Hi Guys,

Was wondering if any of you knew any reasons why my Fox RP2 propedal switch would not work anymore after about 150km of riding.

I noticed it on Sunday morning before going to Groenkloof for a ride, the bike is a 2010 Giant Trance X2.

I bought the bike at the end of January 2011, havent done a lot of riding since then but now its time to rack up some fun time.

Usually flipped to the drive side you feel the pro-pedal, flipped to the opposite side its open but now with it flipped either way it makes no difference when the last ride I did feel it. I weigh 89kg and have it pumped to 185psi.

So I took the bike back to where I got a "good deal n all"... Got quite annoyed within the first few minutes being there because the first thing the guy tries to do after me telling him what the problem is, he wants to check the pressure, I told him the pressure is fine you need to look at what it does but this fell onto deaf ears and I got the 1000 yard stare in return.

So I took another bike they had on the floor with a RP2 rear shock and showed him what its supposed to do and then showed him mine once again and then only did the light start to flicker...

So, Its going back next week Tuesday after the long weekend so they can send it in for fixing.

3 Questions:

Should this happen to the shock with only 150 odd kays on it?

Since I bought the bike end of Jan 2011 would this be under warranty of sorts to get the shock fixed?

If it is under warranty does my bike ONLY have to go back to them because my level in faith there is somewhat diminished after yesterdays experience not to mention the staff arent all too friendly apart from when they see you are gonna spend some money.

Firstly what compression tune do you have on the shock? soft, medium or firm. There is a little 3bar indicator sticker on the side near the compression shaft in a little blue field. To the propedal ON side. Three bars, with the smallest soft, middle medium and largest indicating firm.

If you are riding a soft compression tune at your weight you will not notice any diffs between propedal on or shock open.

If it is a medium, have you set sag correctly?

Does the propedal lever 'click' when you swing it over?

If you are in doubt and want to check warranty issues phone Omnico direct. 011 7943808. Speak to Francois

Hi Drongo,

Thanks for the number, Ill give him a call if I dont have any luck with the bike shop next week.

I dont have the bike near me right now to have a look at the shock, my sag was set at 25% with my Camelbak on.

Its just strange that it used to work when I flipped the switch, very noticable in fact and now when I flip the switch there is nothing, basically making the switch an ornament.

I thought it was my imagination at first until I tried it on my girlfriends Anthem, hers works exactly like mine used to so something is definitely not so happy in there.

When I switch the lever over it does not make a firm click, but in having said this it does flip either way quite easily.

Ill have a lookie later and see what compression tune I have on the shock.

Ok on the shock I have the following around the bottom...

Velocity Tune L

Rebound M

Boost Valve Tune 200

The colours are the colours of the little blocks they are in. Hope this helps.

I checked again earlier and the switch does not feel as clicky as the one on my girlfriends Anthem.

Sounds like you have the new 2011 Fox RP2*3 if you have VT and BVT.

Not familiar with it. Best to contact Omnico. I am sure it will still be under warranty. Just make sure you have done all the setup correctly, along with correct sag setting for the travel length.

Sorry I could not give more help. Only familiar with 07 - 10 RP2 and RP23

I had a simular issue with an xfusion shock. Turned out it was bust but bike shop sent it in under warranty to probs. I would also like to know why this happens? Initially I thought its because I lock out on climbs (which still has some little bumps by nature of mtb'ing), but surely that can't be the reason as what would the point be of lock-out .... SeanN did u also ride lockout on uphill (although the fox doesn't have complete lockout) ?

It shouldn't happen to a low-mileage shock but stuff happens. It most likely will be fixed under gaurantee. TAke the shock off yourself and have them send it in to Omnico.

The RP series shocks are very robust but not without problems. The propedal mechanism comprises one shaft adn two tubes. Shaft inside one tube, that tube inside another tube. The innermost part, the shaft, is about 1.5mm thick and is sealed inside the tube with an o-ring, as is that tube inside the final tube. These o-rings are tiny - 1.2mm ID, the one. If they fail, they prevent the shafts from sliding and you get a dead propedal lever. I suspect most of them fail from assembly faults, where the O-ring gets damaged upon insertion.

Those shocks are actually incredibly complex and your local bike shop shouldn' attempt to fix it.

Hi Guys, thanks for all the responses :-)

MissionMan, Yes I did flip it into propedal on the steep climbs, not all too often though I mainly had it in the open position.

Johan, Thanks for this info, I will check with them if they will let me take it off myself and give it to them, that would be ideal for me because I dont quite fancy the idea of leaving my bike with them purely because of their attitude when I went there the other day.

One question would be once Ive given it to them to send in how would I check they have fixed it without having to put it back on the bike after I have got it back? Excuse my ignorance, it may be a silly question but I dont want to have the hassle of taking it off and then them telling me its done when there is in fact no difference.

It isn't easy for anyone to BS that one. The lever will get its positive clicks back. You can also compare it to another one on the floor or, ask for a distributor note of sorts.

Clearly they thought it was rather easy, I went to collect the bike yesterday after being phoned and told it was ready during the week and I saw the shock hadnt even been removed...

I walked in and they brought my bike, i compress the rear with the propedal lever open and then with it on.... lo an behold its the f...in same as it was when i brought it in. So before pissing in my pants and bleating profanities I asked what was done and I get told look it works and then he turns the little red knob to its maximum 8 clicks the other way.

I said to him thats not the point, the propedal lever does not work, LOOK!!!

So I wanted to show him on another bike on the floor, the guy then says to me let me get someone you can show. This pi$$ed me off because the last fool I showed gave me the 1000 yard stare and a blank expressionless face and made me come back to an unfixed bike yesterday.

I told the guy, I am going to show YOU because you are the boss here, it seems he saw what I was talking about, lets hope I dont have to go another 2 weeks without my bike.

If I have no joy again they will never see business from me ever again, Im just wondering because the bike wasnt bought from a different LBS would they help me out with a warranty claim on the shock from the Omnico??

Dude.

I think you should phone Omnico. After 150km the shop should just send it back to them anyway!

I mate blew his Spez Brain shock the other day. Bike about 3 months old. Concept swapped it out without a moments hez.

Enough of the BS. Bleat! An who are these NUBBINS anyway. Name?

I just called Omnico now, Francois was in a meeting so I chatted to another guy.

He reckons I should just take the bike into a different shop and they will do it for me.

I will see what the story is from the bike shop that has my bike at this point, if I have no joy with them I will name them here for all to be careful of.

Its now 6 weeks later since I took my bike in to Cajees Fourways...

I went today to go and collect my bike after I got a call and told it was FINALLY 100%

I walk in check the bike, and its got some new styling done to it, some new scratches that were not there before. F$%^&n pissed off now at this cycle shop!!

I know its a mountain bike but thats besides the point, if I scratch it, thats fine but if its done without my consent thats a different story.

Dont ever take your bike to Cajees in Fourways, the absolute BS story you will get fed week after week will not end, 6 weeks of crap stories and scratches on my frame, the scrathes are small but still there.

Im taking my bike there next week again and they will replace my shock, not to mention that I was told they will replace it 3 weeks back already.

Cajees Fourways, never go there unless you are prepared for BS story one after the next.

Their lack of interest in sorting out the issue amazes me, they think I am stupid when it comes to bikes, maybe someone else but certainly not me...... Im no master bicycle mechanic by my own admission but dont try pull the wool over my eyes and lie.

Maybe I should try take it to another LBS and see if they can sort it out as it is a warranty issue, the bike is 5 months old now with a few scratches compliments of Cajees Fourways.

Im heavily cheesed off because Ive given them 6 weeks of opportunity to sort it out and absolutely NOTHING has been done to my bike apart from scratch it.

Im at my witts end with their BS stories week after week.

Don't go back to Cajees, speak to Russell at Fox.. 021 691 0110. He should be able to nominate a shop to handle warranty replacement. Explain, briefly your encounter and stress it has been 6 weeks. This should not be a repair job if the shock has failed (does not sound like wear and tear).

Omnico imports Fox and they are really helpful. Julian will also be able to help if Russell is not available, same number.
