Dont be a hater if you cant afford the nice stuff.

If dropping a few grand to make your machine nice makes you happy,

I'm all for it.

A mate of mine recently did a very expensive Bianchi-Super Record build, and the guilt of dropping all that cash got him back on the bike.

His weight has come down from a chunky 91 kgs to 80kgs in the space of 3 months.

So it can work in reverse

My question is: Will it make me faster. How much difference will 1 kg make on for instance your Argus time - riding with the same effort.

Well, I replaced my R20 top cap with a R80 one just because it was nice and it ADDED 10gr.

You should know by now you can't say something like that without a pic ;)

Not all savings are the same. To drop the weight of wheels from 2000g to 1800g will be R200. To drop from 1200g to 1000g is R20 000.

Exactly, and if you're a overweight slow funrider, you wont go any faster for that R20k.

I replaced my "BeOne" and "Aarozine" caps on my MTB and road bikes respectively with these.

This is not my bike but the end results are the same.

What I don't understand is the weight obsession.

I choose components for many reasons - reliability, colour, reputation, personal experience, price, availability.

I can't remember a single instance where I chose on weight alone...
