And right there I think is why it seems like loads of people think mountain biking is about riding on hard compact dirt roads. Entry level bikes for entry level roads. Not this ride up a mountain with rocks and sand and break a colarbone and call it epic.

Then I don't get your previous post, as it indicates that special skills are needed, so what is really scaring people off ?

Think there is a lot of truth to this post. When riding the fantastic singletrack in Tokai, I always see tons of guys in tight lycra who only seem to ride the 4x4 roads. All this beatifull trail and guys just stick to the jeep tracks?

Singletrack and getting dirty on trails is what got me into mtb. Seems the sport is splitting more and more. Not sure you can say road and mtb riding anymore. mtb now covers xc, freeriding, downhill, dj, trial riding - each a different sport and culture.

what's 'dj', EvilRabbit?

well when you go off the dirt road, and into say small rocky sections, or single track with roots and stuff, so the transition is from "road riding on dirt" if I may call it that - to more cross country - the skills are different, the disciplines different, and back to the original question - the traditions are different (and in my humble opinion, its because of the lack of spectators).

Cannot compare Mountain Biking to Road Racing...

No discussion warranted.

C'mon, dudes (& dudettes, if you're here)

Both have unique challenges. And similar challenges, but less so.

Respect!

...uhm, no.

So here on earth...

I have mates on both sides of the fence and without a doubt road riding is more elitist and hostile especially at the casual level. Mountain bikers are druggies? showing some ignorance there mate and losing some credibility in your statements.

Road riding has been around since late 1800's or so I think. Mountain biking only the last 20 or 30 years. Of course there will be your "legends" in the sport as it has been around over 120 years longer and would have a wider support. But realize more mtb bikes ared sold now than road bikes and mtb has progressed into one of the fastest evolving sports at an equipment and skill level. Not sure how much tech skills have changed in road riding over the last 15 years by comparison. Road bikes are on ave more expensive than mtb bikes so not sure where the elitist statement comes from, in fact do get where any of your statements come from.

Don't worry, I don't get any of your ramblings or arguments either! Your logic seems self-serving and vague. I quite like the random pointlessness of it all. Well done, you will survive long here on the Hub!

If you think there are less druggies in mtb than on the road then you really must believe in the Easter bunny too! Some cyclists dope whether they are roadies or mountainbikes (or roadie mountainbikers like some of the Epic riders!).

Thanks for agreeing road has more legends. Glad to know we agree on something!

I would like to debate some of your other points, but I don't actually get your deductions about my opinions. Any chance of being less vague?

...and lighten up. This is just for fun. I mean, if you were really serious about cycling you would be riding the Epic today! Right?

OK, I feel all warm and fuzzy, now tell us what you REALLY think!

Come on, this is the eternal Hub debate. It has no ending! Glad to know nothing on the Hub has changed...

REAL cyclists would ride mountain trails on steel framed, single speed, road bike fixies. The rest of us are just wannabee posers!

Wait, let me go pack my bike. I have to ride in Vlaanderen on Saturday with a roadbike on a road not even fit for a hardtail! I'll leave your guys to theorise about life while I go and live it ;-)
