  1. Hi all I want to upgrade my bike from mech to hydraulic brakes. My budget is limited to about R1500. Which brakes should I buy? I’m not too concerned about ease of installation. I just want reliability and serviceability to be hassle free. I’ve looked at brakes such as Tektro and Shimano mt200, but I don’t know where to buy them. Thank you
  2. Hi Everyone I am thinking of building another wheel with a single speed free hub, any suggestions? Kind Regards Pieter
  3. Without starting this thread sounding like an offshore oil rig worker trying to sell his cousin's bike, I'll get right to the point: I need to decide what set of brakes to get for my MTB next. Background: I am built for going more downhill than up - around 100kg. My bike is a 150mm/130mm travel black mongrel weighing more than 14kg. I like the more technical stuff and not averse to my bike's tyres leaving contact with Mother Earth on occasion. I currently run Shimano XT M8000's on a 203mm front and 180mm rear rotor which give me reasonable stopping power but lacks modulation and brute force when it is really needed, and I feel holding me back a little in terms of confidence to push the boundaries a bit more. The shortlist at the moment contains: TRP Quadiem's Hope Tech3 E4's Formula Cura's and possibly TRP slate I'm not a big fan of SRAM brakes due to previous bad experiences therefore I won't consider these as an option for now. At the end of the day I'll need to way up performance, reliability, ease of getting spares, backup and repairs but also value for money, as there is a significant difference in price between some of the options on my list. I am not asking any of you to choose for me, but would appreciate if anybody with proper experience with any of the listed brake sets above to impart some of it to educate my eventual leap. Greatly appreciated!
  4. So as the title suggests am looking for some new boost wheels that will be light enough to pedal over distance but resilient enough to hand a few rock gardens and general trail riding. Weight and how they roll is as much a factor as I like to do distance as well as short fun stuff. The bike is boost which is another consideration. Actual boost hub's or the axle kit AC offer to make hub's boost compatible. Would rather not have boost but unfortunately the bike I wanted is. I can't see there is any perceivable difference between actual boost hub's and the axle conversion. Although some argue it's pointless having a boost bike and then just adjusting the spacing. I know in the real world I can't feel the difference . Have already ridden the bike with loan wheels that are boost hub's vs my wheels which are spaced . I will only be running 2.2 -2.3 rears and 2.3- 2.4 fronts if that has any bearing on my decision as the ac's are wide proper wide. Anyone who has ridden or owned either or both your input would be appreciated. As would anyone who wants to pass on some advice . Am leaning towards the smokin guns, what a freakin cool name . Oh and on a mid travel 9r Have put this out there instead of hassling MM ????????
  5. While I was installing a new cassette onto my Hope Pro 2 Evo Hub I accidentally pulled the freebody off the hub. I wasn't expecting to pull it off so easily, I was really just making sure the cassette was fastened properly. Anyhow, this may well have been a good thing as it allowed me to see just how dirty things are getting inside the freebody. What presumably was grease at one point can now only be described as a muddy gunk. Not exactly the kind of stuff you want to "protect" the pawls and hub shell. I've checked out the video on Hope's website for overhauling the Pro 2 Evo hubs. I would love to swap out all the bearings and do the full service myself, but I don't have all the tools. So I thought I could at least clean and grease the Freebody myself. According to the Video, Hope use a grease called Mobil HXP 222. I can't seem to find this anywhere in SA though. So here's my question, which grease can you recommend I use?
  6. Hint # 01: basic frame specs alluded to in the topic title..

    Hubs

Hi guys Hope the indoor trainers are keeping us all active. Im in the process of building up a racing wheelset for the road but I'm struggling with my hub choice: Hope Mono RS for R4665 DT Swiss 240s for R7013 Tune MIG 70 front and MAG 170 rear for R7255 The gap between the DT and the tune is pushing me towards the tune. But the Hopes are very very good value for money and easy to service What do you guys think? Thanks Mopkop
  8. From our very first Ti-glide hubs launched back in 1993 we've have had a reputation for producing some of the most durable and high quality hubs on the market. This attention to detail has been carried into the new Pro 4 hub range as they are a direct development of the successful Pro 2 EVO. Click here to view the article
