At the end of a long story, I'm now again the owner of a frame/fork bought new by a friend in 1997, then bought by my brother, then given to me, then given to another brother, and now back in my garage. Like I said, long story...

So I've decided to build up a nice lightweight XC racer on this platform:

I've polished the frame/fork with a combination of Meguiar's Scratch X, Silvo and Meguiar's Gold Class liquid wax, and I have to say it's looking pretty spiffy ;)

I currently have and am going to fit:

- Coda V-brakes, lighter than XT.

- Avid Speed Dial 2.0 levers (in the pic).

- Cannondale Fire XC flat bar, 580mm, 190g.

I'm planning on doing the rest as follows:

- 2011 Mavic CrossRide UB wheelset, 1700g

- SLX chainset

- XT shadow rear

- SLX front

- SLX casette

- LX/105 chain

- RaceFace Ride XC stem

- Bargain-bin seat, probably a Giant OEM carbon, 190g

Stock weight on this puppy was 10.6kg in 1997 with an XT build with XTR rear derailleur, the tubeset is Easton Elite and it feels very light, so I reckon it's possible to get close to 10kg with the more modern stuff (cranks and BB used to weigh a ton back then!)

Cool. I look forward to seeing this project. The frame looks great.

I wonder what the problem is, that you feel compelled to call me out?

I am going to take exception to this poor conduct and express the following:

You are an antagonist, a troll and a grossly arrogant and conceited individual.

I also identify you as an enzyme. You clearly demonstrate intolerance and express compulsion to break down all comments and fellow forum users that offer a contradictory opinion. An absence of tact and manner, and abrasive personal commentary; has involved you in several heated exchanges on this forum. I call for all forum users and administrators to reflect on and acknowledge this truth.

I know that you recently received some promotion as

Very nice. I wish I had never sold my old Kona. Best hardtails ever.

My first real MTB was a Cider Cone. It was baby-poo brown. Loved it.

Have an old Kona Koa at home in piece. Must build it up again.

I have just such a Cinder Cone, in baby-poo brown, circa 1994. Great bike, I even rode the 2004 Epic on it. Currently built up as a touring bike though.

Yeah, I bought mine in 1995, but it was the previous year's model, so the same bike. Alas, it was lifted from the side of my house. I was very bummed at the time! Do you know if Kona still do a Project Two-type fork?

Oopsie, to the OP, sorry for the mini-hijack. Nice bike!

Thats crazy, I swapped that intense frame I sold you for my trusty Kona Kula, I miss my Kula every day!

In my humble opinion the Kona Kula is hands down the best hardtail ever built.

Thanks! :) My father has a 1994 Lava Dome (white), which now serves as my stepmother's favourite ride, resprayed and running a 1996 Indy XC fork that I converted to coil with a bunch of spare parts. She won't ride a 2008 Mongoose that he bought for her, the Kona gets all the attention.

Haha, I didn't realise that!

In my humble opinion I'll then shortly have two of the best MTBs ever built. Trust me, the Intense is not exactly rubbish - out of all the bikes, I rate it as the best one I've ever owned, by far

My brother went for a ride in Jonkershoek recently, and swopped his Commencal Meta 5.5 for a while with the Kula. Apparently, the rest of the guys were really embarrassed when he dropped them on the DH section on the Kona. :D

Keeping it real! I approve

Norman, I've already got the brakes sorted thanks (check out the polished Avid levers in the pic), your wheelset will probably be outside my budget (I already have another expensive bike to maintain!). The CrossRide UBs are brilliant value at R1500 from CRC.
