Hey guys and girls

I want to get into cycling now for a few reasons, loosing weight and networking with other people. I have been back and forth between road bike and mtb. Alot of people are telling me to go for the mtb as there has been a lot of fatal accidents on the roads with road cycling. I have been in a serious motorcycle accident and i definitely dont want to go through that again.

Please can you help me make a decision and also what bike will be best for under R10k?

thanks

Dfresh welcome to The Hub and also cycling world.

Im sure you will enjoy every moment regardless if its road or mtb. Road vs Mtb can cause a huge debate. I enjoy both thus will not comment on which to choose , you will quickly find what works for you.

Remember to add your extras clothing , shoes , helmet etc to your budget.

Most important enjoy and be safe !

A second hand one. Provided you take someone who knows their stuff when you go look at it.

as an avid triathlete and funrider MTB I would suggest MTB, for the fun factor (dont tell anyone i said this) nothing beats MTB :) I see you are also in PE.. PE as lots of lekker places to ride + we have the Baakens Valley running through the middle and with the XC Nationls having just been here we have a fantastic new XC course :) having said that I have found in PE that networking and socialising while riding is easier with the road bunches as there are alot more organised rides on the road side of thing.

or you could try running, it's a lot cheaper :) lots of running clubs that meet for 'social' running and beer drinking! haha! Old Grey TT tonight at 17h30, 15k's from the Old Grey Sports Club!!

Welcome!

There are pros & cons for both mtb'ing & road cycling... yeah right! Only pros!!

I ride on the road & off, and I love both... For me road cycling is better for the fitness, while mtb'ing is more fun & better for socialising. But it's a close call.

Getting a good secondhand bike is the best way to start. And the Hub is one of the best places to get one!

PE's roads are pretty safe, although I shouldn't say that as I have been hit by a car. We have lots of country roads in good condition with very little traffic. There are plenty of organised road rides leaving at different times from different parts of the city.

MTBing is pretty social and there are lots of places to ride, but not alone. There was a thread not to long ago of mtbers being attacked in the Baakens Valley. Luckily the attackers were caught.

Why not spend R6 000 on a road bike and R4 000 on a MTB and then you will have the best of both worlds.

welcome.

Firstly R10 000 is a nice budget for a beginner and i am sure you will pick up a decent 2nd within that price range.

But dont forget, as a newby, you also need accessories which will add up very quickly. So look at keeping a minimum of R2000 aside for things such as helmets, gloves, odemeter, lights, bottle cages/ camelpak, pump, repair kit etc.

I think i will start off with MTB for now. I know the best thing would be to buy second hand, but i am a little weird and buying second hand would bother me. What is the best bike for that price range.

what should i look for?

thx again

I was on the look out for a second hand mtb myself, i couldnt find anything so popped in to Wayne Pheiffer cycles yesterday. They are most helpful. Tell them what your budget is and tell them they must also include the accessories in that price. They will even let you hop on a few bikes and take them for a ride.

After i left yesterday i had purchased a bike and felt very comfortable with the choice i had made.

Good luck and happy riding
