Hello,

I have confidence in the people on this site; well I guess I can see who-'knows' and who-'thinks'.

So I would like if the experts can tell me what-to-lube, what-to-wax, what-to-grease...and if there is any other what-to's-....

Most important I would like to know which products out there are the most popular, not just by price, but as a complete package.

Also, how often must I apply; only after washes?

I have a duel suspension MTB with disk breaks.

Looking forward to read the replies!!

What works best for me is to totally degrease everything. Chain, casette, derailleur and all else. When everything is clean I just apply Squirt which is a dry lube. I find that it works well, especially on my road bike.

Yip, I use the Squirt on my chain, just dont think it is sufficient for everything else; like my shocks and gearset.

Sorry to hear about your fighting suspension and the resultant broken discs.

Nevertheless. There's nothing to lube on a bike after a regular wash other than the chain. For that you need oil, not wax, which is not a good enough lubricant, since it doesn't flow back after tension has been applied to the chain. This has been discussed here often, search for it.

Dont go for the popular products, go for the ones that make sense. Oil is your friend. Was is apparently a good alternative to shaving your legs.

 Yes shave your legs with oil and wax your chain . Johan is 100% correct as far as I am concerned . I have read about greasing this and that but there really is no need .

I'm also pretty interested........ DRY or WET? Which lube to use on your drive train. The first two replies recommended a dry lube, and then the third recommended WET.......... So it's obviously not "cut and dried". Also It has been recommended to drop some lube on the top of the Fork seals to prevent any abrasive substances wearing down the seal. What are you feelings about this?

It seems like my chain is rusting - well has rust build-up on it.

This MTB is new - bought in February.

I have been using Squirt dry lube on it on a regular basis and I do not understand this.

Can someone please tell me what I must use or do....

My dad is an ex-springbok cyclist from 1974 (some where) and he said he use to boil his chan in a pot with wax....ummmm...seems a bit rediculis to me at this time...

WHAT TO DO?

There is also a terible noise coming from the front sproket when riding in highest gear (front and back together)....

I need to lube this setup urgently I think.

I need some expert advice please!

I use a wet lube on my chain, and I use WD-40 on all the bolts, shifter mechanisms and into the derailleur parts that move.

The rust should only be surface rust, Park Tool make those chain cleaners that you can put engine cleaner into and it clips on the chain, you turn the pedals and it cleans the chain for you. If there isn't 20kg's of caked mud on your chain it works like a bomb  rinse thoroughly (Note: never use a high pressure hose) and let it dry before you lube it.

that's what i do anyway..

I use Squirt as my dry lube of choice. Dry means it should be used in dry conditions. Wet lube in the wet...

The difference is in the viscosity - dry lubes are more liquid to get into all the nooks and crannies nicely but the lower viscosity means they wash off faster when riding in the wet, corssing rivers etc. Wet lubes don't lubricate as well as dry but they last longer on the chain when riding in the wet because they are thicker.

The noise you hear when in the big ring has nothing to do with the chain - I'm guessing it's the big chain ring rubbing against the outside of the front derailleur...check your alignment.

Oil/lube the chain (most lubes contain some wax - especially the dry ones like Squirt).

Grease bearings.

Most modern bikes have sealed bearins meaning you can't really grease them unless you remove the seals to gain access to the ball bearings/race.

Hope that helps!

At least I did not say 'ALL'....

I have had bad service from CWC but it doesn't mean I have to write them off...

Plus...some of my loyal good MTB friends are on here and I trust them...But I ask here as I want as much feedback and opinions I can get so I can make-up my own mind (which is a strong one) :)

I might not know much about MTBing at this moment, but I am quite technical!
