I spend 95% of my time on the road, so no. Just throwing out alternatives. Someone who MTBs more than I do may have tried out the maps.

Cool, this was the reason why I didnt go for the 800, like I said it's not any worse than the 500 but on a trail, if you lost on colour or black and white...you are lost. As a road tool I think it would be hard to beat it.

I've just downloaded the Open MTB Maps and played with them in Garmin Basecamp. There do appear to be named, route-able trails for Van Gaalens, including Greek Church, so it may be a viable option. There're also large numbers of unnamed trails.

It's easy enough to download it and check for yourself.

Ta thanks, just downloaded the maps and can see the outline of trails in Garmin TC but battling to select individual ones or their names. Maybe its needs a device that I must import them to

Thats what i like about my iphone, google maps in the satelite view is great for checking for tracks and paths close by, just not great for seeing paths through forests due to tree cover.

I am fast approaching the verge to move from Polar to Garmin, purely because of crappy after sales service from Polar.

My carbon horse deserves a shaxxier device, too, of course.whistling.gif

I use the navigation on the edge500 to ride trails that I am not entirly sure about or thats totally new to me. Just download the GPX or TCX files and convert it to track on your edge 500, The navigation is not as good as on the 800 basically just an arrow that points you in the right direction, but on a MTB on a trail thats all you need.

If you want to nav the trails go evertrail.co.za and search for your fav, download the gpx file and upload to your edge 500/800 as a track.

dudes and dudettes, I also got sucked into the weird and wonderfull mysteries of people not wanting to share their Garmin track files. Kept on getting visions of people clutching their devices and going MAAAAAAY PHHHREESCIOUSSSSSSS.

Then i discovered everytrail.co.za, and low and behold have gotten almost every track file i was looking for and so much more, I now have a damn decent collection of trails around the western cape. And karoo where i do most of my riding.
