Mine is an iPhone4 with Camera+ Half strength HDR. I then adjusted the contrast and brightness in PS7 and smoothed the clouds with a blur filter. The HDR Filter makes them grainy.

Yes correct... I never saw the curve on the waterline

I looked at it, liked it, but could not pin down "why" at first. After a few seconds I realised it was the curved waterline that gave it the extra pizzaz.

I find it interesting that you can get two types of good pics. There is the type that dazzles you straight away, normally because its a striking subject. That photo of the leapard is a great example. You then get ones like the lakeshot from Dangle, which can grip you, but in far more subtle ways. Unfortunately, a lot of lay-people will look at this category of pic and never appreciate it fully, they only like the pics where the subject is easy to see, and thus no need for interpretation.

In that "curved waterline" photo, the waterline was not the gripping focal point for me, but rather the 3D effect of the in-focus reeds and the reflective water ripples in the foreground that made it.

That is where the composition of the pictures comes in as well as the rule of thirds (which I think falls under composition). It isn't always about a particular subject, but rather a compination of objects as well as the effect. **** photography is hard!

This was posted in one of the other threads a while ago, but it is very true!!

I finally downloaded my eclipse pics, boy what a load of tripe they were. However, after a bit of playing around to get the edge of the penumbra shadow into a red spectrum, the end effect is interesting - but still far from publishing material. Anyone get any good pics & post processing work done on the eclipse?

I got this... Only one in focus (well sort of) and as close to what I saw with my eye as possible (Might be a bit exposed) Definitely not publishing material, but seeing as you asked... Full zoom on a 70-300 Sigma.

Edit: having another look at yours, this one is pretty k@k really!

There's a reason why my pics of the full blown eclipse went straight to the recycle box, mine were dismal. There was so little light to play with, that getting a proper exposure without very high ISO levels (and hence noise)was impossible on my setup. Focussing was also nigh impossible. I think that some things you do need pro kit for...

The moon is actually very difficult to photograph and you need to play with your camera settings to get it right.

I hear you! I couldn't even see the moon using live view so I tried focusing manually. At that angle with that amount of light I battled. Switched to shutter priority and set the shutter speed from 2 - 5 seconds to see what came close. Only looked at the pics on the PC the next night and saw how far off I was. :(
