Now I realise the terrain will play a major part in this but what sort of average speed (km/h) are you guys riding at off road.

I am specifically interested in the pace of guys riding at Giba Gorge but all offroad MTB speeds will be welcomed but perhaps mention terrain. If you have done Giba and Holla a comparison between the two would be cool (although again I realise it depends which route you did at each).

The reason this is being asked is that someone joked about whether I was walking when seeing my average speed (km/h) for the blue route at Giba. A quick online check of others who had posted their Giba routes showed that my speed was about right (if not compared to Burry and co, or the racing snakes, obviously :) ).

Obviously it does not really concern me what others think about my pace as it is more about enjoyment for me but it would still be nice to see how it compares.

Cheers

Well I did holla maroon today at 14 km/h.... If that helps. I also find that at times it would be faster to walk than ride at my pace at some hills.... Hehe

Never did giba, but if I look at my avg on trails from holla, van gaalens and groenkloof I avg around 16km/h.

Not sure if that will help...

That does help, thanks! Just nice to get an idea from others.

The other day I did the blue route at Giba, lots of climbing, at an average 9.5km/h. Did orange and green today and averaged 10.9km/h so was just interested in how that compares.

I know I don't smoke the downhill sections so this affects my average quite dramatically. Full suspension and big balls would probably up my average a little by keeping those fingers off the brakes on the way down.

No doubt by mentioning our pace we do open ourselves up for ridicule from those who are faster but then they perhaps cannot match us in other disciplines ;)

Riding Tokai Forest, strictly single track up and down, including the odd chat, dressing up in knee & elbowguards, doing some jumps twice and generally just having fun (there is no other way, is there?) will almost always come to 10km/h average. :D

If you want to do it faster, you have to make it up on the CLIMBS! The few seconds/minute or 2 you can score on the downhill will not affect your average much. The 10/20 minutes you can gain on the climbs (by near-killing yourself doing lots of hill repeats and intervals) will make a big difference.

My avg. for Tokai is usually about 18km/h with ups and downs.

But our singletrack flows amazingly, not too much in the technical department so its easy to go fast on the dh's, even on a HT

If you have a GPS device, log your rides on www.strava.com so you'll be able to see how you are doing compared to others riding the same routes.

If certain segments are not marked for measurement, you can add the segment on the website.

Works like a charm

Avg 16.8

Blue route > gravity > grassland > bizhub > shaya-moya > up to gaya and down and through 3 bridges (yes I know! But we do it early.. :D )

Sweet run

EDIT: Or use Google My Tracks. Also gives you point avgs.

Have you got a map of this route, with the names you mention above on it please

Yeah.

On Google My Tracks.

Being somewhat tech challenged however, you will have to tell me how to get it to you!!

I put a screengrab on that Endomondo thread, but that will only help if you have photographic memory.

Not sure either  I was also wanting to know where Blue route > gravity > grassland > bizhub > shaya-moya > up to gaya and down and through 3 bridges are on the map, another riding friend also refers to the same places.

I've more then likely ridden these route, just not sure about the names you are referring to

Blue route start is marked on the map at the trail center. We go up, onto the dirt road left to tar, up the tar to the start of Gravity

'Gravity' is the Gravity Dice route that starts from the tar road and runs all the way down to the Shaya Moya trail. (But you know that!1?) We do half way to the new Bizhub trail through the grassland (on right before the drop-off at the dam) Named now, but I have forgotten. This trail pops out halfway down Gravity. After the culvert jump, straight over the RH berm and left takes you onto the Bizhub trail up to Shaya Moya (The waterfall). Then we go counterflow :o down SM to the river, over, up the two strip tarmac to the dirt road and under the N3 and up to the "hut". This is "Gaya", as in Gaya Sanctuary. Then down and into the top of Three Bridges, counterflow again :o.

All the way to the bottom, back up the road to the 'chain gate' down the two track tar to "The Quarry" trail that runs all the way back down to the bottom and pops out at the Bio-Diesel plant.

Some of these names are our own. We know what we mean.

Don,t do the :o trails after 06h30, otherwise you get to see  approaching you. :D

Ha ha I just transferred my ride from yesterday (for which I'd mentioned an average speed of 10.9km/h) from Endomondo into Strava (based on advice above) and the latter now reflects my average speed as 12.1 km/h!

No wonder you guys all apparently ride faster than me! Your iPhones and Androids probably add a few km/h ;)

Dude. Put a speedo clock thing on your bars. Those phone apps talk ***.

The difference between the two seems to stem from Strava only including "time moving" whereas I have Endomondo include the breaks too. I hear a lot of people use autopause but in my opinion this is cheating because if you are having regular breaks this should be included in your time.

If you are having regular breaks you should be bowling. :D

Got to admire the scenery and take photos to share with those not privileged enough to experience it first hand ;) And wee.....
