Kerry McGregor

He is a lucky guys

Agree with Elgar,

would prefer De Kock there.

Same as ODI,

would love to see Smith in instead of Miller at number 6 (who has done nothing)

I was discussing the test team with my brother last night and we put together the following team based on 4 batsman 4 bowlers and 3 fillers (so to say).

1- Smith (Bat)(CPT)

2 -Peterson (Bat)

3- Amla (Bat)

4 - Kallis (Bat/Bowl)

5 -De Villiers (Bat)

6 -Duminy (Bat/Bowl)

7 -Mclaren (Bowl/Bat)

8 -Steyn (Bowl)

9 -Morkel (Bowl)

10 -Philander (Bowl)

11 -Tahir (Bowl)

I've included Mclaren at number 7 as this adds another pace option and he can play some big shots. If we are in a good position and Mclaren comes in with the intent to play some shots, even if he only lasts a session the idea would be to unsettle Dhoni.

If you look at when Brett Lee smashed that 100 against us, it completely unsettled us and the Australian moral was at an all time high.

However if our top order fail having Mclaren at #7 is not the best idea and then I'd rather have Faf in at #7 as he can save an innings.

I think most people would agree on at least 8/9 of the players - 7th Bat and 4th specialist bowlers being the variables for most

I like Mclaren at #7. It is also a bit of forward thinking for when Kallis calls it a day. It will allow you to play a specialist batsman like De Kock or Du Plessis at #4 (or let de Kock keep, bat 6 and shift De Villiers and Duminy up one each). An extra pace bowler at the Wanderers is almost always a good idea. Besides, Steyn, Morkel and Philander (I'll bat Philander before Morkel, but that's detail) can all hold their own and will be good for 60 to 80 runs between them on most wickets.

That's pretty much the nail on the head right there.

Those few spots are hotly contested at the moment and will always be a bit of a disagreement.

One thing that we armchair selectors will never know is how each player affects moral and I think this is the reasoning for them keeping Faf even though he is underperforming.

Kallis will be in the test arena for at least 2 more years (provided he finds form again) and will start bowling less so that number 7 spot is going to become even more on an issue in my opinion.

I would be pretty miffed if I was QDK and they had Thami in there instead of giving him exposure, if only just the squad.

I don't see the point in bringing in players in their 30's ....especially when there are more talented young players in the country. Thami is at best, the 4th/5th best gloveman/batter in SA

I watched a really good interview with Vinnige Fanie last night and he gave great insight into his feeling tht Brett Shultz was picked ahead of him at a time where his stats were far superior. Obviously he got picked for the Aus tour thereafter and we all know what happened there. He said he was angry as he knew he should have been in the team - my concern (same as Rugby) that we lose these players who aren't get a fair shake ala Pietersen/Trott

I like RM but JK is the test all rounder so it would be very hard to pick both

Thami is in the team for one reason only.

QDK is a better batsman by far and a better keeper but not by much.

For McLaren to take Kallis's position in the team once he goes he will need to be a better batsman as well as a better bowler.

I honestly think that our test team will have a few issues in 3 or 4 years.

Smith/Kallis/Steyn/Morkel will all be on their way out or gone at this stage and unless we get a few guys up and running we will have a big void to fill.

I think SA could pick a 'B' team that would still crack the top 6 test teams

QDK

McKensie

Rudolph

Ingram

Puttick

Rossouw

McClaren

Abbot

Morris

De Lange

Gqamane

and im not that familiar with some of the youngsters coming through

Another ton for QDK. What a pity that a player in such a purple patch is sitting out of the test series. Lets hope he continues to pile on the runs in the Sunfoil Series. At least he'll be facing good quality bowling in the domestic competition.

Since his inclusion of the starting line-up again he has scored 609 runs at an average of 67.7

That is very impressive.

If he manages to score at that rate for his next 4 games he will be the quickest to 1000 runs.

I hope his future is as bright as it seems to be.

Maybe keeping him out of the test team and letting him grow a little more is a good thing.
