@Leeu: you are lucky to get a photo like that! I have heard that those are rare to see let alone photograph!

@Dangle: What are you using to get that overexposed grainy effect on your pictures (Hope that is the right terminology...) The effect is really awesome!

The first two are images with some HDR work done.

The third one is a straight conversion.

These images were taken with a Sony NEX 3 so some definition and sharpening in aperture has been applied.

Yes. Reffering to the first two. I have seen some of your previous colour shots both here and on Flickr and at a glance they have a canvas print type effect. I am fairly new to the SLR game and am still shooting in Jpeg format. Are those shot in RAW and then manipulated later?

Edit: I just did a bit of reading on Wiki and answered my own question. Time to start using ALL the buttons on my camera and use the net!

Great work by the way. How long have you been taking pics? You got a good eye.

Hi Grebel

Thanks

I started taking pics last year in August.

I take all images in raw, most I keep natural, some of them look good at the moment, as ll the senses are involved, get it on the screen at home and it looks bland, some manipulation and a bit of this and that and you actually have something to look at

Some more with my Sony NEX 3, I like this camera, it's smaller than my SLR and very convenient to carry around, also you don't look like a paparazzi all the time.

I have been at it for about a while now. Got a Sony Alpha 350 DSLR. Problem is that like you say, to carry it around all the time, you look like a tool. I often find myself seeing something and thinking that it would make a great shot but I don't have my camera on me... I looked at the NEX3 but for the price I think I would rather look like a tool and buy more stuff for the 350! I just need to get out more and shoot stuff. You eventually run out of stuff to shoot in your garden...

I hear you, but theres always something new...

Saturday morning, at 09.00, the spray from the freeze valve on my solar geyser had produced (b)icycles ..

@Grebel, I was lucky, as a man who knows platsak I was fortunate enough to have the entire family club together and get me the NEX 3 :D

Patham I really like those, I also like your thinking, there is always an opportunity.

My day yesterday was all mono.

@patham Nice shots there! You are right! I suppose if you actually opened your eyes when you walk around the garden (or anywhere for that matter), there are a multitude of things to shoot. Also the same thing will look completely different at different times of the day.

@Dangle Nice shots man! The roof shot looks like a bit of fisheye going on there. I am going to start carrying my camera around with me more. You never know whaen you could stumble across an awesome shot!

@Tarmac Nice contrast. Is that HDR?

Could be an i-phone with lomo or instagram perhaps.

Thanks for the compliment, the roof and the water shot are both fisheye.

Yes correct... I never saw the curve on the waterline

I looked at it, liked it, but could not pin down "why" at first. After a few seconds I realised it was the curved waterline that gave it the extra pizzaz.

I find it interesting that you can get two types of good pics. There is the type that dazzles you straight away, normally because its a striking subject. That photo of the leapard is a great example. You then get ones like the lakeshot from Dangle, which can grip you, but in far more subtle ways. Unfortunately, a lot of lay-people will look at this category of pic and never appreciate it fully, they only like the pics where the subject is easy to see, and thus no need for interpretation.

That is where the composition of the pictures comes in as well as the rule of thirds (which I think falls under composition). It isn't always about a particular subject, but rather a compination of objects as well as the effect. **** photography is hard!

This was posted in one of the other threads a while ago, but it is very true!!
