I ride a Giant Anthem 29 er. I am happy with the hubs but uncomfortable with the tubeless conversions. I want to get tubeless rims laced to the existing hubs.

I need help with the following:

1) what factors do I need to take into consideration when selecting tubeless rims

2) are these rims available in SA or must I import them

3) which rims do you suggest and why

4) which LBS is bestfor getting the wheels laced in JHB near Cresta

Hi there Doggone

I have been riding 29er now for over a year, and FULL TIME TUBELESS...

Things you need to consider:

1. How many spokes are your hubs laced with (32 / 36)?

2. Your riding style (all wheels in the ground / air-ie fairie)?

3. Your weight?

4. Your requirements from the rims (e.g. low maintenance)?

5. Rim selection will depend on all of the above (spokes, style, your weight, weight you would like your wheels to come out on)

I have had a set of Mavics 29CS and a pair of ZTR Stan's Flow 29er recently accuired.

My bike feels completely different from one wheelset to the next.

These rims are available here, and for the service and backup, there is almost a negledgable difference in price (even more if you consider the +-20% IMPORT DUTIES).

In terms of lateral stiffness (witch is what you want on a 29er wheel), the Stan's beats the Mavic HANDS DOWN!!!

I must add, the Stan's was built specific to my weight and riding style...

The shop I will reccommend is Mike's Bikes (011 888 8868)in Greenside (maybe 15min from Cresta).

All the mentioned issues will be addressed, and then some more...

Happy hooping

Johan Borman from Yellow Saddle is a custom wheel builder in the Cresta/Fairlands area that will build you the perfect wheelset based on your budget, intended use, etc. He'll also give you a better deal than anyone and he'll maintain and true the wheels for you in future if necessary. You don't get much better than that!

There is no import duty on wheels or any other bike components. Local prices for Tubeless type rims like Stans are around R600 to R800 each, spokes R12- R18 (you need 64) each. Labour probably 300 per wheel. Suddenly you might find it very close to a new wheelset.
