  1. From Wikipedia: - Johan van der Velde of the Netherlands undertook hospital treatment for his addiction to amphetamines at the end of his career. He said in an interview with the author Jan Siebelink ("Pijn is genot") that he had trouble coping when that success began to dry up. Van der Velde said he remembered shivering at the start of an Italian race, the skin of his arms wrinkled in goosebumps, because of the amphetamine he had taken just to start. He was also disqualified from the 1981 Liège–Bastogne–Liège race.
  2. Cycling aside, be wary of your comment. Have YOU ever been accused and found guilty on these grounds whilst knowing your are innocent! It is not a pleasant experience.
  3. A Witch. What did you see?
  4. LeTurbo From your signature: 'I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.' An upshot from this: 'When people agree with me I know I must be wrong.'
  5. Sorry. I meant: '. . . . less expensive lights for the same LUMENS.'
  6. Exposure Maxx D. I bought them in 2010 from Tour de Frans at R4500 each. The lights cost me 13 times than the bike (before the new paint job). I am sure that you can, these days, find less expensive lights for the same price. Johan
  7. This was posted in gest, of course. I used these lights on my mountain bike in a 24 hour race. Fellow competitors complained that when I caught up with them the lights were so bright (900 lumens each) that the shadow cast by their body was so dark that they could not see where they were going until I passed. A bit of excess has never hurt anybody. Brakes? My signature indicates my opinion on this matter: 'I don't give a damn for a person that stares at a red traffic light when it is perfectly safe to proceed.' (I have one brake (fixie) on the bike but I don't want to spoil the minimalism of the bike.) You're welcome to flame me now! Regards. Johan
  8. I am extremely safety conscious. I'll be participating the the Johannesburg Critical Mass ride tomorrow evening and I need opinions on whether I have sufficient lights on my bike. Attached is a picture showing the 2 Exposure Maxx D lights that I fitted to my recently restored bike. I am also contemplating fitting a light to my helmet. What do you think?
  9. Loco I nearly said I'll see you there then I saw you are from Jeffreys. I'll be at Critical Mass in Johannesburg.
  10. In the end it turned out NOT to be Cinelli. The frame, after stripping, revealed the words "Super Vitus" . So here it is complete with toe clips and all! The one thing missing is the frame stickers that I ordered. But for now it is ready for a test drive.
  11. Their number is 011 397 8181. I suggest you ask them directly.
  12. Whilst doing my trolling in pawn shops I came across this bike. Maybe someone would be interested in this vintage bike as a resoration project. I am in the process of restoring a fixie so I have to let this one pass. The price from the shop is R1500 for the frame as is. The shop is called 24 Hour Pawn and they are at 53 Kelly Road, Jet Park, Kempton Park (I have no financial interest at the shop - this is merely an alert for someone that might be intrested.)
  13. So, it seems as if the price was not too bad!
  14. Maybe he should stick to wheelies and floating bridges. Leave the road for us whimps!
  15. Have I bought a treasure or a lemon? OVERVIEW The frame is badly painted and some of the detail is clearly painted by hand. The frame seems to be steel and regrettably not a Titanium frame. The size of the bike is a 57-58. I have weighed the bike in an ‘as is’ condition and it weighs a round 8kg. THE BARS are inscribed with the Olympic rings and the word “COMPITIZIONE”. On the one side there is a logo showing the ‘3 ttt’ logo encircled by a wreath. FRONT FORK. From images on the net I could see it is a Cenelli fork. WHEELS AND TYRES. The rims are Mavic GEL 280 tubbys and the words ‘Campagnolo Record’ appear on the hubs. SADDLE is a ‘San Marco Rolls’. CRANK SET is Sugino I bought the bike from Cash Converters. I’ll reveal the price I paid in the near future. Of course, my biggest concern is what the value of the bike is. If it is not an absolute treasure I will restore the bike to pristine condition and use it as a single speed commuter.
  16. At the Renoster MTB race in the Western Cape this weekend at the end of day two I managed to take a picture of one on the front runners. I have no further details about the rider. I think it hurt.
  17. Ma Baker is not going to be pleased.
  18. Cav. After yesterday's victory in Stage 2 I thought you would have something else to say.
  19. Geecee, I am impressed by your train of thought. I like it if I am questioned. It makes me think. With you I can have a sensible debate without finding myself in an opposite corner being seen as a freak. For what it is worth I went to the US Environmental Protection Agency website http://www.epa.gov/ and did a search on 'Vegetarianism'. Many page of supporting information appeared. (For some, of course, the research done by ANY government agency is by implication flawed - especially the USA gov.) I nevertheless found the material of interest and I hope you do too. In no way is it my intent to try to convince anyone to become a vegetarian. Like religion (I belong to a non-prophit organisation - being a non-theist) it is not my intent to convert anyone. We all have to make up our own minds as to how we live our lives without being too critical of how others decide. Keep well. Johan
  20. And your point is . . . . .?
  21. Slight off topic but: - The Impact of Animal Farming on global warming. The world is currently raising over 50 billion farmed animals for slaughter each year. This has a major impact on global warming. This is contributing significantly to the destruction of tropical rainforests and other valuable habitats. Because of its high degree of inefficiency compared to plant protein production, animal agriculture is disproportionately depleting the planet’s dwindling reserves of fresh water, land, fuel, and other resources,” say Tammy Kelly. (I think from Fry's) Here are some scientific facts: At least half of all the greenhouse gases are due to livestock production. If all Americans ate no meat, chicken or fish for just one day a week, this would result in the same carbon savings as taking 19,2 million cars off the road in the USA for an entire year. The equivalent saving would be 46 million return flights from New York to Los Angeles. It requires 500 times as much land to produce 1kg of beef as it does to produce 1kg of vegetables. It takes 250 litres of water to produce 1kg of wheat, and 25 000 litres of water to produce 1kg of meat. Cows, pigs and sheep bread for human consumption discharge millions of tons of methane, a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Livestock accounts for about 18% of greenhouse gases, more than all the world’s transportation systems including cars. Vegetarians unite - one day we'll rule the world.
