Assman you ever heard of "STOMPS" they are a big thing in Chris Carmichel training programs.

On a road bike if you have one? find a average hill about 5 min long with 4 % grad.

set the chain on the Big chain ring in front and about the 13 - 19 at the back, your cadence should be no more than 60RPM - basically grind the pedals keep seated- do this 4-5 x 5min once a week. It will help

It is quite interesting that you say you are cardiovascular fit, but your legs are suffering. Maybe you tend to grind heavy gears. You should rather ride slightly lighter gears and "spin" more. That will take the strain off your legs and use your cardiovascular system more. Remember that your heart muscles are the fittest muscles in your body.

Out of interest how did you reach this conclusion?

My legs get sore and tired quicker than theirs. After a long ride my legs are stiff and sore and theirs are not.

Seeing as you say you are very fit it sounds to me like you're just lacking cycle specific muscular endurance rather thna strength. The only cure for this is to ride more, don't gym, don't run, just ride.

Ride more with them!!!

It is generally agreed among professional coaches, such as Joe Friel, that weight training is not nearly as effective for building cycling strength as cycling itself. You'd be better served by finding a steep hill and riding up and down a few times, than wasting time in the gym.

Assman, got to meerendal, go up godzilla and come down the singletrack, go up again, do that about 4 times twice a week.... As they say use a harder gear each time..

Well, that would make any one cry for his mama...

Thank you for all the advice guys. Much appreciated! I suppose it boils down to i need more time on my iron horse. If i dont have enough time for more riding I will try all the other suggestions.

RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!!!

Seeing as you are neer Hillcrest try the red route on Hillcrest across and down through Kliprug, right at the dam and through Contermans and up the hill to the fence, turn right at the top and you will find a lovely hill waiting for you, once at the top go back down on the single track and climb back out of Kliprug back to Hillcrest.Stunning route with plenty of climbing and fun singletrack downhills and switchbacks. If this route does not help then there is a serious problem.
