So guys

I went to see a surgeon yesterday, have a problem with these veins in lower left leg. Was starting to become quite serious, the dr said I should thank some family member, as these are "oorerflik". Its quite hectic as they will make a cut from ankle right up to knee on inside of leg and at every place where a vein comes through the muscle, it will be sealed/cut off, something like that. The operation is scheduled for the 24th of this month

If all goes well, I will be out of action (read training) for 4weeks max

Now I havent been able to train much this year, 2 times a week (including weekend LSD ride- MTB)

If I get the green light, I will have 4 and half months to start basically from scratch to prepare for Karoo to Coast. Dont just wanna finish it. So now the question is:

* Do I train from today until the 23rd like a madman in order to further improve my base, or continue as normal

* and will I make it to prepare for K2C if I have to start basically from scratch?

Thanks!

I had that op about three years ago. I'm from PE and Dr. Steward Gibson did it. Honestly, he is the best. Google him, I think his website is www.varicoseveins.co.za or something like that. My vein ran from the inside of my right leg, over the inside of my knee, down to my shin about where it ended with a "crows foot". I think I've got some photos somewhere, will try to put them up. The op is done under local, you aren't put completely under. The vein is completely gone, was a good idea to go.

I went to the Doc about the same situation...He said the same thing about "oorerflik" but otjer than that...nothing!!

Prescribed some compression socks...

Should I "fire" him....

I'm not in any discomfort...but thought the size of this vein cannot be healthy /good for me??

I first went to see a Sport Doctor at Tuks High Performance Centre in last year

She prescribed compression socks and I had to do exercises each morning and night (calf raises and ankle rotations). A middle of the pack kinda rider in compression socks at races just looks funny

Didnt work that well, so I started cycling as well (at least one good thing that came out of it)

Lower left leg:

1. 3,5cm larger in diameter than on right

2. brown spots all over from blood leakage under skin

3. veins a complete stuff up. Not just only one. ( I will try and have the wife take some pics and post it)

4. feels waaayyyy warmer than other leg

5. Ankle painful, like when you twisted it badly

Surgeon said that if I dont get operation: leg will keep on swelling. later on I wont be able to do anything about it, injuries like curts and bruises will never heal properly. In my first race in June last year I bumped my leg against my pedals, the marks are becoming darker as time goes on.

You can delay it with compression socks, but an operation will eventually be needed.

So decided, I'm still relatively young, and rather do it now, so I can get back on the bike as soon as possible afterwards. It was a bit of a downer when I got the news last week, but now I cant wait
