My Geax tires have been reduced to slicks so I purchased a Specialized fasttrack to replace it with (29er).

Now you have to understand that I'm stubborn and I don't like to be helped with these things (I may be stranded on my own at some point so Ms Independent needs to be self-sufficient). Holy cr@p did I battle to get the old tires off and the new ones on. I've heard that they aren't the easiest wheels to get tires on and off but I broke one of my tire spanners and had an upper body workout of note.

Then to add to the entertainment, I pumped up the newly installed tire a bit harder than I'd ride it to get it to seat properly on the rim and BANG!!! off the tire came and sprayed my spectating husband in an expensive shower of stans (my ears are still ringing).

My stubborness did at least pay off and my fasttrack is on and ready to roll but has anybody else had similar challenges getting tires on and off stans rims?

Check under the videos section on www.notubes.com. The have a video there on mounting and dismounting.

What has to happen is that you first have to push the tyre out of the bead socket, breaking the tubeless seal, into the central cavity/ditch and then use the tyre lever to pop it out.

It is all there in the video.

How are they converted -tape and valve or rimstrip ?

I prefer the tape and valve, I had an issue on the 355 rim with rimstrips where tyres were really hard to seat, ends up the spoke bed was built up with insulation tape so there was no space for the tyre bead to hook into the rim.

I have a brand new set of Racing Ralpf UST's I tried for 3 days to get them to fit and eventually gave up there is no way they will fit my Crest's not even close

Some tyres just wont fit the Crest's :(

Coti race/mountain king Ust's are quite a tight fit as were my Hutchinsons but the Ralphs seem as though they are the wrong size that is how bad the mismatch is

They are the ZTR crest with tape and valve (not rim strip). Both the Geax and Spesh tires are folding. I could get the bead out of the recess on the rim without a problem, it was just getting the actual bead over the rim which was the challenge (but glad it took me less than 3 days).

Will definitely take a look at the stans video (and do some more upper body strength training in the interim :-))

Lube the tyre bead with a little sunlight liquid and it should go a lot easier.

... and I'll try the sunlight liquid (instead of using a touch of the stans as a lube next time - don't think my husband will stand too close this time to see if the tire stays on)

A little tip guys... If you struggle to get a certain tyre to go tubeless, pop a regular old MTB tube in there (2.125" odd). Pump the tyre hard and let it sit for a day. It helps the tyre to take then "open" shape. Take the tube out then and try again.

you should also pinch the bead intot he center of the rim bed, it has a marginally smaller diameter and makes getting them on and off easier.

The fastraks do stretch a bit so it wont be that hard next time you have to open them up to refill
