Driverless cars however...that's where it is at. Combined with cycling and public transport.
  10. mmm perhaps I missed those. I do not cycle the entire way on the cycle lane, so it is probably on the sections I never ride. It is frustrating indeed, but until more people cycle to work, we need to accept that cars/busses take priority in transport planning. I think everyone just need to be super arragont about how awesome cycling to work is in the office. Rant to your colleagues about how you never have traffic, and how much time and money you save. Hopefully it catches on haha.
  11. Hi all I only got into cycling in December last year. I was really unfit in Jan2015 and decided to turn my life around (fitness wise). I couldnt even run 2km without stopping and feeling nausious. I started running too much too fast, fell in love with it and within about 6 months I realised that my knees are not made for running. I had a series of ankle, ITB injuries. I decided to take a break from running and cycle instead. Borrowed a bike from my girlfriend and started riding. 2 months later I bought a bike and (fast foword to now) in 4 days' time I am doing the Karoo to Coast. Needless to say I fell in love with cycling. I am an avid commuter as well and would love to see Cape Town become the next Amsterdam or Copenhagen with regards to cycling.
  12. Exactly. Nothing gets enforced, and when it does it is probably just because some irritating cyclists were complaining. We have bread a society of mediocrity and lawlessness. Everytime I hear someone say "but you can't compare us against USA/Australia/Netherlands" I get irritated. Why not?! How can you ever be the best if you dont compete against the best. Competing against Zimbabwe and winning isn't exactly something to be proud of.
  13. I cycle there almost everyday. The sections where it is black is due to bad communication in the City. A contractor comes along and reinstates an asphalt surface then they simply do not repaint the cycle way. As far as I know the cats eyes were removed at a few places where plenty of vehicles cross, but I might be wrong. The cycle way is a good initiative, but the problem in SA in general is this: NOTHING GETS ENFORCED. People simply do not respect rules, regulations and order. There is a social issue in our country that needs to change before any of these good ideas will ever work.
  14. It doesn't make it safe, but I do still feel that drivers at least are now more cognisent of a possible cyclist.
  15. This is my personal pet peeve. Something I would love to see changed at some point. The rule is the green for pedestrians/cyclists and simultaneous green for cars simply mean that the car needs to give way for pedestrians/cyclists if there are any. But NO-ONE does this. I honestly think there aren't many people who know this either. I tried walking around the City a few months ago by only using green pedestrian lights... it was catastrophic. Roads are designed for cars, not people, and herewith lies the problem in our society. We need to design roads for people, no matter your mode of transport. As a pedestrian it is safer to look at the traffic lights for cars to see if it is red compared to looking at the green light for pedestrians.
  16. So I've heard. Luckily I dide a MTB so I haven't had issues yet.
  17. Exactly the same on Liesbeek Parkway. I almost always see cyclist in the road when there is a perfectly constructed cycle way parallel to it. Probably too much of an inconvenience to get onto the cycle way.
  18. haha poor girl did that to me the other day, I think she got a bigger fright than me! Was also a close call. What amazes me is how people drive in front of you from a side street and then look at you (going straight) like you are in the wrong!
  19. Hi KK I'd definitely want to join you guys next week some time. I usually cycle via Liesbeek Parkway, but if I can do one over the mountain once a week I'd be happy. Do you guys do it everyday?
  20. Preferably road, haha. But every now and then I might tackle the mountain if I want to exercise. My idea of commuting is just that, commuting, not training. Saving money on petrol and avoiding traffic. Awesome I'll check the page out!
  21. I'm very flexible, but depending on what time I get to work and of course my work load, my home time might vary. I will be starting to cycle to work from the 7th. Does the morning time suit you?
  22. Thanks DJR! Yeah really looking forward to it, although I read through the crime hotspot forum the other day it got me a bit worried haha. I'll be using the Liesbeek Parkway cycle lane, Albert Road Cycle lane and then I'm still deciding weather I should use the BRT cycle lane from the Lower Church street bridge, or just go over Christiaan Barnard bridge with the cars. I work in the Civic Centre.
  23. Hi all. Is anyone riding from Rondebosch/Newlands to CBD? I am looking at riding at about 07:00 to the CBD and then back at about 16:00.
  24. Guys I am planning on cycling from Rondebosch to CBD starting March. Can you perhaps assist me with some tips and routes to avoid? Also, are there any cycling groups available?
  25. I'm starting my first commute on 7 March after moving to Rondebosch. Is there anybody who cycles from Rondebosch area to the CBD?
