DISCLAIMER: ORIGINAL POSTER IS PRETTY CLUELESS WITH COMPUTERS!

So my laptop is apparently overloaded. Need to make some space or get more space....it's a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo with 80gig.

Have about 24gig worth of music. Have never been sure how it works but it now seems as if iTunes makes seperate copies of the music that I had in my music folder when I got the iPod hence when I click 'Properties' on the music folder (which contains the iTunes music folder) I have in the region of 45gig worth of music. I remember it asking me if I wanted to keep the originals when I loaded all the music into iTunes.

So, firstly need to delete the copies.

Thinking of just getting an external harddrive to store my music BUT how will this affect using my iPod?

Would I be able to access the external HD through the laptop and iTunes and update my iPod?

What are the other options?

Right now I just need to get it off. I could just delete it all and update from the Ipod later but it's risky....if something happens to the iPod I'm f_ed!!!!!

I suppose I could just get more gigs for the laptop?

Enough rambling.....the guys that know will be clever enough to understand.

Thanks Big%20smile

I lost you when you mentioned iTunes. I hate that program and how it links to an iPod. What ever happened to drag and drop like with my cheap R300 mp3 player.

Jip. External Hard disk drive is best. USB type works great.

Or burn all your pics. and data to CD\DVD and delete it off the Notebook.

What's easier then "see item in box A but want it in box B so I will click here and it will move" rather then "do you want to sync? previous items will be deleted, are you sure? get ready to sync. Going to sync in t minus 30 seconds. Last chance to press the cancelation button."

Mamapara I have to agree with you I-Tunes is a pain in the back but once you get the hang of it seems to work fine !

Like I said, I'm clueless. I thought about this but then would it still be possible to load/delete stuff off the iPod and create playlists etc....? I ask this cos when you normally insert a disc it'll ask me to 'Import using iTunes'....can't do that everytime and then delete afterwards?

I don't want to just have something to backup the music....I wanna be able to manage it

I suppose I should just sort the files out first. I know that deleting the copies should automatically free up about 20gig so I suppose that would solve the problem?

I've just been thinking 'EXTERNAL HD' all the time but only realised this morning that I had so many duplicate songs

First tip:

Winamp is a great way to manage your iPod. It has drag and drop and you can copy files from the iPod on any computer.

Second tip:

Sometimes when iTunes imports MP3s it changes the format e.g it changes MP3,WMA etc. to AAC (Apple's) format. You've probably asked it to keep the original files.

Look for .m4a or .mp4 files. You can probably safely delete them if there are corresponding mp3 files for those tracks.
