and any other info like where to leave cars that they will be safe etc.

Have a look here. Start is where everybody parks, and the route is to the top, down to the shabeen and back to the car. Enjoy it!

PM me your e-mail address and I send you a GPS map .... you must however get permission from HRH Nancy Drew to engage in any activity on her hallowed turf ;)

just a quick question, how safe is the route in terms of rider numbers? ie: will a group of 3 or 4 be fine or should one rather have larger numbers and second, and second would a back up vehicle be able to follow the riders?

The 5km down th back is not for the fain of heart, nor the unfit. I don't know whether the bridge that nearly washed away (towards the shebeen) before the ride I posted has been fixed. If you missed the 2m section to go over the bridge then, you would have been a hospital case.

3 or 4 riders should be fine. Car(not advisable)/bakkie to follow is a nice-to-have. Only a proper 4x4 will be able to go down (and definitely back up) the other side! Take something to eat/extra(full Camelbak) to drink. Only food/water on the route is at the shebeen on the other side.

ok i've just taken a look at the satellite photo's of the route looks like district road all the way, when you say only a 4x4 will make it over is that because of the gradient or is the surface something totally else, like something similar to sani pass? and just looks smooth on the satellite pictures

Just before the first hairpin (from Hekpoort to the top) there is a badly washed away section. Bakkie might or might not be able to make it past that. However after you've crested, going down the other side towards Buffelspoortdam / the shebeen, there is a really bad rocky section. Normal cars will NOT be able to get past here as you need quite a bit of ground clearance as well as a difflock OR 4x4. Even if you force yourself through with a 2x4 low ground clearance vehicle on the way down, you'll be in for a heck of a detour (either via Rustenburg, or Harties) to get back.

Hi,

Check out alloutmtb.co.za, I will have the review and video footage of the breedtsnek ride as well as altitude profile uploaded on wednesday. There will also be google earth map of the route.

I live down the road and ride up there on my own own regularly (always midweek as its pretty quiet then), never had any problems (in 17 years of hiking up and around there as well) but as usual in South Africa, nothing is for granted! The road is in a poor condition but some work has been done to it, although I would not recommend taking anything but a 4x4 up there, part of the poor road condition is due to saloon cars and normal bakkies spinning the road surface up as they try to find traction.
