Sorry to have to tell you, but from my experience, once the sore throat hits, no matter what you take you will still feel flat. The symtoms might go away, but you will not be on top form if you plan on racing hard. For me the running nose is the killer which happens normally 2 days after the sore throat

You will get some decent starter bikes for under 5k. Look for a Raleigh frame with 105 groupset. I have seen a few recently.
