  1. I am looking for a new dual suspension mountain bike to buy, around 8-9 000 Rand, and am not sure what to buy. I want a good bike, with good parts that I can use for jumping and offroading alike. I have looked around, but am having trouble finding anything. If you want to suggest nything, or if you have a bike to sell, then message me.
  2. I'm looking to buy a dual suspension MTB bike, my budget is around 30-40k mark. Could I get some advise on which bike will be the best bang for buck as I am quite new to the sport. I'm not a serious racer and just ride for fun, but looking for something that can do everything. Thanks in advance!
  3. Hi all. Ive decided to buy a mountain bike for fitness but need some help . Im 194 cm , 120 odd kgs , 39 years old. Mostly want to cycle around farm roads and coastal forests on the KZN North Coast. I dont really know what to look out for , but know that I dont want to buy something heavy which I am not going to enjoy . What should I be looking at getting into this. I realise budget is as long as a piece of string but what should I be looking at if I am just starting off , want something relatively affordable, but dont want something heavy and crap which is going to put me off? Appreciate any advice
  4. I found this bike, and on my other forums they said that it was hard to find a good dual suspension for under 25k, but this looks really good! Just asking if it would be worth buying??? https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/dual-suspension-bikes/662459/titan-skyrim-trail-plus
  5. Hi I’m buying a bike in EL from a seller who doesn’t know how to box etc. any LBS recommendations who can box and I’ll pay for boxing and courier. Thanks 0618488324
  6. I am selling a bike on Bikehub (Merida 1-20 Comp 900D (2012) | Dual Suspension Mountain Bikes | Bike Hub) and I put it for 8k, but I am not sure if people will buy it for that price. It is in good condition, and a very good bike.
  7. Hi Guys, New here, want to sell a bike I got as a gift last year. I have never driven it so everything is brand new. No idea what it's worth, can anyone give me an idea? Pictures attached bellow.
  8. Dear all , I'm looking at buying this model mountain bike and would like your thoughts on this bike and if you ride one yourself, please be in contact. Specs of the bike: * SRAM GX Groupset * SRAM Guide RS Brakeset * FOX Step Cast 34 120mm fork * Rockshox Micro Brain Rear * Roval Control Carbon Wheelset Would like to know riding style, as I'm used be riding S-Works Epic 3 years back and felt way to aggressive for me and hard as hell. Your opinions will be much appreciated!
  9. Hi all. I am new to the cycling game and just purchased a SignalS930. I wanted to find out what vehicle carrier I should look at? are all carriers versatile? any suggestions? thanks
  10. Hi everyone, I'm in dire need of advice please. I'm going to be doing my very first sprint triathlon (20km cycle leg) in a few months time. I currently do not own a bike. I have a R5k budget to buy a bicycle to train with and use on race day. I realize that it is not a lot of money, but I'm not yet sure whether I'll be seriously getting into this as a sport or not. Additionally I'll still have to buy the ancillary biking equipment eg: helmet, bike rack, water bottle cages, etc..... As a result my current thinking is to just get an entry level hardtail mountain bike (29 inch wheels) and just use that, stock standard? I've found the following bike advertised: https://cwcycles.co.za/product/1018157-bike-mtb-ht-alu-avalanche-reflex-2. Is this a worthwhile buy for my needs? If I don't take to the sport, then I just have a cheap bike for recreational use? If I do, then I'll just resell and spend a bit more? I'm very cautious about buying second hand, as I know next to nothing about bikes and wouldn't be able to tell if I'm buying a dud or not. I'm 1,7m tall and weigh 80kg. Am I setting myself up for failure? All advice welcome. Thanks in advance!
  11. Good morning all! Traveling to USA for some racing:D I wanted to find out if anybody has experience travelling with a bike with British Airways. For some reason when I ask them on the customer service line they aren't much help ... From what I've read, to not have to pay an extra fee, BA expects my luggage and bike bag to weigh under 23kg to not be penalized? I was always under the impression it's 32kg. But now I am not exactly sure... If need be I will obviously have to pay extra. However I don't want to pack so light to hit the weight limit, just to find out that I could have had an extra 10kg of luggage.. Thanks everyone! Mike
  12. As has been noted on your other thread, this bike is a Large, if you are 1.55m tall, this bike will not work for you, so discard the idea. If I were you, I'd give some consideration to this: https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/dual-suspension-bikes/713853/merida-one-twenty-7600-slx-rockshox A bit more expensive than you intended, but the size is right, decent components and it does not look like it has been hammered. Tubeless conversion done, recently serviced. Decent components (yes, only 10 speed, but the SLX drivetrain will serve you well). It has a clutch derailleur, the first "upgrade" I would make would be to get rid of the front derailleur, put on a 32 tooth Narrow Wide chainring from Rapide, and then save for a dropper from Lyne. Ride it until your skill level dictates that you need more bike, by that time your circumstances may have changed and you'll probably have a better idea of what kind of riding you prefer.
  13. Hi everyone, Going to be flying into Milan, Italy and, for obvious reasons, am looking to do some road cycling in that region. Currently trying to figure out whether it makes more sense to rent a bike box and take my own bike, or look to rent a bike locally. I have never flown with a bike before and do not own a bike box. I know there are some Scicon Aerocomfort bike bags available for rent in Cape Town. Appealing given the minimal disassembly required, but am wondering if the lack of a hard shell would place my bike at risk. Any suggestions and/or views regarding travelling abroad with a bike bag/box? Alternatively, anyone perhaps have any leads on decent bike rentals in or around Milan? I've had a Google, but a suggestion based on a good experience would be preferable. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

  15. I'd love to know too, maybe if Matt allowed comments on the classifieds, we could ask the seller... At the OP (@mspalk), I understand that you are trying to find the best deal for your first bike, but multiple threads asking for advice is not going to make the decision any easier. this may be a decent buy, but another has noted, a Large frame will not work for you if you require a Small bike. Establish the size that you need, work out what you can afford to buy, and then take it from there. And remember, leave some money in your budget for a helmet and other bits and pieces that will make the journey that much better.
  16. Looks great, is it lightweight though? My current bike is quite heavy, and that really stops me from doing jumps etc.
  17. I have decided to buy a new titanium road bike and have identified two bikes of interest. the bike will be bought in the UK and someone will bring it in March. The bikes are the Ribble Endurance Ti Disc Sport - https://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/ribble-endurance-ti-disc-105-r7100/ And the Holdsworth Helm - https://www.planetx.co.uk/products/holdsworth-helm-sram-force-22-titanium-road-bike. Both bikes cost the same - £1,999 (ZAR 48,000) (The Holdsworth shows the price as £1,659, but when you add UK VAT it is £1,999) The Ribble comes with Shimano 105 2x12 (50/34) and a Mavic Aksium 19 wheelset (heavy at around 1850 grams). The Holdsworth comes with SRAM Force 2x11 (50/34) and a Vision Team 30 wheelset (heavy at around 1900 grams). Except for the different wheelsets, groupsets and seat stays there is little to choose from. Which one of the two will you choose and why?
  18. First thing is to go and visit as many bike shops as you can to hear their opinions on what you should get. Often you can pick up some good tips there. But beware of the fact that they will always offer you a bike from stock they presently have on the floor which might not always suit you 100%. Search the forums for good information that has already been given on BikeHub. Type in appropriate key words into the search box and spend a lot of time reading. Understand that cycling has become an expensive sport so select wisely the first time. At your height and weight it looks like you'll need an extra large bike and as long as you're not planning on riding lots of steep hills I wouldn't overly worry about the bike weight. If you were considering entering races in the future then you could start considering the weight aspect as being more important. A hardtail bike (only a shock absorbing fork upfront and no rear suspension) is probably the best choice for you as it's cheaper to buy and maintain. But many a rider have bought a hard tail and then a year or two later traded it in for a dual suspension as it gives a lot more comfort on the rougher terrain. You state farm and forest roads so a hard tail could be your best choice. Getting wider rims (upgrade) to accommodate bigger volume tyres will also help in giving you a much more comfortable ride. Also don't forget that purchasing other items like padded shorts, cycling shirts, gloves, helmet, pump, tubeless tyre upgrade, tyre repair kit and some basic tools are all costs you should also keep in mind. In the future a heart rate monitor with GPS tracking, cleated shoes, riding glasses (with optical inserts if you have prescription lenses) and then a good set of bike tools (shock pump & torque wrench) might be something to consider. So, consider all your options well before buying and seek out good advice from serious cyclists in your area. Bargains are not that easy to come across these days (post COVID times) but still possible on BikeHub but unfortunately the bargain bikes are sold very quickly and you've got to be quick on the uptake. Good luck on your cycling journey. Your love of cycling is about to begin...
  19. Titan Racing Cypher all the way! Also dont have to buy new since they come with 5 year multi user warranty. Ive seen a few titans in the 30k range with carbon wheels as well. (Obviously second hand.) Awesome bang for bike and a pleasant ride experience.
  20. So an entry level dual sus starts at R16999.99 like the Titan Cypher Sport RS or 120, when on sale. You can generally upgrade this to a 12spd drivetrain for R3000 - R4000. I think they're at R28999.99 now at all your big bike shops. Current cheapest option is the Silverback Stratos AL Elite MS from Cycle Lab, they have on promo for R24999.99 if you want something decent to get into. Decent Suntour suspension and even has UD dropouts so if you're really feeling adventurous, you can upgrade to a Sram Transmission drivetrain, but more importantly, hangers will be widely available at all most all bike stores. Decently spec'd bike and has 11spd Microshift which is actually quite decent, of course not comparable to a 12spd Deore or Sram SX, but it'll get the job done. Your cheapies that you'll find new for sub R15k will be your steel Raleighs, Totems, etc from your big box stores like Game and Makro. I can not recommend more to not buy this. It will put you off cycling for possibly your entire life. You will have a crappy time from the get go, and when you have problems, nobody in those stores will help you, because they dont know how to help you. Perhaps get a decent hardtail. Look at something with a 10spd Deore, like a Stride Deluxe. Or, if you're willing to spend R10k, look at the Marvel Prime that Cycle Lab currently has on promo. It has a Sram SX drivetrain with a Suntour air fork. I think the next closest bike with similar spec is at R18k. Plus you got the protection of dealing with a cycling specific store that has knowledgeable staff and will support and look after you. This of course goes for all cycling specific outlets, they're all super friendly and always willing to help.
  21. I suggest you try and find out if there are any cycling clubs or cycling groups that you can join in your area. Getting a bike and riding on your own is not the best idea for a number of reasons. ( Accidents, security, mechanical failures etc.) And if you are only going to be riding by yourself, it is my experience that it is quite easy to let yourself down. So find people to ride with. Then find out what bikes those people have. In the beginning you may not have the fitness to keep up. Don't worry, cyclists are a friendly bunch and won't mind waiting for you in the beginning. But you don't want to be unable to keep up because of lack of fitness compounded by an inappropriate bike. Your best option - and i know there are going to be howls of protest - may be to buy an e-bike. They are fun to ride and suitable for riding in groups with non e-bike riders on low power settings. You still get a very hard workout if that is what you want. As a beginner they are easier to ride than non e-bikes and they allow you to keep up with fitter riders. A reasonable e-bike is going to cost much more than R10 - 15 K but it is more likely to be well used and you may avoid buying more than once in a short time frame. Whatever you decide, I hope you enjoy the shopping experience and more so that you enjoy your new sport.
  22. Hi, I apologise if this is the incorrect place to post on this topic. I need some advice please. I bought a new 2023 Silverback Stride Sport on the 03-02-2024 from Cycle Lab in Lynnwood. Bike was marked down from R12,000 to R8,000. At the time, I thought it was a good deal. I am 49 years old, 85kg, plus bike and gear altogether is about 105kg. Well within the max total of 120kg. After about 32 days the freehub started slipping. Took me a week to diagnose and confirm the issue. Both hubs drone/squeak. Said freehub slips when in 7th, 8th gear on an incline pedalling hard. I ride the bike on dirt roads in and around Bashewa, Pretoria East. Nothing heavy. Took back to CL and I must say the staff were very helpful. Great team. I am awaiting a warranty replacement which is been done as we speak. There are freehub issues on this model, not sure if other Silverback models are affected for those thinking of buying. My main complaint however, is: the bike is advertised on their site with a certain spec. The bike I bought has a different spec. https://www.cyclelab.com/product/1017956-bike-mtb-ht-alu-slvback-stride-sport-my23 Bike is advertised as having: - SRAM chain (PYC chain supplied) - Shimano rotors (Tektro supplied, which is reasonable given the brakes are Tektro) - Shimano TX505 hubs (cannot see a name on FH or RH?) - chain guide (no chain guide supplied) Of all the things, the most upsetting is the hubs. I feel the supplied hubs are simply awful. Besides that, I feel it is false advertising and I have been cheated. I am going to ask Jaco, the store manager next week when I collect the bike, what, if anything can be done. What are my options? Am I over reacting? Do I file a complaint with the CPA? First speak with the store manager and take it from there? I am well aware that manufacturers and hence retailers cover themselves with the typical legal jargon of "specifications are subject to change without prior notice" and "images are for illustrative purposes only". Sigh. Thank you.
  23. Are those bikes a material upgrade to your old bike though? One thing I think its worth mentioning is that mtb geometry improved a lot over the last 10 years, I don't think trading in a 12 year old bike for a slightly better specced 12/10 year old bike is particularly good value for money. If you go second hand I would suggest not going further back than 2017 or thereabouts.
  24. Definetly too long but didn’t want to start taking out links and then the large chainring is too tight🤷🏼‍♂️.. maybe I’m pulling a noob move here and it’s a simple fix..😉🤘🏻 my previous chain was kmc and it wasn’t worn out(check my chain on the reg with that tool) but I felt its done well and wanted a new fresh one..🤣🤣 Thanks bud.. I’m going for a little cycle ina bit past broadacres so will pop in to mellow velo and ask them to tune it quick.. bought from them so shouldn’t be an issue or cost much if anything.. I’ll watch that video as well just for reference.. thanks chaps.!😃
  25. I’m looking for advice re gravel bike or rather repurposed road bikes that can handle jeep track and not-so-rough terrain. I can’t seem to search the Hub (see attached pic). Which brand of road bike can be modified with a gravel fork and some 750b wheels/ frame that can accommodate the gravel tyres required for a Race to the Sun type of event. I like Cannondale’s as a manufacturer own a two Evo’s, a CAAD 8 ( dedicated Zwift bike and candidate for modification BUT rear clearance can’t even do 28” tyres) and a 2016 Scalpel HM. At 2023 Race to the Sun I was dropped by everyone on a gravel bike as soon as we hit the tar and want to find a brand of bike that I can use as my gravel bike for 2024. I heard murmurs of an older model Specialized Roubaix circa 2012/3 will be fit for purpose. Which light <11kg road frame will get 32-34” (maybe 36”) rear tyre in? Which gravel fork can work well with such a hybrid? I will be fine with v brakes and not necessarily discs and am not fussed with Road or gravel components. We’ll just pray it doesn’t rain this year at 2024 Race to the Sun. I have lots of pretty smooth gravel roads where I live and does not need to be a gravel weapon. My budget is <R15 000.
