I think this is the team they will select

Smith

Petersen

Amla

Kallis

De Villiers (w/k)

Duminy

Elgar

Philander

Morkel

Steyn

Tahir

Personally I would be tempted to bring in De Kock and drop Kallis for this series. He is out of form and it bothers me that now days he only wants to play when he feels like it but is always ready for IPL action.....

Should Elgar / Petersen fail consistantly I would consider guys like Faf and even Imran Khan (what did he do to get dropped??). I would however give Elgar an extended run as he is young and classy, just needs to hit form...

I did and that's why I said Robyn would probably be better suited to Wanderers (although everytime he has bowled lately he has been belted).

Was just saying that if Tahir bowled and held at 4 it would still workout for us as he can absorb many overs.

Tahir can go for 4 as he picks up wickets ..... For Robbie P to go for 4 in tests is a crime. JP can bowl those couple of over to give the 4 main bowlers a break. Faf is also a useful bowler for a couple of overs and JK is a known partnership breaker

Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc open and Siddle and Harris come after unless one is injured. It is also why I put Siddle and Him.

Change bowling is not limited to quicks .... many change bowlers have been medium, off break and all types of different bowling.

Broad bowls change when Finn plays and they opt for 4 quicks

Morkel also opens sometimes but you are considering him a change as I am with others.

We are also talking at who does it well and I am of the belief that there are more bowlers out there than Morkel who are good.

I hear what you are saying,

but Johnson and Starc have barely if ever played together.

Finn also very seldom plays where Morkel hasn't been an opening bowler for a long time.

These things are always largely based on how we feel although the stats show what you are saying to be true with Siddle ect, in bowling it is difficult to be the 3rd best bowler when number 1 and 2 are in your team.

With spinners as a change I don't see it that way,

most spinners do not want the new ball and therefore bowl later by choice as that is when they are at their best.

Mediums are few and far between nowadays and cant really think of any off the top of my head.

When was he ever in the team

Hansie was also reasonably effective as a medium pacer. His economy was just over 2 and with an average of just under 30 he was quite handy.

Yes Ravi is good, forgot about him,

but Umar is a fast/medium unless he has slowed his pace.

Or what's that Natal openers name??? He scored a century on debut and then disappeared (dropped the very next game)

If I had to plan around bowling to the above line-up I would definitely target Elgar as the weak link. As a number 6 batsmen with an average of only 30 you may be tempted to play the extra bowler (Robbie P has an average of about 27 if I remember correctly).

Elgar seems like one of those players that sports a healthy domestic average, but somehow cannot convert that into international runs. There are many like him. Dippenaar, McKensie and Puttick would all probably have made very successful international careers if they played for the like of New Zeeland.

I was only considering current players

Otherwise there is Botham, Imran Khan (the Paki Capt Garf ;)) , Steve Waugh

I agree - McKensie had a good run and lets face it he is married to Candice McGregor so he has enough going for him.

Take away Elgar's 102 no and his avg is 14 over 8 innings. McKensie is still smashing it at domestic level
