Cool, thanks for the feedback...

It has arrived. Its at Adventure Cycles. Its not stickers this year. We also changed to boards. The day permit riders will also get permit boards from now on. People without permits will be asked to exit the trails.

Black trail is amaze. The Full Monty / Super G section was so fast and exciting, huge grin riding that section. Awesome work on that trail - its tough but nicely broken into sections so after a climb you get rewarded with some fast flowing ST.

Unfortunately the permit board system doesn't account for early dawn patrols.

At PPA, we are looking at a one board system to cover a number of trail networks. You buy your annual board online (collection points will either be at the trail head or selected bike shops). The idea is to come up with a tiered system where you buy an annual sticker (an idea) for the whole network or for selected trails only. The board never changes , the stickers change each year. Stickers can be bought at bike shops. Trails that want to be part of this system will have to fulfill certain criteria, a grading system of sorts which determines the amount of funding they get from PPA. This will hopefully ensure a high level of trail quality and riding experience for the permit holder. Trail networks can still sell day permits, but we want to make it easier for riders to ride legally, whenever they like without having to get the trail's "house board" first.

We are in the discussion phase at the moment, but I think it's a good idea and will allow riders to do a lot more online and get organised for a whole year in advance.

PPA will subsidize this project to keep the cost down for the rider and guarantee the income for the trail networks.

Yeah, I was wondering how this would work. We usually drive out early in the morning and arrive before the shop opens, go for a ride, pay and have something to eat when we're done. What do we do now?

I still ride early. Pay when I finish. If they have an issue with that they must open earlier or state that the trails are off limits until 8am or whatever (which would be suicide).

Brilliant idea! Would be more than happy to pay R1000 a year if that were to cover my usual haunts (Welvanpas, Jonkers) and then some of the spots you sometimes venture to (Tygerberg, Grabouw, Hemel & Aarde).

This would help out the lesser frequented trailnetworks, whilst avoiding the rogue headache for the big popular guys.

We would look at a system where the smaller networks receive a proportionately bigger chunk of funding , but they would need to make the effort to improve their networks in return. We won't be including clubs with own networks in the pilot for now. We will begin with "open" trail networks first. Working with Johan Kriegler on this.

Congrats to Welvanpas that made the Top 20 list for best MTB routes in South Africa in the latest Bicycling magazine. They got the 11th position. Next year hopefully Top 10.
