I am sure this would have come up before - however I have not been around as long as some of your Hubbers. I have been using White Lightning (dry) on both my MTB and Road bike and have found it a pretty cleam product to use. I changed over to Weldtite. I can not belive how messy this stuff is. Beside the tatoo on the inside of my calf the chain and components related to the chain are filthy. Its looks as if I have not cleaned my bike for weeks. Is this perhaps a sign of over lubrication or is it just the nature of this prodyct?

leave the weldtite chainsmax alone.  it just isn't worth it.  White lightning still works well.  Pedros ice wax is also good (for me anyway) if you can get it.

My personal feeling on this is that white lightning and similar "wax" type products are well suited to riding on road, but that they don't give your components enough lubrication if you are riding through water and mud.  So if you intend riding the rough stuff, try something like finish line or that weldtite stuff you used (not clued up on weldtite).  However, I tend to apply this carefully and let it soak into the chain, then run the chain through a rag to get the excess off.  That way, my MTB chain stays relatively clean but is still lubricated properly.  If you put on too much and don't wipe it off, it does get very black and makes a real mess.

After reading the reviews on Mtbr.com I got hold of Pro Gold ProLink chain lube.  <?:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />

I have been using it the last 8 weeks on both the MTB and road bike.

I am impressed.  It seems to gather less gunk on the chain, jockey wheels and chain rings.  I used on the Rhodes Challenge, and despite my free wheel hub problems, I had no build up of dust/gunk whatever.  We had no rain, but ample dust, water crossings, etc.

Squirt

I think a lot of dirt riders on the hub used squirt for a long time, me included, but it just does not last long enough on your epic mtb rides of 50 km or longer if there are any water involved.

A quick stop and relube is normally required and it does work very well when it is applied.

I have changed to WhiteLightning epic as it lasts a little longer in the wet.

I must give that progold prolink a chance at some stage.
