Johannesburg - A South African-born policeman known as "Robocop" in the British area he now works in, is in a critical condition in hospital after being hit by a car while cycling, Beeld reported on Tuesday.

Constable Diederik Coetzee, 54, has been known as "Robocop" where he works in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, since 2005 after breaking a British record for the most arrests in a year.

Coetzee, who had also been a policeman in South Africa, was the victim of a hit and run while cycling last Friday.

I remember this guy clearly. I think Carte Blanche or perhaps SKy did a show on him some years back. He used to do his beat on an MTB. The local criminal populace hated him because of the amount of arrests he used to make.

I hope he pulls through.

My mom is from Mansfield, rough place. No doubt this was intentional. Hope they nail the scum who did this.

Spent some time just down the road in Worksop. Dreadful town*.

*Apart from Cumberpark. Rode some nice trails there…

A Nottinghamshire police officer nicknamed Robocop because of his prolific arrest rate is in hospital after being critically injured by a hit-and-run driver while riding his bicycle.

PC Diederik Coetzee, who won a formal citation in 2005 for making 309 arrests in a single year, was in a stable condition in King's Mill Hospital following the collision in Blidworth, near Mansfield.

The South African-born officer was off duty when he was hit from behind on Blidworth Lane on Friday night.

Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Ged Hazelwood said: "Blidworth Lane is a poorly illuminated through-way but the collision happened during rush hour, when many people were headed home from work.

"PC Coetzee was wearing a high-visibility vest and had his bike lights turned on.

"Did you see what happened? Have you seen a grey car with damage to its front-end? Anyone with any information should contact us."

Nottinghamshire Police did not say if they believed the collision was deliberate.

PC Coetzee was a bomb disposal expert and dog handler in Johannesburg before he moved to Britain.

He was formally praised for making the record number of arrests while patrolling Mansfield's Ladywood estate on a mountain bike.

But weeks later he was ordered to stay away from a street near a youth centre amid complaints that people were put off attending as they feared arrest.

Yep, actually my mom's from Warsop just south of Worksop. The whole area is very run down since the coal mining industry went tits up in the 80's.

Surely if you are a good citizen you should have nothing to fear and if you are a thieving little yob then you should be arrested? What a stupid thing to make a copper do!

Ja, I lived in Retford with my folks back in 1985 who then moved to Treswell, they used to go to antique auctions in Worksop. My dad was in mining, hence our arrival in RSA, from Treswell to Evander, some may say out of the frying pan....!!!smile.gif
