Must be that acoustics theory again (alu vs carbon), using disk brakes just makes it sounds like you have better control and brake later and harder. scotty2007-11-28 00:59:50

The huge advantage to disks is that you have much better control / modulation and can brake later and harder as a result. The downside is when they go wrong - they realy do go wrong.

 

Not true. You can't brake later and harder as a result. With both brakes you have more than enough power - enough being the point where the wheel loses traction. It is a myth that disc brakes offer more power - they may have (who knows) but it cannot be proven or used' date=' since traction is the limiting factor.

Sorry True, I am not saying you get more power. What I am saying is that the improved modulation afforded by disk brakes allows better control - not power - under braking this allows you to take your bike right up to the point of lock up, which with vee's is more difficult as vee's tend to "grab" when you hit them hard.

Sorry True, I am not saying you get more power. Ok so. Do i need to replace my V break system with another V break system or do i just need new pads?

 

If pad's what pads? Coolstop?

 

If whole system what system?

 

can i change it all myself or should i take it somewhere?

Interesting topic this.  Johan, what is the difference in contact area between the pads/rims for V's and in the case of disks?  Will this not play a role in stopping the bike?  My physics is crap, but will a larger contact area not generate more friction (analogous to a woman maybe slipping on polished floor in high heels while not doing so in flat-heeled shoes?)

The V's would have a smaller contact area, I estimate. But it is not just a matter of contact area but a matter of pressure per unit area. The lady on her high heels exerts more pressure per square mm than the elephant. The elephant weighs more but causes less damage to wooden floors.

 

In the case of brakes, the mechanical advantage in the lever and slave mechanism determines how much pressure is applied. The other factors that govern the friction and thus indirectly the stopping force, is the co-efficient of friction between the various materials. It is quite high for rubber on aluminium and quite low for asbestos on steel, hence the high pressure required here.

Like Johan mentioned if you skidding any wheel while braking then you are doing it wrong and need to work on your cycling . BUT you still get better braking control and more of it with disks and I don't care what the chaps in the white coats say , I have used both and that is my findings . Pad wear in the wet will affect both systems but on a rim brake system you will again not have nearly the amount of stopping power than you would have with a disk . We all know one the wheel skids you are not braking anymore and this is where the real power of disks comes in . You can control your braking so much better eliminating skidding . Why do you wanna cycle with a fist full of brakes when you can do it with one finger and still be able to control it ??
