also forget to add that when i take my son along i walk much more so the spes it is then.i normally ride vp downhill/bmx style pedals so if i go with my son i try to be unclipped with the more takkie type spes and i play a bit eg practicing wheelies/jumping while i wait for him.

i guess it all comes down to personal preference.

The comment on the Stiff Sole, does that really increase pedal power..

I think so, I changed from takkies to proper shoes last year (although a cheap pair of cycling shoes) and they made a big difference for me, in addition the sole of your foot will also thank you as the shoes make for a much more comfortable ride.

I bought a pair of these a few weeks back, very comfortable for cycling and great to walk in, I am not a great fan of hills so often do a spot of walking (and exploring) and find that they are stiff enough for cycling but also have good tread for some walking/pushing.

+1 on that model. I also looked long and hard at various shoe reviews to get a pair that have a bit of flex in the soles, and enough tread for rock hopping. I have seen enough race snakes slip & fall with the ultra rigid soles. I fall down enough when I am on the bike, no need to add to my woes when off it.

Me too.

(Don't some of the top guys ride in road shoes?)

Serious?

I have no grounds for this, but I find that hard to believe as most of the top end shoes are the same, with different rubber add-ons (i.e. the entire Sidi range, S Works, Mavic)Would they then ride in road shoes and risk not being able to get off and run that small 10m section in order to save 20gr?

Well. the MTBers ahve copied roadies and are sprting white bibs nowadays, so I suppose anything is possible :P

i had a good chuckle at some xc riders this past weekend, stopping and carrying their mtb's over some small branches. mate and i proceeded to ride/bunnyhop over them much to the dismay of the onlookers.

i swear they were roadies in disguise.

on the shoe topic. i have a pair of axo freeride shoes.

look like takkies, have a stiff sole and clipless.

work good for me, not a huge amount of tread but i havent fallen yet, they have you usual 'shoe' tread tho
